Raising cuttlefish in captivity from helpless eggs to full-grown predators can present daunting challenges for an aquarium. In order to ensure they have cuttlefish to exhibit, the Monterey Bay Aquarium's staff takes extra measures and provides these complex cephalopods a helping hand. Using recycled soda bottles, modified cradles, and deep knowledge of each species' husbandry, 95% of the cuttlefish spawned at Monterey Bay Aquarium survive into adulthood.

Squid - Sepioteuthis lessoniana (Big Fin Reef Squid)

Uploaded on Sep 22, 2011
Bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) is probably the best species of squid for display in public aquariums. In 2001, this species suddenly appeared in great numbers around Oahu, Hawaii. Several were collected and brought to the Waikiki Aquarium where they survived to maturity. Their natural life span is one year or less so they grow fast and die. They can be trained to feed on dead fish. Charles Delbeek was the aquarist in charge of this project in 2001.

Octopus - Dofleini and Vulgaris

Octopus Octopus (Narrated by Rod Serling) from the TV series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau (hopefully these will remain on YouTube). The ending copyright shows 1991 but I believe the converted TV program was recorded much earlier. The full story of the octopus study is recorded in a delightful (and, as is the film, still relevant book, Octopus and Squid, The Soft Intelligence (Copyright 1973) It is out of print but readily available in used form). Both the film and the book are still relevant and worth the time to watch and read.

Octo vs. Sargassum! In this video M. defilippi is out and about when a piece of Sargassum (a type of brown alga commonly known as seaweed) floats by and covers up the octopus's hole. Check out how M. defilippi reacts to the Sargassum! Notice the vertical posture M. defilippi does that you may have seen while diving or in other pictures. — at Phil Foster Park at Blue Heron Bridge.
