The Portobello Aquarium is receiving the colossal squid model made by discovery channel for animal face off (with the advice of our own :sos:) and now we need a name for it. What do you think? Feel free to post other options!

You really should suggest Messie.... although the name Brian has a certain rugged charm...![]()
Let's be honest, the Daleks have the proper outlook on the future.
I wus getting there!! And I can't use Brian sorry........my office mate might think I mean him instead of a certain other Brian I know!Originally Posted by WhiteKiboko

Messie seems to be the best...if you use the Maori lingo, you'll have a cultural attache over there in minutes.
Actually in NZ we're far more likely to if we don't use Maori!! We actually have a very good relationship with our local Iwi!Originally Posted by cthulhu77

I've always wondered where 'Messie' came from; why wasn't it Meso instead?
I dedicate this Colossal Squid to Neil Diamond

"Maka nui" means big eye in Hawaiian (I know this piece of useful/useless information because I used to work with the Hawaiian Monk Seals at the Waikiki Aquarium and one of the animals was named "Maka nui".
Just interesting that the work "nui" means the same thing in both languages.
Children always come up with the most appropriate names.
I think all the Polynesian languages have the same or similar root (digging back into the dim dark past of Anthro 101 lectures here!) I'm pretty certain words like Marae, Mana etc etc mean much the same from Hawaiian to Maori!
Yeah the kids came up with some great names from Pinky to Tentacool to Karanui!

Some good stuff about islander names in da top book 'kontiki voyage' and other books by the author.
Those dudes in rafts and cannoes got around hey.

Also a few good cuttlefish/octopus/squid encounters.... well a big eye and a cuttle attack but yea, sweet.
