All ontogenetic 'changes' are mutations. You think that the loss of two legs would be evolutionarily beneficial?

well. it depends.

if catch skill decreases. then no.
but if being eaten decreases, then maybe yes. less arms means less to grab onto.

most likely it would make sense that 2 arms more would be useful... but is 8 just too many to begin with? like 5 toes, some people say we could eventually lose our pinky toe.

less mass means less energy used to support that mass.

it's a tough call. Most likely 8 would be better. but still it'd be cool if six started to be the norm.

Ceph mentioned that there is a book coming out about octo arm usage (he is one of the authors) and it might hold some clues as to potential for your 6 armed evolution.

The Abdopus complex does and I think it is one of the reasons they are Abdopus and no longer Octopus. One member saw this happen with his aculeatus. The loss is not permenant though.

It could be interesting to see if this is mutation or not :

Is it acting like in the Octopoteuthidae group: With growth tentacles reduces to small appendages ?

After all if the case exists in one decapod group, why not on octopod species ? 6 arms could be enough maybe.

It could be a singular mutation with disavantages ... or a new path ..
