It's not nautiluses, but still awesome! Our facility in Des Moines, Iowa recently brought in some pyjama squid, Sepioloidea lineolata. We have some adults, some eggs, and one week-old hatchling. We are working on new feeding methods, exhibit design, and hoping to continue to culture them here at Central Campus. This, is our "Pyjama Squid Story".

PJ Squid Feeding

Pyjama squid, like many cephalopods, prefer live food throughout their lives. As adults, fortunately, most can be transitioned to frozen food. But that can still be difficult. I challenged my students to create a feeding device that would make feedings quicker, mimic live food, and ensure the health of the squid. In about 2 hours, the students came up with several prototypes and were ready for use. This is one example. Probably the simplest with a small shrimp on the end of a fishing line. The goal from here would be to make something we can place in the tank with many shrimps that is flexible and promotes the feeding behavior of the pyjama squid.
