View Full Version : 20,000 Leagues & the Ceph Media
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 12:59pm I have been collecting a number of these different items and media for a while now. Some I own, some I am looking for. They do not really fit into my Ceph Furniture, or Ceph Jewelry threads.
Still, I thought 20,000 Leagues is such a rich vein to tap especially with all of its variants into books, movies, children's sets, and such that I would start a thread for it.
After all, we are the ceph central site (try that illiteration!). I thought Culture & Entertainment the fitting place for a thread of such media.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:04pm Thsi is a children's version that is animated. It's not bad and is better than some of the others I have seen.
Besides, the cover is great.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:05pm As you can tell this one is older. I believe its is from the mid-70's.
I'll let you know as soon as I own it.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:08pm Another comic submitted for your approval...
This one is by Classics Illustrated. Calssics Illustrated did about 5 variants of these. I own a couple of them already.
The art is not bad. A little campy, granted, but not bad.
Personally I think the cover looks like an old Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew mystery...
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:28pm Aye, submariners, this would seem to be way off course.
All this is, is an ad for Absolute. All it uses (in the traditional Absolute minimalist way) is a bottle and a tentacle. Boom! Emotinal, evocative, and with very little prompting.
That's the beautiful thing about these little monstros that we love. They are very emotive of the ocean. They are quick to symbolize the water and all that it entails.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:39pm This is something that many friends covet.
Another little something from Disney. It's a 20,000 Leagues patch. I blew it up so that all could see the detail.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:55pm This is a fun little piece which should remind some of us older people of our childhoods in the early 70's.
This was put out by Golden Records and is a record set (they normally had a book that came wit it and one would turn the page when there was a beep).
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 01:58pm Here is another oldie...
It's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea the Game".
Of course, it's put out by Disney which is why the ship is so familiar. Check out the ceph in the lower, left hand.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 02:46pm Beware, these are the same DVD's...
As you can imagine, I love the art work from the first cover; however the second cover is what the animation is like from both DVD's.
Donnerboy Sep 12th, 2006, 03:05pm This was actually pretty neat.
It is from Eyewitness Classics and gives the child a lot of little inclusios in the margins. Everything from the path the ship took to seal life, under water forests, and historical ships.
It was also sponsored by Chic-fil-A.
WhiteKiboko Sep 12th, 2006, 05:40pm It was also sponsored by Chic-fil-A.
"We didn't invent the myth about Giant Squid attacking boats, just the Giant Squid sandwich..."
maybe?
Donnerboy Sep 13th, 2006, 09:40am Here is another children's set with a record.
Donnerboy Sep 13th, 2006, 11:29am Here is a fun little piece.
You should be able to tell by the big eared guy that this is a Disney based stamp. This also allows the Nautilus in the background to have the same overall look as the movie including the pet seal of Nemo's and the same looking squid.
Donnerboy Sep 14th, 2006, 09:39am Ok, you realize that a thrill seeker like Race Bannon wasn't going to miss this kind of action.
Donnerboy Sep 15th, 2006, 11:36am This is just a fun piece by an unknown artist.
The men of the Nautilus look very conquistadorian to me and I like the machinations almost hidden in the border.
Donnerboy Sep 15th, 2006, 11:42am In Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he wrote and Kevin O'Neil drew a very specific Nemo.
We are to believe that the story takes place sometime after the events in Jules Verne's tale, and we see a side of Nemo because of it. Nemo seems to have not been the same after his encounter with the monster of the deep and everything he has reflects that.
Ala a Where's Waldo? book, see if you can find the ceph hidden in this picture of Nemo's submarine.
Donnerboy Sep 19th, 2006, 12:08pm It ain't your mom's snow globe...
...and you probably don't want your eye too near it at first.
This is a Disney piece that is highly reminiscent of the Nautilus itself with the bronze look of the iron plates, rivets, and the several brass circles that the Disney Imagineers built into the hull. However, when one looks into the eye of this, they see not the tranquility of the sea, but a monstrous denizen from the deadly depths.
Donnerboy Sep 19th, 2006, 12:20pm I love different copies of the book.
As they are often classified with children's literature (I am not quite sure why), they often have wonderfully evocative covers. Notice the swimming partner this guy has.
It's funny. People are so protective of their children, yet there are many pieces of art out there for childrens' books that are a little scary. Nacy drwe, Hardy boys and the like always had scary covers.
Personally, I think it's healthy. Kids like to be scared a little. Isn't that why we get on rollercoasters?
Donnerboy Sep 19th, 2006, 12:23pm Here's another great kids version with a great cover.
Apparently Nemo is just hanging out with this ceph for a bit.
Donnerboy Sep 20th, 2006, 12:47pm Something I have listed before in my Ceph Furniture thread.
This is a Disney frame for 20,000 Leagues. I just love that it has a giant squid wrapped half way around it.
Donnerboy Sep 21st, 2006, 02:09pm This is a cool little box.
The top half comes off revealing the compartment.
Donnerboy Sep 25th, 2006, 11:05am This is just a piece of art I found online.
Still, I liked it. The octo is represented as a kind of an "old man of the sea". His beard and mustache turn into tentacles as he sits and rests and plays/admires something he took from the sea's top years before and now he spies the nautilus.
Notice in the bottom left-hand corner the old fashioned dolphin as used by the submariner's in the navy today.
Donnerboy Sep 26th, 2006, 10:41am Here you go, an original Disney 20,000 Leagues poster.
I love this old campy style of stuff. The floating heads, the intense looks, the kooky fonts (all shot in CinemaScope!).
Please notice our favorite ceph down in the bottom right hand...
Donnerboy Sep 28th, 2006, 10:39am I do not own this game...
But I am looking for it. Actively. If anyone has owned a copy of this, I am interested.
Donnerboy Sep 29th, 2006, 10:59am Another children's illustrated book.
Personally, I think this ceph looks like he is half asleep.
Donnerboy Oct 2nd, 2006, 11:57am Here is an old black and white shot from the Disnet Ride.
It lets people look eye to eye with a monsetr from the deep.
Donnerboy Oct 3rd, 2006, 02:05pm Here is another game I found.
There are a couple of more which I am hunting even now.
Donnerboy Oct 13th, 2006, 10:05am I am really not sure what this is.
It was a called a frame tray puzzle on the web, but what is that. They are finding a treasure, snd typically looking a little fishy.
It's fun, but I wanted a little more.
Donnerboy Oct 25th, 2006, 09:42am This is a nice set from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the movie.
It is not cheap at about $100, but is a great model of the ship.

Donnerboy Jan 21st, 2008, 04:33pm Ok, you realize that a thrill seeker like Race Bannon wasn't going to miss this kind of action.
I was given one of these for Christmas burned onto a CD. It's all the voices of the show and it's really great.
