View Full Version : Octopus Feeding

I finally got a 6 inch O.Briareus from my lfs a couple of days ago. They told me that I only needed to feed it one crab every other day and I was wondering if this amount would be enough. I am also going out of town for a couple of days and was wondering if putting in 3 or 4 crabs would work or if the octopus would eat them all in a single day. Any info would really be appreciated.

! crab ever other day:shock: I suggest 2 a day. but it matters how big the crabs and octopus are.once I went away for a week and left my octopus 10 crabs for him to munch on. It worked pritty well. (I did have someone look in on him everyday to make sure he was ok but that should work.)

You need to feed your octopus every day. Octo don't overeat, so offer food and find out how much it wants. You should remove the uneaten food.

Some people try to cut costs by feeding a crab every other day and offering thawed frozen shrimp on the non-crab days. But all octopuses love their crab dinners! And it's important that they have some live food.

How is your new octopus adjusting?

The first 36 hours he seemed really curious. He was moving all over the tank and sitting in different spots all day. The last day though, he has found a cave and hasn't really moved that far from it (that I have seen). I can only see a couple of his arms come out every now and then. I have been putting crabs in everyday and there is always a pile of crab shells outside of the cave within a few hours. Even though it hasn't come out lately, it is eating.

I had the same with my last octo. didn't see him during the day. but when it was dark he came out and crawled around in the tank.

I generally fed live crabs, but when I ran out, I also offered frozen foods. he did come out to take those, even in the middle of the day

Ossie won't eat frozen food; she's been spoiled by us. We keep blue-legged and red-legged hermit crabs in her tank, as well as a few snails and every few days, we drop a couple of ghost shrimp in her tank. She loves loves loves small red crabs as well.

I've no real evidence that she eats the snails. So far, what I can deduce from the remains is she plays with them to death. Most of the dead snails shells I've found are emptied, their carcasses floating intact nearby (as near as I can tell - I don't know what snail innards look like and I'm not about to do a really close up look.)

About the ghost shrimp, I've heard from others here that they aren't too nutritious so that's why I only give her a couple every few days. I think she's learning to pace herself with those since the last time, I found one alive instead of none.

Good luck with yours and let us know what happens

what the heck does this post mean?

Google (and others) have earned a heck of a lot of money with a system of contextual advertisements. Google scans the text of each thread and tries to determine what the heck kind of things we'd like to buy, then places the appropriate ads on the page. When one of us clicks one of the ads, the site gets a little kickback.

Since TONMO is really a specialized group, it tends to fool Google. For example, in this thread we talked the heck about crabs. Most people buy crabs to eat, so Google gave us a heck of a lot of ads about frozen crabs. In other threads we've seen advertisements for Shea butter when Dr. Steve posts a lot.

Heckingly yours,

Dan

is there any sites that sell fiddler crabs in large bunches like 15 or 20?

Yes, the Aquaculture Store, www.aquaculturestore.com - look under salt water inverts. I ordered from them many times. You can buy as few as 10 and the shipping is included in the price (priority mail). It worked very well for me.

This might be a fun new supporters thread, post "interesting words" and see what ads Google puts forward

On a more serious issue, Sepia elegans?!?!

As long as the octopus takes it, you're in good shape, it's just convincing your ceph to take frozen food that is the hard part...

lol yea i noticed that after trying to feed him another piece... i gae it to him and he acted excited to have it then he came to the top of the glass so i opened the glass top and he pulled it out fro under him and held it up and over the edge of the tank then dropped it on the floor then swam to a nearby rock and watched me.... they are almost like spoiled toddlers

Hello !

Along these lines, I am a newbie and have only had my new octo for 3 days. It seems he's a hunter and wants nothing to do with anything frozen even if it's very fresh.

My LFS told me he likes ghost shrimp and snails, but I feel like he's only eating candy and am wondering what the equivalent in saltwater would be to a ghost shrimp?

I have so far tried to get nutrients in him with 2 kinds of raw frozen shrimp, krill and a clam. These were all ignored completely. Yesterday I got him 2 hermits and brine (he likes to play with brine, probably because it has no nutritional value what so ever). Both hermits are still scooting around unharmed. I have a mollusk, a clam and an oyster all alive in his tank, but since he ignored the first clam I am leaving those all alone for now.

In short, he's ignoring everything healthy and eating nothing but candy.

On the clam thing, I was very suprised he didn't go for that. I had trouble cracking that puppy open too! I thought you could cut through the back muscle and it would open...as if! I had to pry for a while all around it to crack it, then I put it in the tank with the top on open a bit and slightly sideways. I was wondering if I should take the top all the way off or put it in fully open for him. Maybe he didn't get it or I manhandled it to much??? Of course I didn't touch the inside at all.

He's happily trying to escape, as expected, but I want him healthy too! Any ideas???

This morning I put these in for him :snail:
I thought maybe these :goldfish:

Thanks guys!
