Hello, my name is Michael. I've been very interested in octopus for many, many years. About 8 months ago, I finally set up a 55 gallon tank for my two spot Caribbean named Penelope. I've had this octopus for about a month now, and it seems to be doing great! I hand feed her one to two snails a day, and she eats like a champ. Even though most of the time she seems more interested in pulling me into the tank..Haha I'll be sure to post many pictures and videos. Nice to meet everybody!

@Michael1717 , With your permission, I would like to move this to the journals forum in hopes we see a lot more of Penelope :biggrin2:. For journaled animals, it is nice to know how they were acquired. This is often helpful for keepers looking for a new animal and also helps to see changes in suppliers.

:biggrin2::biggrin2: Sure, that's fine. I purchased Penelope at a little shop down the street from me in Deerfield beach. It's called "world of tropical fish." I asked them to order me one months ago, and it seemed that nobody had them. I went there one day to get water for my sting ray tank, and they just so happened to have her, so of course I had to scoop her up!

So yesterday when I got home from work, we did our routine hand feeding. Then later on in the night, we started playing with jars. She took right to it without hesitation. Shortly after that,I caught her doing the "walk."

Good catch on the bipedal walk! I have a video of Shelby (and maybe some others) but it does not show clearly that this is bipedal locomotion.

Hello again! Happy new year everybody. I've been changing Penelope diet a little. It was if she wasn't happy about snails anymore, so I decided to feed her some blue crab. She seems to really enjoy them. Although it freaked me out because she is very lethargic after having a meal that big. She hides for a day, maybe day and a half, but after that, she's out and about like normal. It's pretty cool that she's exploring different hiding spots in the tank. It also looks as if once she becomes active again, she is displaying different color patterns.

Instead of giving here a whole crab (which can be really messy in tank) you might try scavenging for just the claws. I do this a my local Asian market when they have live blue crab. (I don't remove the claws from the crabs - they might throw me out - but just pick through the bin for loose claws and then freeze them). You should not freeze whole crab but the claws freeze well and don't get polluted with the internal waste (frozen whole crabs are cooked). One a day is about right and the lethargic time should reduce to just a few hours.

I also fixed the title species. It was correct in the List of Our Octopuses but my brain must have been dozing when I added it to the journal.
