Ceratite

A Triassic period ceratite from Timor. The cephalopods recovered from the extinction of the goniatites and developed a remarkably similar group, the ceratites. These coiled, chambered animals had slightly more complex sutures than did the goniatites. This specimen clearly shows the suture structure. The ceratites were the forerunners of the ammonites and the ammonites almost certainly evolved from them. This Ceratite is 30mm in diameter.
