Strange Silurian nautiloid

Here's a very strange Silurian cephalopod called Hexameroceras. It's 3 cm long, shows the constricted multi-lobed aperture and comes from the Fiddlers Green Formation (Pridoli), Herkimer County, New York. Interesting, no?

How sweet are the little globular Mandalocerases on pg 272! and nice to see the Gigantoceras catching a trilobite. The shell is complete, but very strongly flattened Kevin. I've seen fully inflated examples of similar things (Gomphoceras) in Late Silurian rocks of the Welsh Borders. Thanks for the link to the colorful reconstruction D.
