I still don't know what Cthulhu is...

Cthulhu is a fictional mythical alien/god/being thing that is kinda cephalopod-ish in the horror stories of H.P. Lovecraft.

The complete works of H.P. Lovecraft are available here:
http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/

"The Call of Cthulhu" is the particular story that made Cthulhu famous, but it's not my favorite of Lovecraft's stuff. "The Haunter of the Dark" is one of my favorites, and might be a better choice to get a feel for whether you like Lovecraft's style, but I know others have different favorites-- there's a thread of "what's your favorite Lovecraft story" around somewhere.

Alternatively, you could read Wikipedia's Cthulhu entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu).

Are you implying that I should be any less afraid if it's not fictional?

Appropriate to the season, this discussion reminds me of the following, from It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown:

Linus: Hey, aren't you going to stay to greet the Great Pumpkin? It won't be long now. If the Great Pumpkin comes, I'll still put in a good word for you.

Linus: Good grief! I said "if"! I meant "when" he comes!

Linus: I'm doomed. One little slip like that could cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by.

I find this one particularly great because of the "kids first" title underneath...
