We are used to seeing photos of blue-ringed octopus displaying their aposomatic coloration - bright blue rings. However, when females guard their brooding cavity they turn off this warning coloration. This female uses her arms to block the entrance and peers out with one eye through a hole created at the base of two arms.Note that the blue rings are greatly reduced. Just the blue eye line is not reduced. The eye line is a species specific marking.
