Nice that a couple would try to save an octo and then do a little research but they must have missed the part about post brooding/senescent animals being at the end of their natural lives.

Dying in the water still beat being dried out on sand or being picked apart by seabirds.

Unfortunately, birds or fish are the way of it in nature and I am not sure which is worse. Hopefully they don't feel either. Some of the video I have seen of fish attaching senescent octos is mentally painful.
