Ommastrephes bartramii, commonly known as the flying squid (and several other names). The common name stems from this behavior


(does no one else think that a squid that can project itself out of the water is not the coolest thing ever!?!)

They can be identified by the long silver band on their ventral side (the side with the funnel :wink: )

The Ommastrephids are a highly abundant family, and comprise over half of the worlds squid fisheries.
