View Full Version : Finally Got One!!
91lxstang May 7th, 2006, 09:33pm On friday i finally ordered an octopus and they said it was a vulgaris!!! I got it from saltwaterfish.com and i talked to them and they said it as a vulgaris for sure!!! I paid about 90 bux for it but i dont care it is worth it!! Also, how long will it take to get here? Has anyone on here delt with saltwaterfish.com before? He/she is going into a 55 gal for about 2 months then he/she is going into a 120 gal... Is that 120 going to be big enough for him/her? Man im so excited i cant wait!!!
Nancy May 7th, 2006, 11:10pm You'd better keep in touch with saltwater.com and find out exactly when it's going to arrive. Usually they are shipped overnight (should be), but they may not ship it the day you order it.
I'm trying to determine the minimium tank size for a vulgaris. Some people have suggested 200 gallons, others 150. I don't know about a 120.
If it's a vulgaris from the Caribbean, the body could be 12 inches long and the arms could be 31 inches. (It's going to eat a lot, too!)
They are friendly and usually live longer than a bimac.

clownfish May 8th, 2006, 03:20pm Awsome! Tell us how it goes. I was hesitating on getting one from there but decided not to do to the fact that I have a connection to get a wild caught bimic!!:roll:
Mizu May 8th, 2006, 03:53pm please reveal your connection :)
91lxstang May 8th, 2006, 08:51pm it is a caribbean one!!! also im thinking about just building a 280-330 gal or buying a 180 gal
91lxstang May 9th, 2006, 06:16pm he got to my house about 3 hours ago and i have been acclimating him for about 2 1/2 hours after he got used to the temp for about 30 min.... he looks very healthy and he moves around alot also....

Nancy May 9th, 2006, 06:57pm Welcome to your new octopus! If you tell me what his name is, I'll add him to the List of Our Octopuses.

91lxstang May 9th, 2006, 07:53pm i havnt decided on a name yet... maybe cujo? cause he acts kind of aggressive? the reason i say that is because when i put my finger in the bucket to grap the drip tube out... he lunged at my finger and decided to grab on slowly which i thought wasnt too bad cause he was moving slowly... then all of a sudden he grabbed my hand with all of his arms and began crawling on my hand!!! i pulled him about an inch out of the water and he sprayed me with water like 5 times.....he finally let go but it was kind of sudden how he did it.... and i never realized the grip they have..... he has a mantle about the size of a golf ball and arms about 3 inches.... right now he is in the tank sitting on the back glass not moving... i hope he is ok :(
91lxstang May 9th, 2006, 07:53pm btw... do vulgaris's have small blue dots on both sides of thier mantle? i thought bimacs were the only ones like that
Black96WS6 May 9th, 2006, 08:25pm btw... do vulgaris's have small blue dots on both sides of thier mantle? i thought bimacs were the only ones like that
That's a bimac!! Plus the grabbing and the squirting of water, Thomas used to do that to me when he wanted to be fed, it really sounds like you got a bimac!
Are there 2 blue false eyespots, one on each side?
Also, Vulgaris usually have white markings/splotches all over their body...
91lxstang May 9th, 2006, 09:15pm yea hes a bimac then cause he doesnt have a white spots unless he is flashing his colors!! also, how big will a bimace get because he has leg that are about 3 inches and a mantle that is a tad bit smaller than a golfball... i hope i didnt get an older one ... but oh well.... also how do you get them off when they cling on to you
cuttlegirl May 9th, 2006, 10:49pm Congratulations on your new :baby: Hope he acclimates to his new home!
Mizu May 10th, 2006, 08:11am I rubbed the out side megas's skin when he grabbed me
seems he hated to be touched on anything but the sucker side
rubbing a finger gently over his eye also made him stop biting me
Nancy May 10th, 2006, 12:11pm Hmmm, that's interesting. Ollie loved to be gently rubbed between and above her eyes - she seemed to expcect it after every play session.

91lxstang May 10th, 2006, 08:53pm is it ok to feed him freshwater fiddler crabs?? cause ifed him one tonight cause my freind says has fed his puffers them.... soon as i put it in the tank he came runnin and gobbled it up! so im happy hes eating!!
cuttlegirl May 10th, 2006, 09:06pm Fiddler crabs are live in either brackish or salt water... the LFS will tell you they can live in freshwater and they will even display them in freshwater, but their natural habitat will either be brackish or salt water. So, they should be fine for you new ceph. friend.
91lxstang May 10th, 2006, 09:24pm thats good to know because i work at fish store and i wasnt sure.... i knew they awer brackish but i didnt know they were salt too..... now im happy i wont have to spend a ton feeding him!!
91lxstang May 10th, 2006, 11:20pm he/she becomming very active and is starting to be curious of objects in the tank and small bottles i have put to float on top... he/she still moves slowly towards new things
91lxstang May 11th, 2006, 03:48pm i found another octo for sale near my house thats a vulgaris but the thing is he is missing a leg. They said that he/she chewed its own leg of in shipping tha and that it is a common thing for octos to do when they are stressed? is this true? they also said that it would grow back but not fully. is this true?
joefish84 May 11th, 2006, 04:36pm its a disease called autophagy and it is caused by stress and other things supposedly and the dont ever get over it.
91lxstang May 11th, 2006, 06:16pm they dont get over it as "they will keep chewing legs off" or they dont get ove it as " the leg will not heal properly or wont at all" ?
91lxstang May 11th, 2006, 09:17pm also, how big do bimaculatus grow to be? mine is about the the size of where ur wrist starts to the tip of my middle finger when his legs are all the way out from one leg tip to another leg tip.. so from one leg to another legs end is about 6 inches... so his legs are are about 2-3 inches long... is he still young or no?
91lxstang May 12th, 2006, 08:44pm i picked up that vulgaris i was talking about because none of him arms were missing, the people that told me that were just dumb. hes acclimating right now but he doesnt look very good... hes not moving and his legs are basically limp... but he is breathing and changing colors...
91lxstang May 12th, 2006, 09:39pm .... when i was doing the drip acclimation, i looked up at my tank and noticed little 1/8-1/4 inch long white slug looking things moving around on the glass that had NEVER been therebefore.... i also noticed thousands of little tiny tiny whitish clear critters on the glass also.... i wasnt sure if my octo would be safe in the tank with these things? what should i do?
91lxstang May 12th, 2006, 10:11pm anyone know?
cuttlegirl May 12th, 2006, 11:06pm My guess is that they are copepods. Copepods will not hurt your tank or your octo... Do they look teardrop shaped?
91lxstang May 12th, 2006, 11:13pm the small tiny critters are so small i cant tell what shape they are but the slug things are kinda shaped like a teardrop i guess
heres a pic of what they look like on the glass, sry its the best i could do lol

cuttlegirl May 12th, 2006, 11:15pm You have copepods...
Here is another thread on this topic...

91lxstang May 12th, 2006, 11:26pm ok.... i hope thats what it is.... the three large slugs are still bothering me cause i dont know what they are... they are about 1/8'' to about 1/2''
DHyslop May 13th, 2006, 12:11am $10 on the genus Stomatella. Run a Google Image search and I think you'll have your slug. They're harmless but multiply like rabbits.
Dan
91lxstang May 13th, 2006, 12:22pm thats not them either... they are white in color
DHyslop May 13th, 2006, 12:38pm On both sides?
91lxstang May 13th, 2006, 03:15pm yep....
