I've never seen that particular image before either, nor heard of any account that might have gone along with it, and I've been reading about giant squid for almost thirty years now. (Frightening thought, that.) It does have a similar look to some of the illistrations from Victor Hugo's work, and others of his era, but it could just as easily be faked. My guess is some obscure piece of fiction, recent or otherwise, although I could always be wrong.
