Yes, I have seen calcite look like that... I have also seen Gypsum look like that...

How hard is it? Can you scratch it with your fingernail?

Yes, it scratches quite easily, so does that mean calcite or gypsum. I googled calcite but wouldn't have thought to look at gypsum.

Mohs Hardeness Scale

If you can scratch it with your fingernail it is probably Gypsum, if it takes a Penny to scratch it it is probably Calcite.

High spired? I've never seen one fractured like that before, neat.

Oops, I am unclear on this one because of its shape. How do you know it is a snail since it is straight?

Well, I was unsure at first too, (hence the hmm..) but, no chambers. Maybe Kevin can add more,the shape is similiar to these (which are high spired gastropods) but your seeing the outer mold here and in the oddly fractured one you're seeing a cross section, so I think we're looking at the inside??? Kevin?

These are all internal molds of high spired gastropods, the one in post 549 is split right down the middle, very unusual as they mostly fracture at a single whorl.
