View Full Version : Just got my first octopus!!!
binaryterror Aug 22nd, 2006, 12:55pm He is currently acclimating, and is 4" from arm to arm. He is sweet! I have a 2.5g hex tank inside of my 55g so I can spot feed him easier, etc. I ordered him from marinedepotlive.com. I needf you guys to help me name him! Here are the pics!!

monty Aug 22nd, 2006, 12:57pm :welcome: to the new :octopus:
Mizu Aug 22nd, 2006, 01:08pm Nice little thing
binaryterror Aug 22nd, 2006, 01:28pm He was swimming around in the bag, and wasn't sressed at all! They even included a little crab for him to snack on during the trip here. I would highly recommend marinedepotlive.com!
binaryterror Aug 22nd, 2006, 02:10pm He is already out and about as you can see, and I am really hoping that he will stay like this. I will try feeding him tomorrow. I am very excited!!! And yes I know there is a Clown Trigger in there. I think I may have just sold him, so the octo will be by itself! Thanks guys!
binaryterror Aug 22nd, 2006, 04:31pm Well here are some updated pics, but I am wondering if you guys think this is too much stuff in there?

******** Now in the third pic, on top of his head, he has something that looks like a scrape or something like that. But he was in the back with a hermit crab, so I was thinking the hermit maybe picked at him before it was eaten, or is it just some other type of mechanical injury? I am mainly wondering if any of you think it may be something bad? Thanks
sorseress Aug 23rd, 2006, 12:30pm I'm certainly no expert, but it looks to me like you're giving him a lot of enrichment. THey might be like little kids, however, and benefit from having their toys swapped every so often. Helps keep kids from getting bored with their toys, and it might work that way with octos, too.
joefish84 Aug 23rd, 2006, 01:04pm that clown trigger will rip that octo apart... get it out fast
binaryterror Aug 23rd, 2006, 02:18pm Yeah, that is why my octo is islolated. I am trying to sell him as we speak!
DHyslop Aug 23rd, 2006, 05:32pm Do you have another tank you could put the trigger in until he's gone? I think that even the small octopus might be able to overcome the weight of those shells if he decided he wanted to.
Dan
binaryterror Aug 23rd, 2006, 06:28pm Thanks for the concern, but I just sold my Clown Trigger and he is picking him up hopefully tomorrow or Friday. Then the octo can be FREE!!!
thosewrights Aug 23rd, 2006, 08:19pm :welcome: to your new octo. Did you name him yet? I think it is great that you put so much effort in providing entertainment for your little octo. :squidwar: :spongebo: :snail:
binaryterror Aug 23rd, 2006, 08:49pm Thanks. I just fed him some FW feeder guppies, and he ate all 3! But I never got to see him catch them, I just noticed that they are gone! He seemed to really enjoy hunting them as far as I could tell. But no I haven't named him yet. I can't think of anything! I was sort of thinking about Henry. But who knows...
cuttlegirl Aug 23rd, 2006, 09:02pm But no I haven't named him yet. I can't think of anything! I was sort of thinking about Henry. But who knows...
You do know about Henry the octopus from the Wiggles, don't you???
binaryterror Aug 23rd, 2006, 09:09pm Haha, of course! that is his new name! it's official... Henry The Octopus!!!
jc45 Aug 23rd, 2006, 10:07pm You know, when I first saw his picture I thought he looked like a Henry... to bad I didn't post it earlier...
Joey
Jean Aug 23rd, 2006, 10:50pm Thanks.
I like Henry! We had a Henry too...........turned out to be Mrs Henry tho'! Very small for her species so she conned us into thinking she was a juv he (no hectocotylus and small size = juv male in this species.........mature females are usually BIG!)
FYI I wouldn't feed FW food too often, it's too fatty and can be lacking in nutrients for an octi, Marine species are better. FW food is a treat food!!!!
J
binaryterror Aug 24th, 2006, 11:22am Ok thanks. I will feed my guppies a few times a week probably. But I noticed that he has always been sitting in the same shell with his head out. And he isn;t moving around like he was before. So is he just calming down and getting settled, or what?
binaryterror Aug 24th, 2006, 02:11pm I just fed him a hermit crab. The shell was as big as his mantle, but the crab is like 1/2" maybe. He stuck a tentacle in the shell and is trying to pull it out as we speak, but it looks like he is having a little trouble...
Nancy Aug 24th, 2006, 04:32pm So can I now welcome Henry the Octopus?! And add him to the List of Our Octopuses, now that he has a name?
Maybe you should try feeding Henry a few smaller crabs. Have you also tried feeding pieces of frozen (or fresh) raw shrimp (thawed, of course, if frozen)?
We advise our members to avoid feeder fish - often these aren't in good health and may have received treatments that would be harmful to your octo - inverts (crabs, for instance) can't be treated with copper, so you know they're safe.
Nancy
binaryterror Aug 24th, 2006, 05:28pm Yeah! It's been my dream to be on the list of Octopuses!!! Do you need any other info for him to be on "The List". I have tried feeding him thawed frozen raw shrimp, and he took it and ate it right away!
But the crab, he is still holding onto it by his mouth, and I can't tell if he is still trying to eat it, or if he just likes the shell, LOL!
Yeah, with the feeder fish, maybe I should stop feeding him them... They were so cheap though! WOuld like 1 time a week be OK? Or will that not make a difference...?
I almost forogt, here are some new pics after I finally realeased him into his new "BIG" home!

Nancy Aug 24th, 2006, 11:59pm I added Henry to the list. I'm trying to add some additional information, such as which state you live in (I don't have that information). Was Henry sold to you as a briareus?
It would be a good idea to stop offering feeder guppies, just to be safe.
Nice pics of Henry and your tank. Is your tank open at the top? - if so, you could use duct tape and tape some sort of mesh or netting over it. He's pretty small to be heading off somewhere, but just in case.
Nancy
binaryterror Aug 25th, 2006, 11:40am Thanks for adding him! I live in Ohio, and I bought it from marinedepotlive.com as a Bimac. Wy do you ask if he was sold as a Briareus? He IS a Bimac, right???
And my tank is completly closed. It has a glass top in the from, and the bacl had 4" of open space, so I duct taped some plastic screen/mech back there, so there are no more openings.
And I will stop feeding him guppies, but I REALLY want to feed just 1 more so I can see him eat it. I never got to see him eat one before. Oh, and how much should I feed him every day?
binaryterror Aug 25th, 2006, 06:24pm I was ready an article on Bimacs, and I noticed it said that Bimacs have blue in the false eyespots. Mine has a false eye spot, but it has no blue in it at all. Does this mean he isn't a Bimac?
EDIT: I looked up pics of Bimaculoids, and Bimaculatus octos, and found out that mine is a Bimaculatus since it has the 2 white spots about mid way up his mantle. Does this change anything? Do they need everything the same as Bimaculoids?
Nancy Aug 25th, 2006, 10:41pm You need to look carefully at the eyespot. O. bimaculoides has an unbroken chain, as shown in the first photo in the Bimac Care Sheet.
http://www.tonmo.com/cephcare/BimacCareSheet.php
A number of other species have false eyespots (the scientific term for false eyespot is ocellus).
O. bimaculatus is very similar to O. bimaculoides but is distinguished by being larger (but not always), having small-sized eggs and a different ocellus. The eyespot of O. bimaculatus also has the color blue, but has spokes and not an unbroken chain.
Your octo is still small, maybe it's difficult to have a clear view of the eyespot.
Nancy
binaryterror Aug 25th, 2006, 11:13pm The eyespot of O. bimaculoides also has the color blue, but has spokes and not an unbroken chain.
Nancy
Do you mean Bimaculatus by that? Because earlier in your post, you said Bimaculoides has a blue chain, not spokes. (Note from Nancy: yes, correction made in previous post) I will really try and get a better look.
binaryterror Aug 27th, 2006, 04:21pm Ok, I found these FW crabs that look just like Fiddler crabs, and I saw them at a petsmart. So I am wondering if I could buy some for my octo to eat? I can get some small ones and they have ones with a really big claw also. LMK!!
binaryterror Aug 27th, 2006, 08:16pm I just took this video. and please ignore the voices! lol

binaryterror Aug 27th, 2006, 08:17pm I will try and take more, better vids. But I had my digi camk on hand, and he doesn't come out too often, so I thought I would make one for myself!
Jean Aug 28th, 2006, 06:21pm Ok, I found these FW crabs that look just like Fiddler crabs, and I saw them at a petsmart. So I am wondering if I could buy some for my octo to eat? I can get some small ones and they have ones with a really big claw also. LMK!!
Freshwater anything is not ideal food for a marine animal. Although parasites etc are not likely to transfer, the food has the wrong proportions of nutrients (often way too fatty and lacking in enough protein and the correct fats). It's kinda like a human living on a diet of potato chips and sweets (sorry candy  )You really need to look into getting marine crabs or shrimps!
Cheers
Jean
binaryterror Aug 31st, 2006, 08:54pm I was playing with Henry today, and I was loling. I was blowing bubbles out of airline tube, and everytime he would attack it! I thought it was so funny, because he would latch onto where the bubbles come out, and it would shake him around from the bubbles, etc. But he wouldn't let go until I stopped blowing bubbles! I think he is playing. LOL but I enjoyed it, so maybe I will do it more often.
Jean Aug 31st, 2006, 10:36pm Sounds like fun! but be careful with the bubbles, if they get into the mantle cavity that can cause serious health issues for the octi. They also like air filled containers, they pull them to the bottom, let them go so they bob to the top and then "recapture" it and repeat!!!!
J
binaryterror Sep 1st, 2006, 04:06pm Haha, I will have to try that! And with the air in the mantle, how doesnt air get in there when they crawl out of tanks sometimes?
Spocktopus Sep 2nd, 2006, 09:25am My octo likes to be in the bubbles that I have aerating his tank. He will allow his mantle cavity to fill, and then make his way across the tank blowing the bubbles out.
3000gtman Sep 8th, 2006, 05:42pm ill purchase that clown trigger from you if you didnt already sell it. e-mail me at hotstuff0140@aol.com and i would love to talk more. hopefully you didnt sell the clown, also what size is he. and how much would you want for him

binaryterror Sep 9th, 2006, 09:14pm I am sorry, I sold him a few weeks ago. But check out this vid I made. it is a vid of the octo eating a feeder fish (sw), and my tank set-up. LMK what you think!

Lil Shark Sep 9th, 2006, 09:21pm He is so adorable. I was trying to tell my mother about how you need to keep octos stimulated and she got a kick out of your tank set up. Great video. Henry has a very photogenic side hehe
binaryterror Sep 9th, 2006, 09:33pm haha, thanks!
xavier Sep 10th, 2006, 12:36am haha that video is awsome henry is funny makes me relise why i want one so bad! great job on the tank set up! what kind of fish are those???
binaryterror Sep 10th, 2006, 10:08pm They were labeled af SW feeder guppies at my lfs
AprylWillis Sep 11th, 2006, 03:33am Welcome to the site! I see you are already enjoying/spoiling "Henry"!
My new octi arrives either tomorrow, or Tuesday. Good luck on your new octi! Can you afford to feed him shrimp? I found a place that sells marine shrimp for $24.99 for 85. ShrimpStuff.com is just way too expensive in my opinion--I am sure they have great quality stuff!
"Apey"
kingsnar Sep 11th, 2006, 12:27pm Is he a bimac?
AprylWillis Sep 11th, 2006, 07:53pm I don't know yet, I'll be getting him tomorrow.
Brock Fluharty Sep 12th, 2006, 09:24pm Your tank (and octo) has inspired me to convert my 75 reef to an octo tank. I'm gonna have to sell me clam, fish etc, but i'd rather have an octo, lol!!!
