Copper traces in silicone

so, this may seem a stupid question, but i'm gonna ask anyway. the concern with using a second hand tank is that there may be traces of copper in the silicone, right? glass does not absorb copper. so, what if i removed the silicone from a used tank and replaced it with new, copper-free silicone. would that be ok?
