Here (http://ivl.imnh.isu.edu/SpecimenLibrary/java_applets/ammonite.html) is a virtual ammonite, with a few more virtual fossils on the home page (I really think they could of got a better specimen to virtuallize :hmm: ).

Neat find.
Part of the problem with the detail is that the 3D model is pretty low resolution to allow it to interact quickly with a viewer's mouse and not use up too much bandwidth.

The author gave a presentation at this months UFOP meeting, he has the entire skeleton of Triceratops digitized, he did it while they were restoring the mount at the Smithsonian in washington DC. It has alot more detail, very cool 8-)

That's incredible, even if it is low res 3d shape. All the main info is preserved. If only this were a faster process. It doesn't say how long it takes, does it? Much better than photographic records alone, since those tend to leave out views from underneath or behind, (like the underside of a vertebrate's cranium). Hard to make comparisons then to a fragment from below or behind. I wonder if that's affordable for most university departments.

Why did I have to be born in the late '60s?
Oh, to be 20 yeras younger.
Small question: are there any more specimens available?

Now that is an ammonite worth virtualizing 8-)
