Bacculites grandis

This is a 34" example of a western interior ammonite from South Dakota. (The ammonitella has been reconstructed.) Does anyone know if the slight bend typically found in bacculites is a characteristic of the animal or a product of fossilization?

Thats a great specimen. Not seen many with even a reconstructed ammmonitella, so kudos. I believe from what I see in the treatise on invertebrate paleontology, the curve is real ans not an artefact of preservation.
