View Full Version : Mythos Minis
Graeme Mar 13th, 2006, 04:13pm Does anyone collect miniatures, be it RPG or Wargames? If you do you'll maybe be familiar with te RAFM lead Cthulhu Mythos miniatures. I paint up some in my spare time, used to be an avid wargamer, but not having much time these days (I did buy me a snazzy Gundam Kit last week though! THat was fun to build). Anyhoo, here's some I painted earlier- anyone else paint? Post 'em! BTW, a few need re-touched, and varnished.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/elderthng.jpg An Elder Being, or Elder Thing from At the Mountains Of Madness, my fave short!! Probably my most cherished mini!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/shoggoth1.jpg A shoggoth, also from the same story. THis is actually 2 shoggie models, I just sat them together to make an even bigger, badder beastie! One's varnished, the other aint.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/ghoul2.jpg One of Pickman's ghouls! :bugout:

Graeme Mar 13th, 2006, 04:22pm More!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/Gug1.jpg A gug; very weird looking, and BIG! From Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, another good story, if you like meandering "epics" that twist and turn everywhere, very dreamlike, and very "dark fantasy"!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/DSCF0636.jpg the Great Cthulhu, Himself. This is a BIIIIG, hefty model. I can't even call it a miniature! Entered it in the painting compo at last year's local wargames/modelling convention (one of the best in Scotland!), but never won. Ach well. I was expecting that anyway looking at some of hte entries, but this woman who enters those plastic pre-painted jacobite statues you find in tacky souvineer shops won YET AGAIN!! AND she got second or third prize as well! Bit of a farce like, but it's still a good day!
Appologies if these pics are too big, I'll post smaller ones if need be.

um... Mar 13th, 2006, 05:07pm Sweeeeeeeeet. No more?
cthulhu77 Mar 13th, 2006, 06:04pm Kind of bummed here. My great god sure has a small wanker.
OctoPussyAZ Mar 13th, 2006, 06:14pm I just think it's curious that everyone makes Cthulhu green... it's obviously being transmitted to us in our nightmares.
Toren Mar 13th, 2006, 07:01pm Oh me! Me! I have some of those minis! I have the gug and the shoggoth and others. I painted the gug blue to match my gug costume (http://www.thickets.net/content/view/51/46/ just over halfway down in between the two insects).
There is actually a newer Cthulhu mini (not quite as big) that I like a lot better than the RAFM one (not that it's to sneeze at). It's called "eldritch demon" by Reaper minis.
Phil Mar 13th, 2006, 07:24pm Exellent Graeme. Those Gug and the Shoggoth beasties reminds me of something out of John Carpenter's The Thing. You just need a moulten husky head or two in there.
Toren Mar 13th, 2006, 07:29pm Here's the Cthulhu mini I was talking about
http://www.coolminiornot.com/70823 (http://www.coolminiornot.com/70823)
(I did not paint this - I'm still working on mine)
I'll have to wait until I buy a digital camera before I can post pics of my painted minis.

In the story he's mentioned as being green.

Good use of varnish to make the monster look slimey. Even on the prepainted D&D minis I sometimes hit them with the glossy spray to give them a wet sheen look.
erich orser Mar 13th, 2006, 07:41pm Toren,
You've got to post pics of that Gug costume!
um... Mar 14th, 2006, 07:04am Kind of bummed here. My great god sure has a small wanker.
Greg, you of all people should know that it's not the size of the, uh, monster that matters, but the unspeakable eldritch horror in it.
:indiffer:
Graeme Mar 14th, 2006, 12:25pm Sweeeeeeeeet. No more?
I'm working on it. I'll have to repaint some of them. I've got more tme on my hands now, hopefully, so I'll have to get back into painting.
Kind of bummed here. My great god sure has a small wanker.
You use wanker for THAT!? it's a bit more... err... explicit over here. Means he who partakes in the hand-shanty... I suppose it's like how you guys in the States use the word fanny to describe yer bum whereas over here it's again, a bit rude:wink:
ahem... what did I wanna say? Oh yeah. That's not his "winkie", it's just a bot of... well... Blod I suppose. Remember he isn't flesh and blood and so he's gonna be breaking up, oozing about and reforming all over hte place, and I think that's just what that is.... or a rather nasty hernia! :goofysca: ouch!

Phil, that's exactly what went through my mind when I first saw the miniatures, 'specially the Gug!!
Oh, and Toren, that's a VERY nice Cthulhu! You're in Darkest of hte Hillside Thickets, eh? What kind of music do you play? Is it metal? Most bands that borrow from the Mythos are Death or Black metal, like Nile, or Yog Sothoth (only listened to Nile really), oh and the occasional 'Tallica song. Think I said somewhere else that I was spaeking to a guy who likes the Misfits nad we were thinking of putting together a HPL-themed band (or at least do some themed songs) just to get out and gigging a bit round the local circuit, I spose. By the wya, that's a wicked-sick Gug cossie! Fantastic!

Why do you force me to hijack this thread? Oh wait, I guess I brought it up. We are definitely not death metal. Though we are heavy rock/punk pop/alterna-grunge/whatever. You can listen to several songs here: http://www.thickets.net/content/blogsection/9/38/ (I recommend The Math Song and 20 Minutes of Oxygen for an introductory listen)
That photo doesn't really show the split forearms that well, but they're there. I try for authenticity in my Lovecraft monster costumes. There's a few more here (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/toren_atkinson/album?.dir=851e&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/toren_atkinson/my_photos)

Graeme Mar 15th, 2006, 05:56am Those are some pretty mental get-ups! You guys really do have to come to Scotland some time!! By the way, I appologise for the seriously bad typing. I need a new keyboard as that one's totally on the blink! I'm at uni now, and so I can actualyl type and make sense for the time being!

great story eh kat?
Graeme Mar 15th, 2006, 04:28pm That was a funny story! Has Neil Gaiman not contributed to the Mythos?
Here's the Yithian beastie I'm doing just now. The new project, as it were.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/yithpaint1.jpg it's a bit bright, because of the flash, it's more like:
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/Roadkilldemon/yithpaint2.jpg but it's not a great photo.
Oh, and just to put a face to the forumer! Here's me painting! I know I look a bit rough, it's because I've developed a cold, and my eyes are tired (I've also got an annoying cough, but that's a different matter!)

Toren Mar 23rd, 2006, 06:54pm I don't know how much you guys know about Clix (i.e. HeroClix) but Wizkids is putting out a ginormous Cthulhu to go with their HorrorClix line.
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=40709
Graeme Mar 27th, 2006, 04:43am NO WAY Toren!!! I must have that thing! How much does it retail at? I played a bit of Mageknight and Wizkids' Mechwarrior game, and, along with one of my mates (who's a massive historical ship fan) got into their Pirats of the Spanish Maine game; it would be cool if they released a Kraken or giant squid miniature for that game.

It's not released yet, and I hear it may be released only as an "exclusive", meaning you have to get it at a convention or possibly directly through their website? Don't get your hopes too high! Luckily I am the head of the Vancouver Gaming Guild and we put on 3-4 gaming cons a year so hopefully I'll at least be able to see it "in the flesh"
Graeme Mar 29th, 2006, 04:55am .... excuse me while I go and sit in a darkened room and cry...
They wouldn't go and do something nasty like that would they? Only make it an exclusive!?

Even worse they could make it an exclusive and then when you've blown the rent money on it they could change their minds. (happened to me with magic cards)
Graeme Mar 31st, 2006, 04:49am That is quite nasty! I've seen some in this shop here that go for between £5 and £10, and probably more. I wouldn't spen that much money on a card... even if it IS Undescovered Paradise, possibly one of the most useful M:TG cards ever!

black lotus+ channel +fireball = one round kill. I hated it when they banned channel from tourneys. hey any mythos based cards cropped up in M:TG? I quit playing about 4 years ago when the local card shop closed. black lotus used to sell for around $150 US.
Graeme Apr 11th, 2006, 07:14am $150!? That's like £75-£100. For a card, that's pretty bad. OK, makes £5 sound totally paltry now.
Anyways, as an update to the Yith mini- I have finished it, and taken a load of piccies. I'll get it loaded up here either this afternoon or tomorrow sometime. I'm kinda pleased with it, but as usual, there's a couple things I'd liked to have done better; like if I had some real pearlescent paint for the "trunk"/cone; as it stands i just had to drybrush a whole host of random colours onto it. The nippers are nice though:grin: Apart from that, it's OK I guess.

Or the Call of Cthulhu CCG http://www.cthulhuccg.com/

Graeme Apr 12th, 2006, 06:26am Go for it Toren!! Wanna see!
I've got a shedload of Cthulhu CCG, and I think I've only played it once or twice, but I got it to try and get my mates back into that sorta thing.

Actually I think my friend Jamie painted this for me. But yes, putty. I have more pics I just haven't trimmed and posted them. But I will soon.
monty Apr 20th, 2006, 09:36pm In my distant youth, I bought a few boxes of Call of Cthulhu miniatures... I just discovered that I still have them (even though I haven't played CoC for many years, and never really got my friends to play it that much). I hadn't realized how many of them I had painted... Anyway, if any of you more adept miniature-painters are interested in some of them, they're really just collecting dust where I have them now... I have a box of 1920ish people and their accessories, a box of "creatures," and a box of "horror movie creatures" like vampires and mummies and such, as well as some that were probably packaged separately. Kind of a mixed bag, some painted, some primered, and some just lead. Anyone interested in them? Am I foolish for not trying to sell them on ebay for a fortune (I guess they're "vintage," or at least probably date from somewhere around 1983-1987)...
sorseress Apr 20th, 2006, 10:14pm Yes, you probably are foolish...you might be able to fund your trip to see Dr.Steve if you sell enough of them....or not.
monty Apr 20th, 2006, 10:23pm Yes, you probably are foolish...you might be able to fund your trip to see Dr.Steve if you sell enough of them....or not.
Well, OK, there's no question that I'm foolish in general, the only issue is whether I'm foolish about this in particular
but given what people will pay for a dosidicus beak, anything's possible...

more like the former ($10 bid) than the latter ($70 bid), I'm afraid...
Graeme Apr 21st, 2006, 07:38am !!
Monty, I'd be interested in taking a look at 'em!
Of course, i don't believe in getting something for nothing, so I would be willing to pay a negotiable fee, as long as you don't mind British cheques, or international postal orders or what have you. It would be unfair to expect you to have to pay for shipping and customs or whatever, and I'm sure we could come to an agreement... that is unless there were anyone in the States willing to accept them, then I would (very reluctantly) allow them to have the treasure. Either that or I reckon you should paint them up and post 'em here.
Hmmm, that $86 Cthulhu works out at around £48.65!! Waaaayyyy too tempting.

erich orser Apr 21st, 2006, 08:22am Curse you Limeys, Paddies, Sawneys, and Taffies, with your exchange-rate evil! I remember, during the Reagan administration, when I was living in West Germany and the dollar was worth about 3+ Deutsche Marks! Ah, those were the (long-distant) days.
I don't miss being a teenager for one moment, but maybe if Putin and Bush can just bring back the Cold War... even for a few minutes... man, I could make a killing. It was good to be an American during the Cold War. Yeah, damn that was good. I was just too young to take advantage. Darn. But things were cheap.

And I'm in Canada. Does that get me extra points? We've got good health care!

Bidding war? I want to see you two in a fight to the death over my collection of lead figurines...
Ok, I'll try to find time to take some photos. Are miniatures that some amateur painted of interest (in the sense that you could either touch them up, or dump them into a bucket of paint thinner and start from scratch) or does that take all the fun out of it?
If it helps any, I have 3 boxes of minis from Grenadier Models: "Call of Cthulhu Creatures (6502, 1982)," "Call of Cthulhu Adventures[sic, they mean adventurers] (6501,1982)," and "Chill Nightmares (8501, 1985)"-- I guess "Chill" was some horror-based game system that didn't take off much. I also have some number of mostly Lovecraftian minis that I think I bought individually, including something that appears to be the same Yith miniature you guys both posted about (which is painted), and a "Mountains of Madness" creature (unassembled and unpainted), a Shoggoth (painted boringly), a nightgaunt (painted black, well, 'cuz), a Nyarlathotep-like thing (at least it's tentacle-faced), 2 Mi-Go, a "young of Shub Niggurath," and some other stuff I don't remember (I don't want to unpack the other box right now). It also looks like I got a bag of "props" like guns, boxes, saddles, lanterns, and stuff.
More when I get a chance to take some pix, I guess.
Graeme Apr 22nd, 2006, 08:17pm I'd be interested in one of those Cthulhu boxes, and mebbe another Elder being... to keep my one company, bless the little guy's crinoid socks!

Yup; I've been meaning to take pictures or something... I dug out the boxes recently.
monty Dec 17th, 2007, 12:07am Ok. I started to take one pic of each miniature, but I got frustrated, so I just set them all up and took pics en masse, with a few shots of things that might be particularly interesting.
