Sump

It depends ... as always

We use simple aquariums, don't use a chambered environment and do DIY for hanging a filter sock as the first contact for return water. It is simple, cheap and works well. If we upgrade to a larger tank, usually the original becomes the new sump. If you can find a scratched up acrylic tank cheaply it presents all kinds of easy possibilities but even a glass tank can be easily sectioned with acrylic if you choose to have a more traditional flow pattern. You may want to add a cover to contain splash but ours stays open (allowing for fans to help cool in summer) and the sock set up minimized splash issues.
