Expressions of Interest for the first
CephsInAction Training School “Cephs Biology and Care (CBC2014)

According to the MoU of COST Action FA1301, CephsInAction launches a call for Expressions of Interest for the first
Training School on biology and care of cephalopods, in Fall 2014.
The official language of the Training school is English
The School will run for four days (temptative dates: 13‐16 October 2014; Napoli, Italy).

The Training School has a limited number of places, and funding to support participants. Those interested in attending
should reply to this call as soon as possible (no later than July 20th
, 2014), by sending via email to
[email protected] their expression of interest.

Background
A key objective of the first year of CephsInAction is to deal with best practice in, care and welfare of cephalopods, and
increase the relevant basic biological information.
Scientific research involving live cephalopods is now regulated in all EU states by the introduction and subsequent
transposition into national legislation of Directive 2010/63/EU. This brings live cephalopods with the same legal
“protection” as has been in place for many years for vertebrates. This has consequences for all involved in cephalopod
research, those responsible for the care and welfare of cephalopods in the laboratory and those responsible for managing
and regulation scientific research involving cephalopods.

Goals
The FA1301 Cephs Biology and Care 2014 Training School will cover the practical implications for researchers whose
work must comply with Directive 2010/63/EU.
In addition, the School aims to familiarize EU based researchers, and other potential users, ‐ such as veterinarians,
laboratory animal technologists and regulators ‐ with best practice in cephalopod maintenance, care and welfare
assessment needed for compliance with key aspects of Directive 2010/63/EU, and the underpinning biological information.
Cephalopod welfare is a developing subject, and the School will also serve as a forum for experts and students to advance
cephalopod welfare and management for research and public display, by sharing good‐practice and identifying questions
that need to be addressed by CephsInAction.

Topics to be delivered
- Cephalopods as experimental animals
- Cephalopods and the Directive (e.g. Directive requirements, project application and review, record keeping)
- Cephalopod biology, anatomy and life‐history
- Cephalopod maintenance and handling, environmental enrichment, health and welfare assessment, selected
procedures
- Application of the Three Rs (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement) to cephalopod research.

Who should attend?
Those undertaking scientific research on live cephalopods that might fall within the scope of the Directive 2010/63/EU,
especially early career scientists; those responsible for cephalopod care and welfare; those responsible of project/ethical
review and for the management or regulation of research involving cephalopods.
