Can you tell the age of an octopus?

I asked a guy if the octopus where young and he said , "i dont speak octopus, how do you tell"? So i am assuming there is no way of knowing if you are getting an older octopus?

There is little to no way to tell how old they are unless you hatch them yourself. Even size is a poor indicator.
