You've all heard the game "6 Degrees to Kevin Bacon", yeah? Basically, you name an actor, and see if the other guy/gal can string along relationships with other actors that have appeared in the same movie, and make it lead to Kevin Bacon in six degrees or less. Ug, it's best explained by example:

Ok, lessee... Burt Reynolds

ok...

1. Burt was in Striptease with Demi Moore
2. Demi Moore was in Destination Anywhere with Kevin Bacon!

Boy, uh, that was easy. But, unlike I just did, you cannot use a search engine to get your answers. You must use your knowledge of film to get there.

So, let's give this a spin... see what we can do. In 6 degrees or less, can you link any actor to a movie containing a cephalopod or a reference to a cephalopod? I'll give a random try, let's see what you can do:

Meg Ryan!

i thought it was seven degrees.....but ill give it a shot....

meg ryan - tom cruise - top gun
tom cruise - robert duvall - days of thunder
robert duvall - michael douglas - falling down
michael douglas - kirk douglas - *
kirk douglas - 20k Leagues

* dont remember the name of the movie but i was recent or semi recent but i know it had the word family in the title.... does that still count?

Hugh Jackman starred in "X-2" with Brian Cox

Sweet! WK with the first response by a nose! But Clem did it in less steps... Well done!

WK, maybe it is 7 degrees... I may have got it mixed up with the old community site sixdegrees.com. :?

Next... Gene Wilder!

WhiteKiboko
Jun 20th, 2003, 09:12pm
ummm this is kida weak, but its a try....

gene wilder - slim pickens - blazing saddles
slim pickens - 1941

in 1941 he gets dragged aboard a submarine, and submariners have been called 'squidies' before, although i dont believe the any cephs were directly mentioned

:(

tonmo
Jun 20th, 2003, 09:17pm
 A truly valiant effort, but as the person who threw out the actor name, I guess I am judge, and I'd have to say that unless they were called squiddies in the movie 1941, or they saw or referenced a ceph of some sort, then I'm not getting the connection.

That said, it's far better than I can do... I got nuthin.

WhiteKiboko
Jun 20th, 2003, 09:27pm
ive got it! i knew slim pickens wouldnt let me down....

gene wilder - slim pickens - blazing saddles
slim pickens - james earl jones - dr strangelove
james earl jones - star wars or return of the jedi

either the trash monster or the sarlacc respectively

oh, I'll try my own, but this is a real butcher's job:

1. Gene was in Young Frankenstein with Teri Garr
2. Teri was in Tootsie with Bill Murray
3. Bill Murray was in Stripes with John Candy
4. John Candy was in The Great Outdoors with Dan Akyroyd (sp?)
5. Dan Akyroyd was in Trading Places with Jamie Lee Curtis
6. Jamie Lee Curtis was in a Fish Called Wanda, which featured an octopus logo on the door of John Cleese's office at the beginning of the movie, for his company, Octopus, Inc.

...I think...

tis a shame.... so good connections with him..... among his credits are spies like us, bill and teds excellent adventure, brian's song, cleopatra jones, revenge of the nerds, another 48hrs, i'm gonna get you sucka, and a few others..... he's a great person to use since hes never in a starring role but still recognizable (kinda like gary busey)

the two most direct paths would be: 1) to keanu reeves (bill and teds) in which he was the history teacher, which of course goes to the matrix movies or 2) to shelley winters (cleopatra jones) and shelley was in Tentacles....

however, with all the things hes been in, roundabout paths are also possible

maybe ill leave the actor selection to Tony :)

OK, wiseguys, here's one with a twist:

- Bela Lugosi wrestled a rubber Octopus in Edward D. Wood's BRIDE OF THE MONSTER
- Johnny Depp played the title role in ED WOOD
- Johnny Depp appeared in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS with (briefly) Vincent Price
- Vincent Price was in TOWER OF LONDON with Boris Karloff

Here's a non-Douglas solution to the Sutherland problem:

Donald Sutherland starred in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with Leonard Nimoy
Nimoy starred in "Star Trek" with George Takei
Takei appeared in "The Green Berets" with John Wayne
Wayne got killed by a squid in "Reap the Wild Wind"

Taningia, the elliptical structure of your sequence is quite lovely.

The first version of the Time Machine had interesting Morlocks.
The Morlocks also appeared in the X-Men comic.

Eddie Murphy? Piece of cake! Thusly:

- Eddie Murphy starred in COMING TO AMERICA.
- "Coming to America" was a hit song from the 2nd remake of THE JAZZ SINGER.
- The 2nd remake of THE JAZZ SINGER starred Neil Diamond.
- Neil Diamond is Steve-O's hero.
- Steve-O' once said he would rather shake Neil Diamond's hand than even to find a living adult Architeuthis. (Don't believe me? He actually put that in writing on the old Message Board -- Tony, can you back me up on this?)

Sorry, was not able to find that specific claim, but here is a related conversation... I'm afraid it may be more incriminating for you, though, given your Longfellow Serenade stinker! :tomato:

Neil Diamond|steve_oshea|
....ain't he just marvelous! I've 38 albums, but only, unfortunately, seen him live twice.

What's you're favourite track?
Mine's "I am, I said"

Favourite movie, "The Jazz Singer".

Long may he live, and happy may he be .... and one day may he soundtrack a squid movie.

Re: Neil Diamond|steve_oshea|
.....and Tani, perhaps you can inform us a little more about Richard Bach. I have a sneaking suspicion that you'll know.

Who came first, Bach or Diamond?

Re: Neil Diamond|TaningiaDanae
Hmmmm, lessee now....I read JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL about a gazillion years ago, but I think Neil was around even before that. And he did do a squid song -- wasn't "Longfellow Serenade" about an Archi? (Sorry, couldn't resist that one 8))

On the other hand, you Kiwis gave us the better part of the deal with Split Enz. Whatever happened to them, anyway? I used to have several of their vinyl albums, from "Mental Notes" through "Waiata", but stupidly got rid of them when everything went CD. Now the only Split Enz CDs I can find are abridged versions with many of the songs I loved left out. (BTW, I did see them live at a club here in Noo Yawk -- I think it was late '70s or early '80s -- and they were fantastic!)

Now what in the deep blue heck, you might ask, has Split Enz got to do with squid? Well, for one thing, their lead vocalist was a bloke named Tim Finn....

Re: Neil Diamond|sushigirl|
Master Neil was the first concert I ever went to...age 13. It's not the BEST concert I ever went to (Harry Connick Jr. wins that honor), but it was definitely the second best! The man is awesome!

Re: Neil Diamond|melbe|
Addict O,
I bet you could meet the big D. Really. You are a famous scientist, with your own clipart! He is a famous artists, great publicity for him. I can see it now the paper reads, "Neil Goes Squiddy, O'Shea passes out!" Good luck with that.

 Actually, that may be even more incriminating for SushiGirl, who openly admitted to seeing him in concert and being impressed by his performance!

BTW, Solid Gold Oldies -- one of the "music only" cable stations we get here -- often plays Neil Diamond songs. From the the Artist Trivia captions that accompanied them, I learned that ND was a pre-med student who got into NYU on a Fencing Scholarship. It took me several minutes to get past the image of one of the city's finest colleges giving out scholarships for selling stolen goods....

TaningiaDanae
Jul 12th, 2003, 01:09pm
Hmmmm -- good try, WK, though a bit of a stretch. Here's what I had in mind:

-- JFK had "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" sung to him (among other things 8) ) by Marilyn Monroe

-- Marilyn Monroe starred in SOME LIKE IT HOT (that's the "drag connection") with Tony Curtis

-- Tony Curtis was in SPARTACUS with Kirk Douglas

-- Kirk Douglas was in 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA with the in/famous Giant Squid
J. Edgar Hoover was a good suggestion for the "drag" part, though I don't know how it could carry over from there to a Ceph.

As for Barbra Streisand:

-- Barbra did "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" as a duet with Neil Diamond

-- Neil Diamond is Steve-O's hero (duh!)

-- the rest is self-evident
What'd I tell you? Piece of challah!

Aw, gee, I'm not that much of a meanie, Big Guy. I just added the "film" specification as a clue for that particular challenge. Marriage, affairs (e.g., Marilyn & JFK), family ties, song duets, etc. are always acceptable.

woody allen - alan alda - crimes and misdemeanors
alda - rip torn - canadian bacon
torn in MIB

Fantastic answer -- two bonus buckets of krill to WK! I never saw CANADIAN BACON except for a few short excerpts, but I probably oughta rent it because anything with Rhea Perlman and the late John Candy has gotta be my kind of flick. (Ever see the TV comedy sketch series SECOND CITY with Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin, and others too humorous to mention? A classic!)

Here was my solution to the Woody Allen one:

-- Woody was in CASINO ROYALE (the James Bond film that all James Bond fans hate) with Peter Sellers

-- Peter Sellers was in LOLITA with James Mason

-- James Mason was in 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, etc.
BTW, interesting trivia, Woody Allen attended my alma mater Midwood High School (several years before me) when his name was still Stuart Allen Konigsberg, and when I went there they had a photo of him on a "Famous Alumni" board in the main lobby.

I often wonder if that photo is still up there, or if they took it down when it occurred to them that the coeds would probably be just about the right age for him to date....

i dont know what else is out there because thats the only woody allen movie ive seen.... although 'hercules in New york' has a very wood allenish character....

Only one Woody Allen film? Boy, do I feel old! Back in the Jurassic period, I used to see his flicks all the time. Well, the early ones anyway, before he decided to be deep. BANANAS, TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN, LOVE & DEATH, SLEEPER, ANNIE HALL, BROADWAY DANNY ROSE, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, ZELIG, EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX, and even the animated ANTZ, are all classics. However, avoid like the plague any of the films from his "Ingmar Bergman" period -- pretentious crap-ola, IMHO.

Woody also wrote some very funny essays, collected in the books WITHOUT FEATHERS and GETTING EVEN.

At this point, I should add that I cannot stand the man as a person, though I am awed by his intellect and numerous talents (comedy writing, scriptwriting, acting, directing, clarinet playing, and familiarity with fine literature, psychology, and a host of other academic subjects). It's similar to the Peter Sellers thing (though, unlike Sellers, I would not consider Allen a Hottie in any way, shape, or form). I wouldn't let Woody Allen within a mile of my teenage daughter, if I had one. But since I don't, I can appreciate Allen's creative work independently of Allen himself.

(Pardon the rant, but he really, really gets on my nerves as a human being.)

maybe we should drop the less than 6/7 steps specifications.... part of the fun is seeing what paths people take... plus itd give other people a chance to jump in....

Sure, sounds like fun! No holds barred from now on, no matter how convoluted the connections. It might even be fun to suggest connections to which we don't know the answers ourselves, and as you say, see what variations everyone comes up with.

C'mon everyone, don't be shy -- the weirder the better.

I never saw BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, but from what I've heard it contains numerous fabrications and inaccuracies.

speaking of sctv, i have a copy of strange brew..... its good eh?

Believe it or not, I've never seen STRANGE BREW, though I really ought to because I used to love the "Great White North" sketches on SCTV, eh? However, I did see THE LAST POLKA starring "The Schmenges" (a takeoff on THE LAST WALTZ, a tribute to The Band). Funny as hell, along the lines of SPINAL TAP.

BTW, more trivia: Did you know that Weird Al Yankovic is the son of Frankie "The Polka King" Yankovic, and when Weird Al was Little Weird Al he used to play accordion with his dad's orchestra? This makes perfect sense because there's a very fine line between polka lyrics and novelty song lyrics, e.g., "I don't want her, you can have her, she's too fat for me" and "Throw her out the window, let's all watch her bounce". (This also illustrates a definite misogynistic tendency in polka music, which I may cover in a later treatise entitled "Sociology of Gender and Obesity Issues in 20th Century Polish-American Culture".) :P

Here's a challenge for anyone who wants to give it a try, no limit to the number of degrees:

Jerry Seinfeld

(I confess, I do have a particular sequence in mind, but all solutions offered will be equally acceptable -- with the possible exception of "Jerry Seinfeld has never been in my kitchen," etc....)

PS: Happy Bastille Day! I hope that today everyone here is having at least one order of Freedom Fries, taking their clothes to the Freedom Cleaners, or giving their sweetie a Freedom Kiss, in honor of the occasion.

:roflmao: Where on earth did you find that? Hysterical! I think one of the "reviewers" says it all:

This piece of surrealism would almost certainly be useful in your neighbohood torture chamber. I know I'd confess to the kennedy asassination if I had to listen to any more of it! (10-12-2002)

Speaking of Weird Al, I remember seeing UHF, and he and Michael Richards being in it, but I don't remember who McCarthy was -- I saw the film ages ago.

Sure, looking back in this thread is cool. Let's face it, there hasn't been an infinite number of Cephs in the arts and the media throughout history. (That's why non-fictional sources such as Steve-O', Clyde, Kat, Richard Ellis, and Jacques Cousteau must also be considered acceptable.)

Here's my take on the Seinfeld connection:

-- In an episode of SEINFELD, Jerry's "personality clone" was played by Janeane Garofalo

-- Janeane Garofalo was in MYSTERY MEN with Paul Reubens

-- Paul Reubens was in BLOW with Johnny Depp

-- Johnny Depp was in ED WOOD with Martin Landau

-- Martin Landau played Bela Lugosi in ED WOOD

-- The real Bela Lugosi wrestled a real fake Octopus in a film directed by the real Ed Wood
Of course, if I were really being creative, I could have jumped directly from Degree #2 to:

-- There used to be lots of bad Paul Reubens jokes circulating on the net

-- There still are lots of bad Ceph jokes circulating on TONMO
....but I shall refrain from doing so out of respect for Paul Reubens

I did a superficial search for Kevin McCarthy, but couldn't find anything -- maybe next time I'll try Google which is much more comprehensive. I've got a feeling he's one of those character actors whom everyone knows by sight, but few people know by name.

Yeah, the song really isn't that awful, as awful songs go. Of course, getting Yours Truly on the subject of awful songs is a dangerous game, as my Cliff Clavinishness positively blossoms when the topic is brought up. As I write this, the Solid Gold Oldies station on our cable is playing Tom Jones' "Delilah", one of my favorite awful songs. (The melody isn't bad, but the lyrics.... "So before they come to break down the door / Forgive me, Delilah, I just couldn't take any more." Classic! :P )

IMHO, awful songs fall into two distinct categories: Intentionally Awful Songs, a.k.a. Novelty Songs (e.g., "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa", "Monster Mash", "Gimme Dat Ding", "Witch Doctor", etc.), and Unintentionally Awful Songs ("Delilah", "Leader of the Pack", "Honey I Miss You", "They Needed a Songbird in Heaven, So God Took Caruso Away", etc.). Composers of Intentionally Awful (Novelty) Songs are admirable as it takes a lot of creativity to come up with clever/funny lyrics that are also singable. However, composers of Unintentionally Awful Songs are even more admirable because they (presumably) knew the risk of writing lyrics that had the potential of not being taken seriously, but they went ahead and took the risk anyway. (If on the other hand they were certain that said lyrics would be taken seriously, they were complete idiots -- but I give them more credit than that....)

See what happens when you get me started on Awful Songs? Anybody willing to discuss this topic further should start a new thread, as it may go on forever.... Cthulhu help us!

Fascinating article! In fact, I've noticed this "six degrees" effect in my own life long before there was such a thing as the internet. Back in college, I used to marvel at how everyone I knew seemed to know everyone else I knew, entirely independent of me. (That's an awkward way of putting it, but back then we didn't have the expression "six degrees of separation".)

For me, this has even included some non-unknown people.... which I guess is bound to happen when one is as ancient as yours truly :D In the course of my life -- assuming "1 degree" is friendship with the person and "2 degrees" is friendship with a friend of the person, I've been:

-- 2 degrees from H.P. Lovecraft (via two different individuals, independently of each other!)

-- 2 degrees from Ayn Rand

-- 2 degrees from the Dalai Lama

-- 2 degrees from Native American actor Wes Studi (LAST OF THE MOHICANS, DEEP RISING, MYSTERY MEN, etc.)

-- 2 degrees from the NY Mets

-- 1 degree from Tiny Tim
Of course, when the net is taken into consideration, it becomes more and more possible for "just folks" like us TONMOers to correspond directly with scientific celebs like Steve-O', Richard Ellis, and Clyde Roper.

Years ago, priest / philosopher / scientist / writer Pierre Teilhard de Chardin proposed a concept called the "noosphere" (pronounced "no-oh-sphere"), which in effect would be the spiritual-mental equivalent of the atmosphere, surrounding and connecting all minds on earth into one great mind spanning the globe. Many people believe that the internet has realized this concept in an unexpected but very plausible way, uniting kindred spirits from all nations who would otherwise never have met.

The negative side of this, of course, is the proliferation of ridiculous rumors, urban legends presented as truth, and out-and-out lies, far more efficiently than they would have by word of mouth. But the way I figure, garbage is the price we have to pay for freedom of speech.

(Come to think of it, that experiment in the article might have worked better if the first group of writers had been given a really dumb, completely fabricated tabloid-type story to send to their netpals, and then recorded how long it took for the story to go around the planet and back to them -- no doubt in entirely unrecognizable form.)

BTW, here's another game for y'all -- it can be done in either one degree or six degrees. See if you can figure out both ways (there may be many solutions, but I'm thinking of two in particular):

Ex-cell-ent, WK -- I am most impressed (and once again reminded that I'm not as up-to-date on film facts as I used to be)!

Here's what I got for the "one degree":

- Dustin Hoffman was in SPHERE, which featured a simulation (by the alien sphere) of an enraged Archi
Now the "six degrees" version:

- Dustin Hoffman starred in MIDNIGHT COWBOY with Jon Voight

- Jon Voight's daughter is Angelina Jolie

- Angelina Jolie was in GIRL, INTERRUPTED with Winona Ryder

- Winona Ryder was in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS with Johnny Depp

- Johnny Depp was in ED WOOD with Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi

- Bela, the rubber Octopus. etc..... you know the drill :)
In retrospect, there is also a "circular" solution that incorporates elements of both the above, to wit:

- Dustin Hoffman starred in MIDNIGHT COWBOY with Jon Voight

- Jon Voight's daughter is Angelina Jolie

- Angelina Jolie was in THE BONE COLLECTOR with Queen Latifah

- Queen Latifah was with Dustin Hoffman in SPHERE, which featured a simulation (by the alien sphere) of an enraged Archi

OK, ready for a tricky one?

Fantastic, WK! And that wasn't even the one I was thinking of. You've named some films that are faves of mine too. Stewart had such a brief role in DUNE that I'm surprised anyone remembered him. And I loved MUNCHHAUSEN too, though I saw it aeons ago and I don't recall Sting in it -- what was his role? I do remember that Robin Williams had an "unlisted" major role in it (one of the "detachable head" characters), i.e., not appearing in the credits.

BRAZIL was incredible, though I was really pissed off when they showed it on TV and cut out the entire ending, thus making the last scene the one where Jonathan Pryce and Kim Greist escape together (actually Pryce's wish-fulfillment fantasy while he is being tortured to death) and changing the real, tragic ending to a happy one. Unfortunately I never saw WAG THE DOG, but it's on my "to see" list, especially since many believe that it's a case of "art-imitates-reality-imitating-art".

Patrick Stewart was brilliant in MOBY DICK -- the late Gregory Peck was a very hard act to follow (I was a big fan of GP), but Stewart definitely did the role justice.

And now here's my solution:

- Patrick Stewart ("Sejanus") starred in an episode of I, CLAUDIUS with Patricia Quinn ("Livilla")

- Patricia Quinn ("Magenta") was in THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW with Tim Curry
[The song "Time Warp" is the "it's astounding" reference]

- Tim Curry provides the voice of naturalist "Nigel Thornberry" in Nickelodeon cartoon series THE WILD THORNBERRYS
[The voice-over reference]

- In one THORNBERRYS episode, the featured animal was a benign female GPO who rescued Nigel Thornberry from a deadly whirlpool

Voilà! OK, who wants to offer the next "degrees" challenge?

One degree from Tiny Tim?
I had recently found (in my town dump's freebie shack) an autographed copy of his book, "Beautiful Thoughts", which was signed to Martha Deane, a radio show hostess on WOR in New York.I had e-mailed Victoria Jackson to see if she knew any rabid Tiny Tim fans that would want it; still waiting to hear back on that one. She, of course, was on SNL (many branches from that alone), and appeared in "UHF" with "Wierd" Al Yankovic, Fran Drescher (The Nanny) and Michael Richards ("Kramer" on Seinfeld). There's a thread here leading somewhere to that gloriously silly scene in which John Wayne fights the Evil Rubber Octopus. I'm sorry. I've made all of you nice people wade through all of these quotes and parentheses for no good reason. Something compelled me... I think it was the Tiny Tim and octopus-fighting references... and lack of sleep. I'll shut up now. In-ceph-erable indeed... :bonk:

One degree from Tiny Tim?

Hiya Headfoot --

I like your Zen sig! Yes, I and my first husband Mark were friends of Tiny (who did not want to be called "Herbert") back in '80-'81. We met him when his career was on the decline and he was performing at a small nightclub in Brooklyn. To make a long story short, we got to talking with him backstage and exchanged addresses and phone numbers. We visited him several times at his apartment in the Olcott Hotel (right near the Dakota where John and Yoko had once lived), and met his very motley assortment of friends -- of which, I guess, we were members :D I also remember us appearing in a couple of "indie" films -- more like boring, incomprehensible home movies -- with him; attending one of his recording sessions; going to a party given for him at the Bloomin' Pub on Manhattan's Upper East Side (at which we met Miss Vicki -- who attended though long divorced from him -- and his daughter Tulip Khaury who was nine years old at the time); and an especially enjoyable memory, my getting to accompany (on the guitar) Tiny singing "As Time Goes By" onstage at the same club where we met him.

Unfortunately, when Mark and I divorced, he got all our Tiny Tim memorabilia -- including an audiotape personally dedicated to us by him, of Tiny singing old-time songs accompanied by just his ukulele. And while Mark and I are still netfriends, he has so far failed to make me a copy of the tape as I often requested.

Anyway, I remember Tiny himself as being warm, gracious, outgoing to the point of being hammy, a fascinating conversationalist with an encyclopedic knowledge of vintage American vocal music, and nutty as a pecan pie. Like Michael Jackson he had a horror of germs, but unlike Jacko he didn't let it prevent him from being a very "huggy" type. Also unlike MJ, he loved being recognized by fans in the street, and would always greet them heartily. With him, it was "what you see is what you get" -- his real personality was identical to his stage personality. He really did dye and pomade his long hair, and wear cosmetics (including foundation, powder, and blush). As he did onstage, in real life he often used the expressions "my dear friends" and "thanks be to God in Christ". (He also considered himself a devout though non-denominational Christian -- he was the only child of a Lebanese father and a Jewish mother.)

What many people didn't know about Tiny -- unless they listened to his entire albums -- was that his true voice (as opposed to the "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" falsetto) was a beautiful, rich baritone that captured the nuances of old-time crooners like Russ Columbo and early Bing Crosby, and was vastly superior to the rather weak voice of Rudy Vallee. When Tiny sang love songs from the 1930s, he could make you cry. Had he not presented such an oddball image -- which, of course, was his true self -- he could have been a fine nostalgia-pop singer. Tiny died like a trouper, just as he would have wanted to, but much too early. His death was a great loss to the music world, whether the music world acknowledged that or not.

Well, I don't know if there's any Octo tie-in here, though if you look at the "Immortalized Groaners" thread on the Cephalofun Forum, you'll find a Tiny Tim / Ceph joke that I inflicted on TONMO readers many moons ago.... 8)

SHAKESPEARE:

- The film SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE featured Gwyneth Paltrow.

- Gwyneth played the elf-queen Galadriel in FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.

- FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING featured an ultra-mega-supersquid.

"WACKY WALL-WALKERS":

Aaargh, you're right! I can't help it, though -- all pale, ethereal, sylphlike screen goddesses look alike to me. Come to think of it, so do all pale, ethereal, sylphlike screen gods. Too anemic, if y'ask me.... why send out all those wispy Elven types against an army of Uruk-Hai, when Queen Latifah and The Rock coulda singlehandedly body-slammed all them nasties to a pulp?

Anyway, Kat, thanks for your quick "save" of the solution. And while we're on the subject, here's one that Gollum would classify as "tricksy" (actually it's got nothing to do with LotR, I just thought that was a cute word :D ). It begins with a character actor whose most famous portrayal is close to my heart, namely:

JOHN RATZENBERGER in 6 degrees, none of which involve animated features.

JOHN RATZENBERGER in 6 degrees, none of which involve animated features.

Testing, one two three.... testing, one two three.... Hello? Is this thing working? Is everyone asleep on this thread? Wake up! Here's the solution:

- John Ratzenberger was in CHEERS with Rhea Perlman

- Rhea is married to Danny DeVito

- Danny was in ROMANCING THE STONE with Michael Douglas

- Michael is the son of Kirk Douglas

- Kirk was in 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA with You-Know-What
OK, so that's only 5 degrees. So sue me.
