Hello, I was wondering if filters can just be mounted right on the side of a tank as long as there octo-proofed (putting a material such as a sponge over the intakes).

I was thinking of having a 50g with that kind of setup since sumps seem troublesome in my view.

you can find block sponges at some lfs's those should be fine
