C. aspilosomatis has long, thin arms that it uses to probe for prey. However, when small, highly mobile prey such as shrimp are flushed, these arms are not very useful for catching such elusive quarry. The octopus switches tactics and casts its web over the prey, trapping it. This is similar to the predatory behavior called "speculative pounce" by Yarnall, but in this species the behavior is directed at visible, fleeing prey.
