Upcoming Presentations on Cephalopod Research

If you do, Taollan, please post a summary. I have never been to an outside conference on cephs and would be curious about what is discussed.

Not sure whether this is in the intended vein of the thread, but I'll be talking about giant squid on NZ's Radio Live at 12.30pm (local time) this Sunday (5.30pm Saturday in the US Midwest/6.30pm East Coast). Anyone who wants to stream it should be able to here. Probable topics include the Nat Geo documentary Hunt for the Giant Squid and AUT's plastinated GS (currently on display at Auckland Museum as part of the Poisoners Exhibition). I'll also be giving two talks there next week, as part of this lecture series, in case there are any Auckland locals on here -- 11am Wednesday 22nd and 2pm Saturday 25th. Will point people this way for more information on cephs, of course

Sounds cool, will any of the talks be recorded? Since the one on the radio will be streamed online, it would be great to have it stored for anyone who can't hear it live.

Ok, a bit of self-promotion here from me! I have a talk online from an online conference on animal welfare, titled "Nociception, sensitisation and the possibility of pain experience in Molluscs" which covers some of our recent experiments on squid.

The link requires registration and then select 'Archived Presentations" and it's in the list.

I'm also speaking at the East Coast Nerve Net meeting in March, also on nociception in squid. The meeting has a keynote address from Roger Hanlon and other symposia talks also on cephalopods. The link with meeting abstracts is here: http://mars.wne.edu/ecnn/

Good stuff, enjoyed both radio and webinars.

It wouldn't be a bad idea if TONMO hosted its own daily or weekly podcast with all these 'ceph in the news' threads that are posted here. It would be something to look forward to.

Same thing with monthly videocasts- I'd love to see some video from members, and it can be anything- from their pet cephs to their research. It can be a thread dedicated to the videos so people can access them easily, e.g. from how to best acclimatize received animals, to a certain lab's general work.

Will post the titles of the talks mentioned by Robyn, as soon as the program is finalized.

Molluscan Neuroscience in the Genomic Era: From Gastropods to Cephalopods

logo%20only.jpg

The second international Molluscan Neuroscience Meeting, “Molluscan Neuroscience in the Genomic Era: from Gastropods to Cephalopods,” will be held May 16 -19, 2012 at the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, FL.

Recently genomic data from both gastropods and cephalopods have become increasingly available; these data complement results from cellular and behavioral analyses of these two classes of mollusks. One objective of this meeting will be to compare and contrast the different neural and behavioral strategies that have evolved in gastropods and cephalopods. In particular, whereas gastropods possess a modest variety of behaviors that are mediated by simple neural circuits, cephalopods have acquired far richer behavioral repertoires by evolving highly complex central nervous systems. A comparison of the two groups should provide a unique perspective on the evolution of intelligence.

The meeting at the new Rodney B. Fink Education Pavilion at Scripps Florida will begin with registration and a wine and cheese reception on Tuesday, May 15 at 7 PM.

Talks, workshops and poster sessions will take place Thursday May 16 through Saturday May 19.

The meeting will close with a dinner on Saturday evening.

We invite the submission of abstracts on a broad range of research strategies applied to molluscan systems, including molecular, cell biological, electrophysiological, and behavioral studies.

In addition to presenting posters, selected participants will be invited to give platform talks or to participate in workshop discussions.

See Speakers for list of confirmed speakers.

Register at Molluscan Neuroscience 2012. Registration will open April 1.

Registration fees are $250, which include meeting materials, meeting t-shirt, buffet breakfasts and lunches each day, a wine and cheese reception and the closing dinner.

To pay $250 fee for registration, using either Paypal or a credit card, click below-

Note, registration fees may be waived on an individual basis.

Abstracts should be 350 words maximum and are due by April 15. Submit abstracts by email to [email protected]

Support has been requested from several organizations, and we anticipate that funds will be available to defray the cost of attendance for students and postdoctoral fellows, as well as for some senior participants with significant travel expenses. Very affordable meeting accommodations have been made available to attendees on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, which is contiguous with Scripps and the Max Planck Florida Institute. Accommodations are also available in local hotels, including Homewood Suites which has discounted rates for the meeting.

For reservations at Homewood Suites, phone 561-622-7799

and mention the conference discount rate through Scripps.

A copy of meeting announcement is available at: Announcement

Note that there are a large number of recreational options available for spouses and other family members who accompany meeting attendees. Jupiter is located along the scenic coast of Southeast Florida. There are many lovely beaches nearby, and extensive facilities for a wide range of outdoor sports, including snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, fishing, and kayaking. In addition, two unique regions, the Everglades and the Florida Keys can be reached in two to three hours drive from Jupiter.

Molluscan Neuroscience in the Genomic Era: From Gastropods to Cephalopods

Updated 4/15/2012:

"... The abstract deadline for faculty has now been extended till April 20. Because the support from NSF may be particularly critical for some of the students and postdocs who wish to attend, the abstract deadline for students and postdocs is extended until May 1.

Note, that the links for registration, for payment of the registration fee and for submission of abstracts are independent. It is therefore possible to register and submit an abstract while deferring payment of the registration fee.
