GIANT SQUID:
A finfish trawler had an unexpected catch on Saturday, when it pulled in a giant squid. It measured a total of 9 metres in length and will be used for research purposes when the ship, Tsarte, calls into port. The Giasnt Squid was caught to the west of the Jason Islands just on the inside of the FICZ. A Fisheries spokesman says that it probably wasn’t still alive when it was hauled in and thinks it was scooped up off the seabed, having died of natural causes. The last time a Giant Squid was caught in Falklands waters, it was put on display before being sent off to the Natural History Museum. It was sent there aboard the BAS vessel, James Clark Ross. This is the third time a Giant Squid has been caught in our waters. The first was recorded in 2001 and then one was caught earlier this year.
