View Full Version : TFH Magazine Ceph Issue
Nancy Apr 10th, 2007, 07:12pm Look forward to the June issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist (TFH), which should reach the sellers by around April 22. Not only does this issue feature cephalopods (a first), but it’s also heavy on TONMO.com member participation. It’s an issue I’d think most of us would want to have.
The following members have articles in the magazine: Colin (cuttlefish), cuttlegirl (cuttlefish), corw314 (octopuses), zyan silver (octopuses), marinebio_guy and Greg Barord (nautilus) and myself (octopuses). Even more of our members are represented in the photos. I wish I could tell you exactly whose photos will appear but we submitted more photos than required and TFH made their own selection – we won’t know until we see the issue. We do know that one of joefish84’s octopus photos is featured on the cover.
You can buy this issue at most Barnes and Noble, Petsmart stores, and LFSs. TFH has also made a special arrangement for us to purchase issues from them. Call TFH at 732-897-6824 and ask for Elaine. Let her know you are a TONMO.com member and TFH will sell you the June issue for the cover price plus shipping. You’ll need to prepay the order, as this is not something they normally do. All article authors will receive several copies, but I haven’t been able to find out about photographers yet.
How did this all happen? We owe it all to Carol (corw314), who began working at TFH and got to know people associated with the magazine. It was a big effort to coordinate submissions by so many people, both articles and photos, but the results promise to be worth it. We anticipate some mention of TONMO.com and Tonmocom in the issue, so we may get some new members out of this effort, too.

corw314 Apr 14th, 2007, 04:27pm FYI - I had 2 stores tell me the 15th which since it falls on a Sunday, Monday...... and one source was from a LFS that has ties to TFH......
erich orser Apr 15th, 2007, 01:38am Barnes and Noble has a date of 4-24 as the pull date of the March 27th issue, so expect it on the shelves by the 25th from that particular retail behemoth.
zoose Apr 19th, 2007, 10:47pm The issue is out in PetSmart stores! I havent seen TFH devote this many pages to anything before! Great job guys! This is outstanding!!! Out of all of the stacks of TFH I have laying around, this is my favorite issue!!
If you don't see it on shelves, ask a manager if they have fresh box of TFH laying around that has not been put on the shelves yet.
Sean
Nancy Apr 20th, 2007, 12:09am Well, congratulations, you're the first person to see this issue! Thanks for reporting on it.
The TFH people had seen the proofs and said it was spectacular - can't wait to get my hands on one!!!

Colin Apr 21st, 2007, 02:45am Great - look forward to seeing it!!!
People in the UK - you can buy it from large newsagents like WH Smith or Borders. Some pet shops will carry it too.
monty Apr 21st, 2007, 02:49am my local Border's doesn't have it yet... :boohoo:
Nancy Apr 21st, 2007, 01:25pm I called Petsmart and the woman who worked there said she was holding the June issue in her hands. Just to be sure, I asked her what was on the cover. She said "a cobra.....a snake....something very strange". I asked whether it could possibly be an octopus, and with some relief, she said "yes".
Nancy
sorseress Apr 21st, 2007, 03:50pm A Cobra??!?? Good grief! :banghead:
cthulhu77 Apr 21st, 2007, 07:11pm "At Petsmart, we hire professional staff who are as interested in animals as you are"
I love those Eight bodied cobras that live in the ocean and stuff. They, like, are so totally rad.
shipposhack Apr 22nd, 2007, 01:44am My Barnes and Noble had the May issue :\. And from the short time I looked (closed 5 minutes after I got there), no ceph books either :'(
Also lol cthulhu
Michael Blue Apr 22nd, 2007, 04:17am I went to a SuperPets (who interestingly still had 1 week old dead starfishes in their now algea-overgrown marine tanks as well as seahorses) and they had nothing. Borders had nothing.
PetSmart (who apparently don't carry marine fish or supplies anymore?) had the May issue.
...The search continues...
corw314 Apr 22nd, 2007, 07:41am Did you try any book stores? Barnes and Nobles? Maybe Petco?
Michael Blue Apr 22nd, 2007, 11:25am Yeah Borders is a book store, similar to B&N.
I think we have a petCo somewhere, but honestly I've usually stuck to my local specialty shop and stayed away from the big boys...
Thales Apr 22nd, 2007, 12:03pm IIUC, the issue doesn't officially come out till the 22nd - which means tomorrow. Mags often pre release to certain stores. I have a subscription to TFH and I haven't gotten it yet.
Michael Blue Apr 22nd, 2007, 12:18pm The 22nd is today.
Thales Apr 22nd, 2007, 02:22pm I know! But there is no post on the holy day of the week!
Michael Blue Apr 23rd, 2007, 02:58pm Ah, gotcha.
Architeuthoceras Apr 23rd, 2007, 04:16pm Congratulations and a well done to Nancy, Zyan, Carol (corw314), Adam (marinebio_guy) and Gregory, Colin, and Jennifer (Cuttlegirl), you actually got me into an LFS today (didnt buy anything but a magazine though). Great job on all the articles and photos.
:notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth: :notworth:
erich orser Apr 23rd, 2007, 07:45pm Our newsstand manager is pulling multiple coupies for me when it arrives. Hope it's today!
Architeuthoceras Apr 23rd, 2007, 09:26pm I just noticed that Neale Monks has his photo in with all the other contributors of this issue, unfortunately his article is on some kind of rainbow fish and not ammonites.
Animal Mother Apr 23rd, 2007, 10:37pm I went to the closest PetSmart on Saturday and the magazine rack where the TFH price tag was empty much to my dismay.
So, I was wondering, anyone who has a copy see a picture of Einy?
Nancy Apr 23rd, 2007, 11:57pm Yes, there is a picture of Einey!! TFH wrote their own captions, so it doesn't mention his name, just calls little Einey Octopus mercatoris.
I had to call all around and finally found only one Petsmart with the June issue. I think the others will have it soon.
Nancy
Animal Mother Apr 25th, 2007, 03:39pm Awesome! Alayna procrastinated getting the contract sent back so I was wondering if she got it back in time. Thanks!
shipposhack Apr 29th, 2007, 01:28am I got mine today! I was very happy to get it. I especially enjoyed learning about the Nautilus, whenever I looked before I could never find anything. I'm suprised at how small a tank they need, I thought they needed a massive one. Other articles great too, but I did wish the whole issue was ceph articles.
erich orser Apr 29th, 2007, 04:19am STILL no luck - we still have the May issue!:banghead:
Argh!
Thales Apr 29th, 2007, 12:39pm I am more than a little peeved that I got a subscription to TFH and I still haven't received the issue.
Nancy Apr 29th, 2007, 02:03pm I don't know that anyone with a subscription has a copy yet.
Right now, only a few stores have them in - this is the June issue, and we're still in April, so I guess that's why no one is in a hurry.
Many stores may have them sitting in the back and haven't changed out the May issue for June yet. One Barnes and Noble employee seemed to think the June issue would be on the self next week.
And just fyi for everyone, this is a big magazine with over 150 pages and many other articles, columns and featues. The ceph part begins on page 106, with my articles. Here are the artilces and authors, in order:
So You Want to Keep an Octopus
Nancy King (Nancy)
An Octopus Success
Zyan Silver (zyan silver)
Octopuses I have Known
Carol Sauer (corw314)
Aqarium Science: Husbandry of the Nautilus: Aspects of its Biolgy, Behaviour and Care
Adam Daw (marinebio_guy) and Gregory Jeff Barord
Cuttlefish Husbandry
Colin Dunlop (Colin)
Raising Sepia Bandensis from Hatchling
to Breeding Adult
Jennifer Saitz (cuttlegirl)
The cover is a photograph of an O. bimaculoides by Joe Strickland (joefish84) and there is s full page reproduction of this photo for framing inside the magazine! We think this is a photo of Kashmir.
We also have additional photos from other Tonmo members. We submitted more photos than TFH had room for, so thanks also to those Tonmo members who took the time to help with this project.
Nancy
monty Apr 29th, 2007, 02:20pm  to all the authors, photographers, and other contributors!
