[Octopus]: Octane - O. Hummelincki (filosus)

I seem to remember either Nesis or the FAO guide describing the eyespot (in Hummelincki or Filosus) but I don't have time to check just now...

Norman's Cephalopods, A World Guide gives a poor description and even poorer photo under filosus and also mentions that they are commonly known as the Caribbean Two-spot. The photo in Norman is from Cephbase:

I also think I found the reference confusing filosus with vulgaris:

OPINION 2147 (Case 3263)

Octopus hummelincki Adam, 1936 (Mollusca, Cephalopoda): specific name conserved

Abstract. The Commission has ruled that the specific name Octopus hummelincki Adam, 1936 is conserved for a common small ocellate octopus from the Caribbean and western Atlantic. The older name O. filosus Howell, 1868 was long regarded as a synonym of O. vulgaris Cuvier, 1797, but more recently has been synonymized with O. hummelincki (rather than O. vulgaris) The name O. filosus has had very little usage and its name has been suppressed.

Nixon and Young say "When alive Amphioctopus (Octopus) hummelincki is rich reddish yellow-brown in colour with yellow mottling. It possesses an ocellus below each eye, between arms II and III, that is purplish blue within an irregular reddish-brown patch."

No pics, though.

I did find a paper with google scholar that said Roger Hanlon had made "personal observations" of the patterns and coloration of hummelincki so he might have unpublished pictures...

Nancy,
I am not sure the direction you are heading/researching but if you need a comparative sample for what you might find (filosus is a better search word than Hummelincki), this shot of Octane shows all of his identification markings fairly well (I use it as wallpaper ;>). I assume you are actually looking for researched text but the pic may be of some help if you find what you are looking for.

As an asside, it appears that Octane's interactive behavior may be very typical of a captive Hummelincki as I found an external blog with similar comments (why the person keeping the octo did not find us is a bit of a mystery).

Octane's Misadventure

I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. I have mentioned that 'Tane does not like it when I clean his tank (for the uninitiated, he pounced on my had briefly several weeks ago). Today I had finished cleaning but was using the siphon to try to pickup some of his sucker shed from the power head (rhyme unintentional) when I heard a plop noise followed by the sound of like something scrambling on paper. It took a second to register that the noise should not be happening and when I looked to my left 'Tane was falling off the counter and on to the floor! Unfortunately, I was still a bit dim witted and did not grab the camera. I did, however, recall that I had made a mental note on how the fish mongers handle octos and quickly (I had to be quick - he was running across the floor!) put my hands around his mantle and filpped him upside down. He inked and then went to bed for a couple of hours. When he came out he came up to me and accepted a pet and a little later caught a crab I offered (he has been ignoring crabs lately so I was glad he had a little change of diet). At his normal supper time he accepted his shrimp and then his after dinner massage. He stayed longer than usual for the massage and was gently touching my little finger for over a minute. When he first came out from his stressed out nap, he avoided the upper sections of the tank and I was hoping this meant he wanted no part of another exit. Unfortunately, later in the evening he seemed to be almost exploring the upper region without quite coming out of the water.

I have gotten somewhat lax about leaving the tank top open while I am working on the tank, coming and going from the room. Part of this is to allow the water to cool a bit but the practice stops today!

In lieu of not being quick enough of thought to take a picture, Neal suggested I shoot and post this, the dark gout is the water trail from the adventure :heee:

Well, maybe NOT seems we have some broken links :banghead:

Then again, maybe I just needed to refresh IE

You're certainly not the first to have this happen. When you're distracted and the tank is open, it's a good time for an escape!

Glad it turned out well and you didn't have to chase him over the whole house

The scary part is I was standing on a stool direcly in front of the tank!

Octane moved much more rapidly than I would have thought possible and I have to admit to a bit of panic on how to go about picking him up. Later I shuddered to think what might have happened if the dogs had been in the room ...

D, when I got home last night Kalypso was climbing around the tank so I unstrapped the screen, reached in and handed her some food. She held onto the food for a second... then she dropped it and jetted up to the top, wrapped around my hand with 4 arms, and began climbing out with the other 4 arms. She got about halfway out before I pushed the screen down over her. I was tempted to just put my hand under her and let her slip over the edge of the top but the dogs were out and Alayna was flipping out. She let go after a couple of minutes but it took some serious coaxing.

... and YOU were going to be freaked out if your octo jumped on your hand :biggrin2:. I just wish I was not so paniced that I would have thought to get a picture! Of course he might have run to Texas if I had insisted on a proper focus. I could not believe how fast he traveled on the tile and how big he looked.

Watching YouTube vids of octo adventures I saw a very sad home recording of a Vulgaris (I think) brought home live for dinner. It crawled out of the sink, out the door and found their backyard plastic pond. I don't want to find out but I wonder if Octane would have found water had I failed to see (hear) him get out of the tank. I was right there IN FRONT of it cleaning his power head and did not see him climb over. I still have terror thinking about how many times I have left the top open and gone back and forth to the garage.
