I am a rookie with saltwater tanks and I could use some advice. I was wondering how long I needed to keep my lights (PC- 50/50 and actinic) per day to keep my live rock alive (and somewhat colorful). I have a nocturnal octo (O. mercatoris) and I want him to be as happy as possible. I would like to find a minimum time I need my light on.

Thanks,
Garrett

I wouldn't worry too much about the rock. As long as it gets some light every day I don't think it matters whether it gets 8 hours or 14 hours.

If you're worried about too much light keeping the octos inside you might consider ditching the PCs and just using a run-of-the-mill flourescent light hood.

I use one fluorescent bulb and my coralline algae grows quite well.
