Jun 8, 2014 at 12:28 PM - tonmo: the chat room will also show activity... like when someome replies to a thread, or posts a new thread
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:00 PM - tonmo: test mini avatar
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:00 PM - tonmo: ...success!
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:01 PM - neurobadger: TONMO has a chat? Finally.
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:01 PM - tonmo:
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:01 PM - neurobadger: oh hey tony!
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:01 PM - tonmo:  Hey nb!
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:02 PM - tonmo: put up the chat room to support the live dissection event on 6/18. We'll keep it up.
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:02 PM - neurobadger: awesome!
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:02 PM - neurobadger: kat bolstad and steve o'shea are doing the dissection, right?
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:04 PM - tonmo: Not steve, to my knowledge... but Kat (@Tintenfisch), Aaron (@GPO87) and Heather (@Heather Braid) are in on it, I think
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:04 PM - neurobadger: i see
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:05 PM - neurobadger: lucky kiwis
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:05 PM - tonmo: :kiwiflag:
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:06 PM - neurobadger: meanwhile i'm job-hunting. ooh fun.
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:06 PM - neurobadger: gotta pay the bills in the meantime between undergrad and grad school
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:07 PM - tonmo: :shamrock_t: :fingerscrossed:
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:07 PM - neurobadger: i am super-grateful to Robyn for hiring me - this publication I got out of doing work with her has gotten me some serious mileage
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:09 PM - tonmo: awesome... Robyn is great! (And indeed she may see this... this is like a shoutbox feature... and messages will be archieved into a thread on a daily basis...)
Jun 8, 2014 at 1:09 PM - neurobadger: cool
Jun 8, 2014 at 2:56 PM - cuttlegirl: woohoo, chat!
Jun 8, 2014 at 2:58 PM - neurobadger: indeed
Jun 8, 2014 at 3:05 PM - tonmo:
Jun 8, 2014 at 10:26 PM - QueenB: Awesome!
Jun 8, 2014 at 10:27 PM - QueenB:

Jun 9, 2014 5:23 AM - Tintenfisch: Woohoo! :squidaut:
Jun 9, 2014 6:46 AM - tonmo: ProTip: to get an email when you're @tagged in a post, opt in here (4th box): http://www.tonmo.com/community/account/contact-details
Jun 9, 2014 6:47 AM - tonmo: ...and note, tagging does not work in chat :rolleyes2:
Jun 9, 2014 11:21 AM - GPO87: Just to clear things up Tonmo, the squid dissection will be run by Kat and Heather, I am in London currently enjoying the amazing array of cephs stored at the National History Museum! I got to see a fabulous Giant Squid of my own, no photos I'm afriad...
Jun 9, 2014 1:44 PM - neurobadger: In non-cephalopod news, a computer has just passed the Turing Test. We're all doomed.
Jun 9, 2014 4:25 PM - DWhatley: Does the live chat have a feature to ONLY show live chat posts? Showing all thread posts is too much info I think and confuses live chats
Jun 9, 2014 4:28 PM - neurobadger: It gets a bit spammy too.
Jun 9, 2014 5:56 PM - tonmo: well... it does. options are, none, new threads only, and new threads and new replies
Jun 9, 2014 5:57 PM - tonmo: archives only capture chats. will reduce to new threads only.
Jun 9, 2014 6:04 PM - tonmo: ok... should only be new threads now. should be a lot less noise; lets see how it goes.
Jun 9, 2014 6:07 PM - tonmo: thanks for the clarification aaron! and yes nb... the turing test. at least octobot is on our side! (i hope)

Jun 10, 2014 12:44 AM - DWhatley: Looking up NB's findings and reading the comments in the Washington Post article, I found this amusing, "30% of people believe Phillies fans are human also."
Jun 10, 2014 12:50 AM - DWhatley: The list is better but I still vote for chat only, we have a "New Posts" list that works well. I don't suppose you can turn on individual threads ? That might work for things like TONMOcon
Jun 10, 2014 7:17 AM - tonmo: ok, it's chat only now. and about your Phillies comment, is that directed at anyone in particular?
Jun 10, 2014 7:06 PM - tonmo: Upcoming TV Chat opportunities:
Jun 10, 2014 7:07 PM - tonmo: Monster Squid: The Giant Is Real A giant squid is observed in its natural habitat. Other Next On: Fri 06/20, 11:00 AM ET SCIHD
Jun 10, 2014 7:08 PM - tonmo: Squid vs. Whale Sperm whales are tracked as they hunt jumbo squid deep beneath the sea. Other Next On: Fri 06/20, 06:00 PM ET WILDH

Jun 11, 2014 7:11 PM - beingevolved: I work for a small, non-profit maritime museum in Massachusetts and the staff absolutely LOVES squid. Would we be allowed to show the broadcast as a free public event?
Jun 11, 2014 7:35 PM - tonmo: yes!
Jun 11, 2014 7:37 PM - tonmo: as far as TONMO is concerned, that is... see the Extra/Extra thread for my response on that!

Jun 12, 2014 12:33 AM - DWhatley: I did not write the Phillies comment, don't shoot the messenger  Chat only is much better.
Jun 12, 2014 8:26 AM - tonmo: i COMPLETELY spaced TONMO's 14th anniversary on May 30. happy anniversary to us!
Jun 12, 2014 9:46 AM - cuttlegirl: Wow, Tony, 14 years! :tentacle:
Jun 12, 2014 11:35 AM - Taollan:   :alarm: :birthday: 14 YEARS!!!
Jun 12, 2014 6:04 PM - tonmo:
Jun 12, 2014 10:06 PM - neurobadger: TOMNO's been around that long?!

Jun 14, 2014 5:41 AM - DWhatley: Actually, that is pretty impressive for the time!
Jun 14, 2014 6:02 AM - tonmo: i wonder if i ever "fixed my netscape problem"
Jun 14, 2014 2:18 PM - neurobadger: t minus four days to giant squid
Jun 14, 2014 2:18 PM - neurobadger: my excitement, it is barely containable
Jun 14, 2014 2:21 PM - neurobadger: saw a picture of the Tentacles gift shop at Monterey Bay Aquarium. Shopping spree?

Jun 16, 2014 12:38 PM - neurobadger: The Smithsonian's Invertebrate House is closing. This is COMPLETELY INEXCUSABLE
Jun 16, 2014 5:25 PM - tonmo: It's a shame. If I'm honest, I am not a big fan of zoos... I feel bad for a lot of the animals. Inverts are among those that I feel have a favorable score when considering "opportunity for the public to learn" and "ability to provide a comfortable environment if done right."
Jun 16, 2014 5:43 PM - neurobadger: Yeah. A lot of vertebrate species give me significant misgivings about zoos, but invertebrate species can really flourish there

Jun 18, 2014 at 7:31 AM - tonmo: TODAY IS THE DAY! Live chat with scientists dissecting giant squid. Details here: Extra! Extra! Live (broadcast) giant squid event coming up on 18 June
Jun 18, 2014 at 12:48 PM - neurobadger: It's squid day!
Jun 18, 2014 at 2:41 PM - Tintenfisch: It is! T -2:40!
Jun 18, 2014 at 2:43 PM - neurobadger: Yeaaaah! This is an Architeuthis, right?
Jun 18, 2014 at 2:45 PM - Tintenfisch: Not one but three! Also a large Taningia danae
Jun 18, 2014 at 2:45 PM - Tintenfisch: Going to set up the table now, will check back in a few mins
Jun 18, 2014 at 2:49 PM - neurobadger: Awesome
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:01 PM - Maritime Gloucester: Tuning in from Gloucester, MA! Our museum cannot wait!
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:03 PM - Tintenfisch: Glad to have you guys with us online!
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:10 PM - neurobadger: I'm missing the Smithsonian right about now. On my birthday in 2011 I got to see their own huge collection of large dead squid.
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:11 PM - neurobadger: I think they've got about 6 or 7 total Architeuthis, a couple of Taningia, 1 or 2 Thysanoteuthis
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:11 PM - neurobadger: I forget what else they have
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:11 PM - neurobadger: Sadly, they have no Mesonychoteuthis
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:11 PM - neurobadger: Although they do have a huge buccal mass from a Mesonychoteuthis
Jun 18, 2014 at 3:19 PM - Maritime Gloucester: Will questions submitted here be answered onscreen, or just as text?
Jun 18, 2014 at 4:23 PM - Tintenfisch: We'll have sessions during the day where we'll respond camera to questions submitted here by text. So, not during every minute of the broadcast, but frequently. And you can ask at any time; we'll just save them up in between live responses
Jun 18, 2014 at 4:23 PM - Tintenfisch: Although others who are online are also welcome to answer!
Jun 18, 2014 at 4:49 PM - neurobadger: It's squid time!
Jun 18, 2014 at 4:50 PM - neurobadger: Is Kat the one with the Outrageous Pink Hair?
Jun 18, 2014 at 4:51 PM - neurobadger: or red or something. It's quite cool.
Jun 18, 2014 at 4:55 PM - neurobadger: look at that brown inky goop at the bottom!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:00 PM - neurobadger: Is that a humongous plastic squid on the blue tarp?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:02 PM - GPO87: It was once a real squid, but has been plastinated.
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:02 PM - neurobadger: cool
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:26 PM - neurobadger: Kat, have you and Dr. Acosta perhaps got any US collaborators with job openings?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:29 PM - main_board: @GPO87: Hi Aaron! It's Jesse. Where you typing from?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:32 PM - GPO87: I'm in scotland! Where are you?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:32 PM - main_board: Sweet! Saw that you paid a visit to the BMNH, very cool
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:32 PM - main_board: i'm at home in london
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:33 PM - DWhatley: I'm am finally here! I had to take Chase out to expend energy and got back a little late
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:33 PM - GPO87: Haha. If only it was London in Europe! We could have had dinner! Yeah, BMNH was really awesome! Can't wait to visit it again! (Lots of Octopo jars)
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:35 PM - main_board: No kidding! I might be back in august to finish up their material. crazy looking at clarke's stuff
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:35 PM - GPO87: Hey D! This is amazing! The specimen is gorgeous!!!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:36 PM - GPO87: I know huh? So much of it! I didn't have enough time to identify the ???? shelves. I only had a day.
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:36 PM - neurobadger: Kind of sad that it decapitated itself in transit

Jun 18, 2014 at 5:38 PM - main_board: love ??? shelves. will be my greatest regret, not always being able to go through all of it
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:38 PM - GPO87: @nerobadger Yeah. But it's such a small connection between the head and mantle, it's not really surprising.
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:38 PM - Maritime Gloucester: What is the estimated lifespan of giant squid?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:38 PM - GPO87: @main_board: I know! Next time your down we can enjoy ourselves and look through some at Te Papa. Get our fix!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:39 PM - main_board: for suer
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:40 PM - GPO87: @Maritime: Y'know, that's a tought one. I've head maybe a few years? But I don't actually know. It seems that they would be growing really fast if that was the case. Anyone else have a better guess?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:44 PM - DWhatley: For @tonmo, Kat is trying to find the statoliths (if the still exist) with a "one cut" attempt
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:44 PM - neurobadger: Because I kind of missed it - the 'cephalon' is the cartilaginously-textured 'skull' of the squid, right?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:44 PM - Maritime Gloucester: How was this squid acquired? Beaching? Bycatch?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:47 PM - DWhatley: She found it (one) for sure second in question but I don't know how, it is tiny, tiny!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:47 PM - GPO87: @neurobadger Yep
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:48 PM - neurobadger: What's it actually made out of ?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:48 PM - main_board: I believe there are different estimates for giant squid life span based on different methods. One study estimated adult size can be reached in 3 yrs (Gauldie, et al., 1994) using statoliths, the structures Kat is extracting now
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:49 PM - neurobadger: I'd be interested to see molecular aging studies on these guys
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:49 PM - DWhatley: Second one found and displayed inside the cut.
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:49 PM - neurobadger: ... if it was feasible
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:50 PM - main_board: I believe statoliths are calcium carbonate structures
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:50 PM - GPO87: Thanks Jesse! That's a much more accurate estimate!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:50 PM - GPO87: And the cephalon is cartilage
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:50 PM - neurobadger: i'm fairly sure statoliths are crystalline, too
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:51 PM - DWhatley: For @tonmo, Kat mentioned that MABRI is testing the one ring a day theory for aging with the deep sea squid
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:51 PM - neurobadger: surely it can't be made out of the same stuff as vertebrate cartilage?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:51 PM - neurobadger: or is this another shocking display of convergence?
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:52 PM - GPO87: I actually think it might be.... but I have no evidence to support that... let me do a reference check.
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:54 PM - neurobadger: I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if it was structurally similar, but chemically it'd have to contain collagen, proteoglycan, and elastin
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:54 PM - GPO87: hmmm. good point...
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:55 PM - main_board: statoliths are aragonite
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:57 PM - GPO87: Ok, night time for me. Enjoy the rest of the show everyone!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:57 PM - GPO87: Talk to ya later jesse!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:58 PM - DWhatley: Looking for spermatophores but not finding any in the first one.
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:58 PM - DWhatley: Beak and radula next
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:59 PM - main_board: See ya Aaron!
Jun 18, 2014 at 5:59 PM - main_board: Have fun over there!
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:02 PM - neurobadger: Some fool harassing me and Tony on twitter saying 'hurr durr CO2 in ocean is harmless cause CO2 in air is!' Clearly did not take chem where you learn CO2 + H2O <-> H2CO3
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:03 PM - chrono_war01: Ask the stupid schmuck what he thinks acid rain is

Jun 18, 2014 at 6:04 PM - neurobadger: I muted him
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:04 PM - neurobadger: although to be fair acid rain can also be h2sO4, but there you've got the contribution from sulfates and SO3
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:06 PM - DWhatley: Surprised that the radula is soft! I expected it to be ridgid.
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:07 PM - neurobadger: They're kind of soft. They feel like a cat's tongue
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:07 PM - chrono_war01: Soft enough to stuff your pillows with
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:09 PM - DWhatley: Three measurements with calipers.
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:10 PM - neurobadger: by the way, yes, I'm live tweeting this thing, sort of
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:10 PM - chrono_war01: 3, because 3 is a good number
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:10 PM - chrono_war01: much better than 2.
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:10 PM - neurobadger: if you wanted four measurements you'd need a stopwatch
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:11 PM - chrono_war01: Might/Will drop by later into the AUT labs to see it all in person today
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:11 PM - chrono_war01: Dropped by to get a good whiff of squid yesterday, twas fun.
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:12 PM - chrono_war01: My god it smelled truly like science in there
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:13 PM - neurobadger: Squid smell can be anywhere. You know what's the most characteristic smell of any place? Drosophila food. Smell it and you know you're in a fly lab
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:14 PM - neurobadger: you can't forget that yeasty smell
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:14 PM - neurobadger: i kind of like it, actually
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:15 PM - chrono_war01: I associate yeasty smells with bread or beer breweries.
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:16 PM - neurobadger: technically fruit flies feed on yeast on fruit, but the yeast that they eat in the lab often grows on things like molasses, which my lab used
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:17 PM - neurobadger: well, the one lab i was in that used flies (i have also been in a ceph lab)
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:30 PM - DWhatley: Severine Dewas (Steve's assistant during the Live Squid expedition, responsible for bringing Steve's bait) has joined Kat for the measuring and will be part of the team setting it up for display in a museum
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:37 PM - chrono_war01: A guy talking about fish on the stream now
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:38 PM - neurobadger: Vertebrates?! Whaaa
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:39 PM - DWhatley: Dr Mathew Jones is talking about deep-sea food webs, displaying a fish with nasty teeth and photophores for counter shading
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:39 PM - neurobadger: But, Denise, vertebrates! :frown:
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:40 PM - chrono_war01: bones!
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:40 PM - chrono_war01: Disgusting!
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:40 PM - DWhatley: Yea, I expected some kind of tie in the squid that did not happen
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:40 PM - chrono_war01: Should I buy an order of squid rings to munch on when I go to AUT?
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:41 PM - neurobadger: vertebrates ruin everything, man. like invertebrate houses and civilization and stuff
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:46 PM - DWhatley: @chrono_war01 It does me no good if you bring them
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:50 PM - Nancy: Hi, Nancy here!
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:51 PM - Nancy: Is there a video part to this chat?
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:51 PM - chrono_war01: Yes
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:51 PM - chrono_war01: http://new.livestream.com/accounts/5183627/events/3069649
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:53 PM - Nancy: Yes, found it, thanks.

Jun 18, 2014 at 6:54 PM - Nancy: Hi,D!
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:55 PM - Nancy: I show 9 people online. - who else is around?
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:55 PM - chrono_war01: I am
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:55 PM - DWhatley: love having two monitors :biggrin2:
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:56 PM - Nancy: Yes, it's hard going between audio and video
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:57 PM - DWhatley: The size difference in the giant and colossal is another unexpected piece of info as well as the flexibility of the beak wings
Jun 18, 2014 at 6:58 PM - Nancy: Appreciate you relaying this information
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:01 PM - DWhatley: First squid was female, second is male
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:02 PM - chrono_war01: Ladies first.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:02 PM - DWhatley: As @Thales might say, squid jizz coming up
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:07 PM - DWhatley: Forgot to note that Kat mentioned that the giant squid is not supposed to have photophores but a previous specimen suggested it might and they will be looking for one in these
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:08 PM - Nancy: That's interesting. The squid does not seem to be all that large
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:09 PM - DWhatley: Eyes: Two eye specialist (missed the names) talking about studying squid eyes and interested in how they grow since human eyes don't
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:09 PM - Nancy: The video and the audio that accompanies it is quite good!
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:11 PM - chrono_war01: Our very own Matt Jones is on it.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:11 PM - chrono_war01: Also the man on the official AUT account
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:12 PM - DWhatley: The optometrist mentioned that eyes are energy expensive so the giant squids' eyes are unusual not only in size but size for energy costs
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:13 PM - neurobadger: human eyes actually grow a little bit from birth to adulthood - the infant eye is 66% of the size of the adult eye
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:13 PM - DWhatley: Oh joy, Kat is going to flip this slippery monster after much attention to laying it out so it does not slip down the drain
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:14 PM - DWhatley: Intelligence: tiny brain for size, most is dedicated to optic processing, not the brightest light in the ceph family
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:15 PM - neurobadger: i think the brightest light in the ceph family is the common cuttlefish
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:15 PM - chrono_war01: @Whatley, perhaps they're good for making sure the squid gets enough food.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:15 PM - neurobadger: although i'd have to find a copy of The Brains and Lives of Cephalopods to get the best idea
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:15 PM - chrono_war01: So it's a fair trade off
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:16 PM - neurobadger: i wish i still had my stack of copies of cephalopod brain dimensions
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:16 PM - neurobadger: also i got tired of live tweeting
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:16 PM - chrono_war01: Cuttlefish are very underestimated. Don't have much science to back myself up but I observed a batch of them from a few days old up to a little over a month old
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:17 PM - chrono_war01: I managed to make them learn how to not do cannabalism
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:17 PM - chrono_war01: Then they learned how to tackle prey via teamwork
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:17 PM - neurobadger: by encephalization quotient i think they've got the largest of the cephs, although they're not so big with the arms
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:17 PM - DWhatley: @neurobadger, I would vote octopus but that is based upon reading, small species of cuttles and personal enjoyment, not scientifically backed
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:17 PM - neurobadger: octopus are after cuttlefish, i think
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:18 PM - chrono_war01: Current official rankings are octo first, then cuttes, then squids with nautalis coming in dead last.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:18 PM - neurobadger: although they have in many ways very different camouflage capabilities
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:18 PM - neurobadger: by what metric, chrono_war01?

Jun 18, 2014 at 7:18 PM - chrono_war01: But I think the gap between octos and cuttles may be much closer than people think.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:19 PM - chrono_war01: Well...it seems to be based on the octo's interaction between itself and humans and its environment
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:19 PM - Tintenfisch: Matt Jones here - Apologies, total brain fade regarding the squid tie-in. Was totally going to talk about that, but went blank.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:22 PM - DWhatley: @matt via Tintenfisch, camera fright? :biggrin2:
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:22 PM - DWhatley: Kat is going to show the brain, cool
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:23 PM - DWhatley: Love the what seems to be is not and Kat giving an explanation of sucker imprints on the eye.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:25 PM - DWhatley: The imprints being artifacts of how it was stored and not from an attack.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:28 PM - Tintenfisch: Matt Jones - guess I'm out of practice.
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:31 PM - DWhatley: @neurobadger, it appears cephalon appears to be support/protection cartilage anywhere on the body
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:43 PM - DWhatley: So the brain tissue looks more like fat than our "wormy" looking brains?
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:44 PM - DWhatley: @tonmo, Kat sliced into the brain to show how the esophagus passes through the middles of the brain
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:47 PM - DWhatley: Head (with arms) of tanlinglia danae now being displayed
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:48 PM - DWhatley: Huge light organ
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:49 PM - DWhatley: Cat light claws grabbed onto Kats gloves
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:51 PM - neurobadger: DWhatley, the only reason our brains look 'wormy' is that they're pretty highly folded
Jun 18, 2014 at 7:56 PM - Maritime Gloucester: Which has a larger eye, a giant or colossal squid?
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:02 PM - main_board: I believe the colossal squid has a larger eye than the giant
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:06 PM - DWhatley: Back to the male giant
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:09 PM - chrono_war01: I'm off to go visit them in person
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:09 PM - chrono_war01: I'll catch you fine people in a moment
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:09 PM - DWhatley: Wave on camera if you can
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:10 PM - chrono_war01: I shall
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:15 PM - DWhatley: Grad student will take samples of the sucker rings to study ocean acidification effects on the squid.
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:19 PM - DWhatley: The rings removed amazingly easily. I wonder if they renew if this happens in the wild
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:21 PM - neurobadger: In life the rings are much more attached.
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:21 PM - neurobadger: It's the same reason the beak is removed easily - the stuff attaching the rings and beak to the soft tissue broke down
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:23 PM - DWhatley: Thanks NB
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:23 PM - DWhatley: My son just brought up supper so I could continue to watch. He made a face and said, YOU can eat and watch that, I can't
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:25 PM - Maritime Gloucester: You guys totally made our day! Thanks for the shout out
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:44 PM - DWhatley: Answer from Kat: both squid and octos have a bucal membrane
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:47 PM - DWhatley: Hardparts: Sucker Rings, Beak, Radula, Gladius, Statolith and islands(?). Statoliths are calcium carbonate, all else are keratin
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:49 PM - Nancy: What is keratin? I have to look that up.
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:49 PM - DWhatley: Locking cartilage of mantle to head appears very weak and is an argument for not being aggressive or rapid moving
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:55 PM - Nancy: Fibrous structural proteins. Found in the human body as well as squids.
Jun 18, 2014 at 8:56 PM - Nancy: At least I can use my iPhone as an occasional second screen.
