Hi all

I found this cephalopod and was wondering about
how old it is. I am newer to fossil hunting and this
is my first nautiloid.

Any help is appreciated!

Found in IL

Nice fossil. It looks like a Carboniferous (Mississippian or Pennsylvanian) orthocone to me (Euloxoceras has widely spaced septa like your specimen) [just a WAG to start off]. Have a look at this map and see if you can find which age it was found in. Any closer ID would mean cutting the specimen at several angles to see more of the internal features such as the siphuncle (not much left when your done).

And :welcome: to TONMO bluesea

Thanks for welcoming me! I liked the link!
It was found in Galesburg, IL and from the map
I thought it looked like the Permian section but it
said, "no rocks, no fossils." Guess I would be wrong then.
There is the glacial factor here. I find a lot of coral,
some blastoids etc.
