This is a rare fossil specimen of the vampyromorph Plesioteuthis prisca from the Solnhofen limestone deposits in Germany. This specimen dates from 150 million years ago and dates from the Upper Jurassic period. The phragmocone is visible, though unfortunately the head and arms are missing. The 'squid' measures 18.5 cm long.

This 'squid' is a distant relative of the Vampire Squid though its precise classification is the subject of much debate. Ink sacs are sometimes found in association with some of these Solnhofen teuthids and have even been ground up and used for printing!
