OK, it's from almost two years ago, but I would appreciate someone from Scripps to chime in, regarding this impressive find.

 
Onykia? *ears perk up* Looks like it... that size, and with that ridged skin, probably Ok. robusta. Usually occurs in the Northern Pacific... how far south were they?

I couldn't derive from the publication how far South they went. I do, however, have a quarrel with the 2,5 Meter ML assessment as quoted. I'm not saying it would be fundamentally impossible for Onykia to outgrow even Architeuthis, it's just not very likely, and then the head and branchial crown should've been a fair amount larger than the one in the picture for this to seem even plausible. To me, the head doesn't look much larger than, for instance that on the specimen pictured here, with a ML of around 1,8 meters:
