Availability, seller knowledge and the short life of octopuses make it difficult to suggest a "beginner" animal. Virtually all octopuses for the home aquarium are wild caught, most sellers have very little idea of the species that are shipped to them and being, wild caught, the length of their remaining short lives (averaging about a year) is unknown.

That being said, there ARE some recommendations about what not to purchases. Our scientific community agrees that the wonderpus and mimic (often actually a wonderpus when offered for sale) exist in small enough numbers that they should not be collected. TONMO had a long and painful debate about posting open information about exotics and ultimately shielded any discussions from a casual search. If you will log in and then view the Exotics and Rare Species under the main Journals link, you will find many of the discussions on why NOT to buy these rare animals along with information about the other commonly sold and deadly poisonous blue ring.

The articles section will help with general care and requirements. Tank Talk has many ideas for preparing your aquarium, Octpus Care is helpful for feeding and tanke mates (very limited) and our Journals and Photos threads have some nicely journaled history of individual octopuses in captivity.

Hi Sue

getting a bimac in the UK can be quite tricky these days. Most common octo for sale over here are from the Abdopus genus. Best bet is to find a local shop that sells marine fish and ask if they use TMC or have octopuses on their trade lists and order one specially from them. Chances are it will just be called Octopus sp. and wont be specific...

Cheers

Thanks collin i have rung a few marine specialists on of them said tmc have got mimic octopus at £168.00 in stock i will definatly search information on the abdopus genus and see where that search takes me thanks again

Hmm too bad they are still bringing them in, chances are it is actually a wunderpus as they never were too good at telling them apart and that is a pretty sore price for one too. They need a lot of care and attention so steer clear of them.

As for Abdopus, TMC generally call the Bali octopus

cheers
