Not unlikely, but wouldn't you expect the mantle opening to be less tight and a bit more "flabby"? I wonder whether anyone on earth knows this genus netter than you do, btw...

Not necessarily; the head is usually a bit smaller than the mantle aperture, but not always, especially in submature specimens.

Quite a few people have done very good work on Onykia and seen at least as many specimens as I have (e.g., Young, Vecchione, Tschuchiya, Ku, Okutani)... I wonder what they would say...
