It's not clear that the contaminants are in high concentrations in their environment, just their prey. If the deep water cephs feed on animals that either move in the water column, or animals that eat "marine snow" falling from above or filter feeders on the bottom, and therefore build up this stuff before it gets to that level, it may be more about migration of contaminated animals than about the level where the deepwater cephs actually live.
