$50 for the octo + $35 for shipping = expensive but better than nothing.

If you've been looking these guys say they have limited quantities of Bimaculatus available.

Its worth mentioning there's no way on Earth that Marine Depot knows how to identify any octopus to the species level, much less differentiate O. bimaculoides and O. bimaculatus.

I truly believe that anyone interested in a cephalopod is better off waiting for availability from a diver or hobby breeder here on TONMO than ordering from any retailer.

So, today I lost all but one of my fish (a clown goby who took the 90+F temps) to a heater that failed on. Now, assuming that my tank comes back strong from this reletively soon I'd like to put an octo into it. Its a 24 gallon aquapod, but I'm buying a 29 gallon and I could very easily move the LR and filter floss over and have a stable set up thats a tad bigger.

So what kind of Octo and where could I get it?

Bobby,

Bimacs are nearing the end of their natural lifespan now. The current crop that most of us have were born in August, and at least one has already died of old age. If you bought one today you might have as little as a few weeks with it. There will probably be another crop available in the fall.

Brock,

Don't let Dana (or his girlfriend) see that! I can guarantee he is a VERY much a guy . I have not met him (as in face to face) but I have bought several things directly from him (not via eBay), talked with him at length over the phone, briefly met the guy he works for last week (Tom of Tom's Tropicals) and he used to do some airport driving for SealifeInc.net (I am the webmaster here so thanks for the mention since I don't feel I can brag on Ken too much on the forum). Small world

What I did not know was that Dana closed his eBay store and started his own website. The eBay store closing must have happened very recently since his link to see what else he has for sale is not working and there are still some loose ends on the site.

If anyone is interested, Dana is a FL keys diver and will take orders for unusual fish or critters. Just remember that the warehouse is the ocean and things are not neatly placed in tanks to be picked out and shipped the next day.

Ken (Sealifeinc.net) usually gets the Mercs during crab season but rarely gets them at other times of the year (late December - late February). He just kind of shakes his head at me for my love of cephs and seahorses but has carried more of both since I have such a strong interest. Trapper came from Ken.

Brock,

I think Dana closed the store because he started the website and wanted out from under the ever increasing eBay costs (Russia, are you yanking my chain? Dana is so laid back I would not imagine him going out of the country to work but ...). It was fun to tell Ken about the new site since your post gave me one upsmanship on him .

The Keys group is an interesting mixture of heavy politics, and semi-covert competition with varying degrees of conservation mixed in. It is impossible to have been a diver/fisherman there for very long and not have noticed the changes but what to do about the problem is a never ending battle. Ken recently (the day before I went down there) got permission to "plant" some of the staghorn frags he has been growing for the last 5 years on his LR farm. He recently went to a ceremony in Washington to receive an award for his conservation efforts in Florida and will be featured on NBC sometime soon (footage completed but date is not yet known).

I recieve one from Saltwaterfish.com tomorrow. They apparently still have them in stock. There is a $9 "fuel charge" on top of the manditory $79 minimum order.

I was told via email from the swf.com staff that they receive their octopuses from a collector in the Caribbean. Considering the ones I've seen from swf.com have false eye-spots like a Bimac, I assume they are O. Filosus, aka the Caribbean Two-Spot Octopus.

Dude, that's already cheaper than anywhere else you're going to find them online or at a LFS. He's probably going to spend at least that on live foods for the babies before he ships them.

marinebio_guy
Sep 20th, 2007, 08:01pm
At that price I'm just about breacking even. If you can find someone selling them for cheaper I will beat there price. But I dought you could even find a wild caught animal cheaper than that unless you catch it yourself, although the permit to do so would cost more than $50. If you pick it up from me in the L.A. area I might be able to go down to $35 total, but that would only be for hatchlings.

Nancy
Sep 20th, 2007, 09:25pm
Actually, I think one of the problems we're having as octopus keepers is that our breeders are selling their tank-bred octopuses for far too little money. I'd like to see octopuses go for twice as much. People like marinebio_guy put a lot of time and money into the breeding project and then sell for little or no profit. There is little reason to do it again or for others to get interested in breeding.

We watched Octopets go under, after selling their little bimacs for very little.

Just go to an LFS and price the fish and corals to see what a bargain an octopus is.

Nancy

sindas
Sep 20th, 2007, 10:12pm
yeah, all of us know as buyers it's tough to spend very much money on stuff, but you gotta think of how much the person is spending just to breed them, let alone keep the babies until there sold.

DHyslop
Sep 20th, 2007, 11:17pm
Besides, $45 + ~ $50-60 for shipping is nothing. Over my octopus' lifespan I've spent twice that in crabs. When my cuttlefish were young I was spending nearly that much for food every two weeks. This hobby is not cheap, and if you can't manage a hundred bucks for the octopus I doubt you can afford everything you need to give it a good home.

Dan

cuttlegirl

Having raised and bred S. bandensis, I know that $40 is not even breaking even... I would be willing to pay more for a captive bred animal, that way I would know it's origin and age. DHyslop is also correct about spending more on food than on the original animal. Keeping a cephalopod is an on-going expense.

marinebio_guy
Oct 2nd, 2007, 12:35am
For people interested in my bimacs currently I'm feeding them small snails and hermit crabs, they will also eat small ghost shrimp. It is best to keep them in a small container at first such as the mesh breeding baskets that you can hang from the side of your tank until they are 2 inches or larger so that it's easier to feed and observe them.

Bigpapa
Oct 2nd, 2007, 08:41am
Right now I have a small critter cage to put inside the tank, is this ok or should I go with the net? about how large are they or can you post a photo? I am guessing that if they can take small snails and hermits they are about the size of a dime?

marinebio_guy
Oct 2nd, 2007, 12:21pm
Right now they are between the size of a nickel and quarter. A critter cage is a little iffy as they might be able to crawl out through the top vents. The good thing about the mesh breeders is that sense they hang from the top of the tank the top of the net is out of the water and therefor inhibits the octo's from crawling out. It's also good to lower the water level of your tank a little so there is about 2 inches of air space from the top of the water and the top of the breeder net.

Rob,
Tom often offers them on his site and is a respectable, licenses collector. I believe Drakanorn bought his from him.

Oh good, I didnt mean to sound doubtful about it, was more that I have now found 3 in the last couple days when I had not been able to find any prior to that.-sry if that was how my "sheesh" may have come across, was not meant to be negative.

What a horses rear... I have been emailing him because on his website he only charges a straight up $30 for Briareus and just last week he told me he hadn't seen any for 6 weeks. So I guess he would rather sell to the highest bidder... bah!

I just won a Briareus on Ebay this past Saturday from Dana and Monday he responded with "I lost the little guy in a big tank, have to find him, sorry for the delay". I responded with "I just want my money back" because chances are it escaped to its death. I haven't heard from him since.
