They may indeed be invalid file types but I'll have a look. monty Oct 29th, 2006, 12:59pm Well, with those lights, it's good you have moonlights, because at night is the only time you'll ever see your octo. Water temperature will also be a big issue. Except that with blue lights, although it looks to humans like night time, to a blue-sensitive visual system like an octopus's, it will probably look like day-time even when the blue LEDs are on. If you want an octo to think it's dark, but you want enough light that you can see it, the red end of the spectrum is the place to be. alien4fish Oct 29th, 2006, 12:59pm ok sending now alien4fish Oct 29th, 2006, 01:01pm  LOL monty my A.D.D. is kickin in big time LOL:lol: alien4fish Oct 29th, 2006, 01:02pm ok Tony, let me see if i can those pix alien4fish Oct 29th, 2006, 01:15pm Except that with blue lights, although it looks to humans like night time, to a blue-sensitive visual system like an octopus's, it will probably look like day-time even when the blue LEDs are on. Thanks Monty:wink: i will have to look into red leds ........any idea on intensity? alien4fish Oct 29th, 2006, 01:17pm Oh Tony i started a thread for the so if you wanted to move the pix from this one to the i started .................... monty Oct 29th, 2006, 01:22pm Thanks Monty:wink: i will have to look into red leds ........any idea on intensity? I'd recommend putting them on a dimmer, so you can adjust to whatever makes your octo the most comfortable. If you have a choice, go for the lower frequency (= longer wavelength), since that'll tend to be things that your eyes respond better to, and the octo's will respond less to. I'm not sure about absolute intensity-- first off, because this is mostly theory more than experience, but also since it probably depends a lot on the shape of your tank and the stuff in it. Akyu got a red LED flashlight, and just used that with the lights off, although I think that was bright enough that her octo reacted to it somewhat, from what I remember. alien4fish Oct 29th, 2006, 02:02pm yes ..... i see your point, so in contrast to the kelvin rating with mh the lower mcd 's(26000 for example is the highest,) to start then work my down the spectrum( or mcd's if you will) to get the right lighting"comfort level" for the ceph. Very interesting indeed ...... now how that would look to the human eye is something that would be another issue. something to deff. look into and try Indiana OCHO Oct 31st, 2006, 03:58pm I have looked online and can not find a Pet Palace in Lancaster PA. Do you have a number for them? I will keep looking. Thanks for the info. DHyslop Oct 31st, 2006, 04:26pm www.thatpetplace.com Indiana OCHO Oct 31st, 2006, 05:14pm Thanks. They don't have any in right now but will call me if they get some. If anyone knows of any Bimac's available right now, I would sure love to know about it. I have called every dealer on the ceflapod page. The second graders are really excited and I can't come up with an octo. Marine Bio Guy's are not ready yet, but I hope to get one of his when they are ready. Anyway, thanks to everyone for their help. Nancy Nov 5th, 2006, 02:28am Danthemarineman has octopuses for sale - they are very young and we believe they are O. mercatoris, a dwarf octo. You can contact him by email at this address: Dansanchez11@msn.com Nancy Danthemarineman Nov 6th, 2006, 12:51am Thanks Nancy!!! Nancy Nov 9th, 2006, 01:34am We now have identified the species that danthemarineman is selling: it's O. mercatoris, a dwarf species (which is what we thought it was). Dan says these little octos are seasonal and he won't have them around too much longer - so you might want to order soon. He says he might still have a few around for Christmas. You can contact him by email at this address: Dansanchez11@msn.com Nancy Nancy Nov 10th, 2006, 02:38am Just a reminder that zyan_silver has bimacs which he raised as a school project. He writes: "Hi Nancy, is there a place on this website to let people know that I have bimacs for sale? My senior project is ending in 2 months and I have quite a few little critters (80) that I need to find homes for. I plan to keep a few to see if I can get them to adulthood. " He's near the Oregon/California border, on the coast. That's a lot of little bimacs - the project must have been a success! Nancy dutchcourage Nov 10th, 2006, 03:41am What is he charging for these little guys and about what size are they?I might have a freind that is intrested. Thanks derek11 Nov 14th, 2006, 09:44pm aquarium concepts in hayward ca has an octo right now. i went to take a look today. it is red and the mantle was about half the size of my thumb. they could not tell me anything more about it. i asked where the shipment came from but they said they couldnt say. im thinking its a pygmy species. they wanted 29.99 marineboy Nov 14th, 2006, 11:38pm hey guys, for some strange reason i can not delete my post I had back there about maybe sending ppl a bimac so can you PLEASE stop messaging me because I can not get you one ok! I guess I brought this upon myself....sry every1 who had there hopes up on me but I am not a commercial buisness and I like nature where it is :) Note: I deleted your July 2 message - if there are others, PM me and I'll delete them for you. Nancy Zeus Zoso Nov 15th, 2006, 12:59am I got dem Bimacs! DrBatty Nov 15th, 2006, 02:09am I saw an o. mercatoris [I think...] at Aquarium Concepts in Hayward, CA today! Really cute and very healthy. They're asking $29 for it, I think. It would be quite a steal if you're local.... Phuntoon Nov 15th, 2006, 11:36am Over on nano-reef.com in their classified, some guy has about 100 3 month old bimacs in the Rancho Palos Verdes, CA area. I believe thats near L.A. The post is here: http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=101770 I saw that little Octo at aquarium concepts and it sure looks happy in that empty critter keeper in the reef tank with no place to hide. caz2022 Nov 15th, 2006, 05:18pm Anyone looking for the ever popular "Atlantic octopus" in western New York? If so, Pets Plus in Lockport has one availible. He's been there for about two weeks. Poor guy doesn't look too happy in his little critter keeper. If divorces wern't so expensive, which would definitely be in my immediate future,I'd go get him myself. Brock Fluharty Nov 15th, 2006, 06:40pm That's a shame marine boy, but i'm sure everyone understands. Seems like several people have CB bimacs right now that need homes anyway though. If I were you, i'd get one for yourself (after your tank is stable) and keep it a hobby. Trying to make businesses out of hobbies ruins the fun. Brock Fluharty Nov 15th, 2006, 06:41pm oh, and Phuntoon, sounds like Zeus Zoso on these forums. He's been trying to find homes for his uncles bimacs. Animal Mother Nov 15th, 2006, 06:47pm There would be Bimacs out the yang after I spent my money on a nocturnal dwarf. Not that Einy isn't cool. Our schedules are just conflicting. Brock Fluharty Nov 15th, 2006, 06:51pm Ahahaha...just an excuse to get another tank! ;) Danthemarineman Nov 16th, 2006, 01:56am I just found a bunch of eggs in my tank. What do i do? Nancy Nov 16th, 2006, 02:10am The dwarfs that you sell lay large eggs and the young should be fairly easy to raise, if you can get food. Mysid shrimp and amphipods might be good starting food, then the ususal food that you feed the baby octos. Nancy dutchcourage Nov 17th, 2006, 01:24pm http://www.livemysidshrimp.com/ Found this today they list octopus for sale Picture looks like a bimac but who knows! DHyslop Nov 17th, 2006, 01:52pm The photograph of the octopus and the abalone were stolen from the old Octopets site. Therefore don't assume you'd get a bimac from these people. I'm skeptical about ordering from any site that doesn't have any information other than a "pay" button. Dan Danthemarineman Nov 18th, 2006, 11:00am Should i seperate the eggs from the other octos?? Also i found two of the octos i was about to ship had a large white spot/ball on his mantle right above the two dark spots. Are these pregnate females?? I put them back in the tank??? Nancy Nov 19th, 2006, 03:42pm Yes, you might want to separate them. Some people might want to buy eggs instead of octopuses, too. They'd need small food like mysid shrimp, copepods or amphipods. Nancy cr3w66 Nov 28th, 2006, 03:41pm Hi all - I'm looking for a young Joubini or Mercatoris, perhaps even a Briarieus. My Briarieus recently died (old age and/or stress), and I'm looking to fill the void - NOT replace of course! I've contacted several internet sites only to be told that their species are wild caught and most likely a year old already... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Animal Mother Nov 28th, 2006, 06:04pm I would suggest reading the posts before yours... Indiana OCHO Nov 28th, 2006, 06:13pm Can you use brine shrimp for newly hatched octos? I am just wondering since no one has mentioned them and they are so easy to rear. Animal Mother Nov 28th, 2006, 06:29pm I imagine they would eat them, but brine aren't very nutritious unless they are freshly hatched. I bet it would help keep the babies from eating each other though. marinebio_guy Nov 28th, 2006, 07:41pm You might be able to get away with adult brine shrimp of the first week, but after that the brine shrimp are too small and as stated above not nutritious enough. beastmaster1 Dec 10th, 2006, 09:31pm I'll be the first to post here: Fish Supply is receiving a limited supply of octopuses - I believe they're mostly from Indonesia. They're known for doing a good job with shipping. Just read about someone reporting an octo from Foster and Smith, and it arrived in good shape. Some places may still have bimacs. Nancy how much do they cost at this time? and are there any males avail? beastmaster1 Dec 10th, 2006, 09:37pm I have access to tons of bimac's where I live. I am shipping one to Dan hopefully in the next couple days. I do not run a buisness although my dad wants me to but I can do side deals with people if I feel they're trusted. I posted some pics of bimacs earlier and If your interested I can sell em cheap to you. Possibly free as long as you pay shipping. I don't know if thats considered worthy for this thread and I won't take it personaly nancy if you delete this. Animal Mother Dec 10th, 2006, 10:26pm BeastMaster1, it's easier to get caught up on current availability if you start with the last page and work your way back. Nancy Dec 11th, 2006, 01:14am Bimacs are still available from zyan silver. Fish Supply is only selling from the store, not shipping anymore. Good luck! Dan Goodwin9 Dec 31st, 2006, 06:32pm divertom.com has pigmy octopus for $30.00 on his website. tywtly Jan 4th, 2007, 07:21pm Well, my dad recently came to the conclusion that I didn't need an octo tank, so in a couple years, (when I'm old enough to get a paying job and buy everything myself) I'll check again and try to get a merc then.....or maybe something bigger..... bobster156 Jan 5th, 2007, 11:06am Hi, I am wandering if anyone know where i could get hold of a captive bread bimac baby on behalf of Sparsholt college in the UK. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bobby Danthemarineman Jan 7th, 2007, 07:46pm Hey guys! I did so well with the octopi I was getting from the live rock company I work at. I have decided to start buying them from a local guy and I should have them all year around. They are O.mercatoris. I live only twenty minutes away from mote marine and I plan to attend the Tonmo Convention thats coming up! I can take orders and bring them to the convention. Also I can ship them all over the country with DHL over night shipping for a 50% discount. Write me a pm if you are interested or you can e-mail me at dansanchez11@msn.com. Thanks!!! Dan cthulhu77 Jan 7th, 2007, 11:05pm I think that is great, but surely a part of the proceeds should go to the website here? Just a thought... dwhatley Jan 8th, 2007, 10:22pm Ken at www.sealifeflorida.com has joubini at a very reasonable price for anyone wanting to try a dwarf. I am the webmaster for his site and reserved one when he told me he had them. Neal is making an Octo safe cover for our 8 gallon now ;>). Brock Fluharty Jan 8th, 2007, 10:28pm They are probably mercatoris. dwhatley Jan 8th, 2007, 11:54pm Brock, That is what I told him (and explained it would be better if they were) but he has seen the eggs in prior years - they are seasonal in the Keys - and is convinced they are joubini. How is your little guy doing? Is the bimac any more social? I finally got to SEE my Briareus (I think) out once and make a mad (no ink) dash once but I still don't know what he is eating for sure. Danthemarineman Jan 9th, 2007, 12:02pm I looked at the pics on his websight and they are the the same kind of octo that i get. I bet that they are o.mercatoris. derek11 Jan 9th, 2007, 03:16pm lucky goldfish in san jose Ca has a very nice aculeatus. And get this they are selling him for only 40.00 dollars. I feel ripped off becuase i bought mine for 65 dollars a few months ago. I talked with the guy at the store and he said they will hopefully be getting them often. They are a wholesale to the public store so that is probobaly why they are cheap. If anyone is interested the phone number is 408-436-1464. Let me know if someone picks him up if hes still there in 2 weeks i might have to take him. Nancy Jan 18th, 2007, 01:58am Marinebio_guy is raising more bimacs - they should be ready to ship in about two months. Nancy dwhatley Jan 18th, 2007, 02:18am NEXT year I will have a chiller! It will be soooo nice to have a diurnal critter! zyan silver Jan 20th, 2007, 02:30am i still have about 50 bimacs. they are 5 months old. i just presented my senior project ( raising these octos) to the school as the semester is ending next week. i'm still eager to find good homes for them. it is amazing to watch 15 bmacs interact in an aquarium particularly at feeding time. i thought there were only 5or 6 in this one tank but when i went to turn on the room lights last nite i counted 15 prowling around on the glass. i'll be interested to see if i can captive breed them as they come to the end of their life-in another year. but 50 is a bit too many too handle. zyan dwhatley Jan 20th, 2007, 02:48am Zyan, You mentioned that you were using older technology with this project. What temperature are your tanks and how are you keeping the temperature constant (or is Oregon ALWAYS cold ;>) marineboy Jan 22nd, 2007, 11:22pm So I have been thinking about it and I guess I will still sell bimacs to people as long as you pick it up. Meaning if you live in the southern California area, you should definetley contact me if you are interested but shipping to anywhere is out of the question. I can get bimacs easily this time of year so if your local just pm me please because I would be happy to sell one to you. zyan silver Jan 23rd, 2007, 12:17am D, the temp fluctuates between 54 and 68 deg. but slowly. i have 500 gallon sophisticated system in my garage for raising the bimacs.it has monster euro-reef skimmer, and chiller. only need to run chiller in the warm summer here. it never gets hot and the garage is naturally cool. i had 125 babies . 25 died over the first 2 mo. haven't lost any since. they were separated by 1-2 wk of age until they were 4 mo. old. now the are in groups of 10-15 per 100 or so gallons . not escape proof but none have been inclined to leave. there is ample food and hiding places . i have several tanks at room temp indoors and at school i maintain a few too. some have old school technology with UG and cannister filters. all seem happy. obviously in the wild there would be a 99% mortality, and i definitely have had some runts . the size varies thru a continuum, in fact i had 2 that never appreciably grew in 4.5 mo until they succumbed. now however even though there is a little roughhousing between siblings( isnt that normal-remember when....) i dont see any serious aggression. i just hope there are a few folks out there who would like to have a memorable pet so i can enjoy the 3 or 4 that i envisioned being capable of raising ( not 100!) i'm happy to ship anywhere. zy dwhatley Jan 23rd, 2007, 02:40am Zyan, Like others, we want one in the worst way but octos and adominalis won't work and that is the only tank I have I keep at 68. Neal keeps looking at chillers on eBay ;>). I have a fish tank (my only tank that has more or less normal fish) in a well cycled 45 with 10 gallon sump/fuge whos inhabitence can be relocated to a 30 that is equally cycled and the 45 is easily suited to make an almost holeless lid but my fans won't keep it cool enough (especially enclosed). I am recycling (mini cycle I hope - so far so good) a 15 gallon hex that was infested with brissle worms and we are going to install a water cooler in-tank chiller to eliminate the fans for it (hopefully to become a cuttle tank) but the chiller would be doing well to hit 68 on the cool end. We keep looking for a way to get a diural critter as these 4:00 AM visitations with a lot of no shows are frustrating ;>). Can you tell the males from the females at all? It looks so easy in the photos but, until JoeJoe died, I really never go a good look at his tentacles. Please let the forum know if you opt to send all your extras to the pet shops. In the meantime, we will keep looking for a way to cool the 45. Thanks for the posts. lockburn Jan 23rd, 2007, 09:41pm Zyan, your setup seems pretty amazing! Do you happen to have any photos, or a Flickr album, etc? The '15 octopuses crawling on the glass' seems like a great pic. Thanks! corw314 Jan 23rd, 2007, 10:21pm I would love to see some pics! clownfish Feb 19th, 2007, 11:12pm http://www.tropicalfishoutlet.com/InvertSubCategory.asp?InvertCategoryID=3 is selling octopus Mimicus Feb 22nd, 2007, 03:37pm So I have been thinking about it and I guess I will still sell bimacs to people as long as you pick it up. Does anyone have a bimac for sale? tigersbreath Feb 24th, 2007, 05:21pm sealifeinc.net also known as "Old Diver" on ebay has dwarf octopi. I just got 4 yesterday and they are all complete ond he also sent one complete with eggs. Layton Mimicus Mar 8th, 2007, 08:03pm I got a dwarf of eBay for my 30 gal Hex next to my O.aculeatus tank. The dwarf they sent was O.mercatoris (though it was sold as Joubini). He's happily eating small crabs and shrimp and seems healthy. A red LED helps make him observable at night time (the blue "moonlight simulator" was too bright and he wouldn't come out). Though they're small and nocturnal, they are interesting as well. 91lxstang Mar 9th, 2007, 08:35pm i had no idea you could buy live animals off ebay...... Hangnail Mar 20th, 2007, 11:16pm I've been looking all over the internet for a Bimac. Sure, I found them, but everyone is "out of stock" I clicked every link on the source page but no dice there. I finally found one and I ordered it, just to find out today that it didn't ship and now the website says "out of stock" again. Looks like someone beat me to it. All I can find is dwarfs/pigmy's. Can anyone help me find a bimac? With all the people breeding them I would have thought it would be easier to find. Can someone direct me to a current source? My tank has been all duct-taped up and it looks so lonely with no little buddy in there :( inkysquid12 Mar 21st, 2007, 11:43pm For anyone in the U.K, AquaticsFanatics has some vague listing on Californian and Banded Octopus, 'coming soon'. http://www.aquaticsfanatics.com/products.php?sub=116&man=64&type=&page=1 zyan silver Mar 22nd, 2007, 03:05am i still have bimacs. just counted them 41! left. had 100 babies survived. shipped 50 or so around the country. they're still cute. zy Nebx Mar 22nd, 2007, 03:19am how much are they? corw314 Mar 22nd, 2007, 07:07am Hey Zyan, How big are your babies now? Spike's mantle is about 3" with an arm length of about 8 inches. keir richardson Mar 22nd, 2007, 10:40am :welcome: :welcome: I just wanted to let you all know that while I was looking at setting up an aggressive species tank I stopped by That Pet Place in Lancaster Pennsylvania (its about 40 minutes north of me) and they DO sell octos. However, when I was there last (about 1 month ago) the octo that they had there was classified as "common brown octopus"... which kind of made me laugh since there is nothing "common" or "brown" about most octos. Also, The Hidden Reef that was mentioned earlier that is located in downtown Philly recently burned to the ground in some sort of freak fire accident. I hear that they are rebuilding and will be open for business again, though I am not sure when that is going to be. I'll try to see what I can find out. keir richardson Mar 22nd, 2007, 10:50am the hidden reef was located in northeast philly not downtown.they have relocated to bristol pa. area in amuch larger building.I stopped by a couple weeks ago and the large fish room area was not yet operational.Isee the new place as a mini That pet place and I cant wait for the fish room to be completed as it was the best fish store in philly before the fire but now it looks to be bigger and better. frye Mar 29th, 2007, 12:49am I've been reading up on octopus and preparing myself a tank for a few months now. $1000 so far and I haven't got a living thing yet. ;) Anyhow, the shop that I deal with rarely gets them in. The fish market across the street gets them in as well and the owner told me that they sell them to my shop. Is there a good reason for not making a deal with the fish market to get an octopus? And one more question... has anyone ever put 2 or 3 babys in a tank at the same time? I know that they are solitary, but I would love to actually have a breeding pair, even if I had to drop another grand for a spare tank. wpatrick Apr 5th, 2007, 08:10pm I have two tanks a 240 And I am looking for a big Octo and a 50 Little Octo. So if anybody has any for sale let me know. Big Octo are hard to find. tywtly Apr 10th, 2007, 09:33pm Ok, I didn't look through any of the other pages of this topic, so sorry if this has already been asked, but will anyone have any young bimacs in about 4-6 months that they would sell me for cheap? Thanks... monty Apr 10th, 2007, 10:12pm Zyan Silver said recently that his dad is going to keep up his bimac breeding project when he's off at school. http://www.tonmo.com/forums/showthread.php?p=91598#post91598 It doesn't sound like he knows the timetable for availability, though... bwidner Apr 12th, 2007, 07:12pm didnt read all 29 pages but southwest reef co. gets them on occasion, and will order anything for you on demand. He has the knowledge and expertise for anything I have even seen him raise a black tipped reef shark in his old store where he had a 1000 gallon pond for it! At one point he had a bimac for about 3 months before someone bought it and he regularly would play with it! shipposhack Apr 14th, 2007, 11:28pm I'm purchasing my tank on friday, so I expect to need an octopus by August. Are they still easy to get then, or is spring a better time? zombie Apr 28th, 2007, 03:23am Does anybody have a small common or BiMac for sale? shipposhack Apr 28th, 2007, 03:31pm They aren't like the computer, you dont capitalize the b and m ^.^ monty Apr 28th, 2007, 03:39pm They aren't like the computer, you dont capitalize the b and m ^.^ Nancy Apr 28th, 2007, 04:04pm Looks like the summer will be a better time to buy than right now. I don't know much but i know how to answer that question. for i bimac you need a 50 gallon or larger. for a vulgaris i'm not sure but well over 100 gallons. I don't think you need a uv sterilizer, but it would probably be good to prevent infection. chillers are expensive, but important for such creatures. when i first looked at the prices i thought to myself "360 dollars for this?" i don't know if it's best but heres a link to the kind i'm thinking of getting. http://www.evendorz.com/products.asp?stid=6249&product_id=260114998908 I'm still learining too, so don't take my advice too seriously, and if anyone sees anything wrong with my advice please tell me. monty May 6th, 2007, 04:45pm Looking for some advice on how to set up a tank for a bimac and also one for a vulgaris. tank size? type of chiller? type of filtration/skimmer? Any advice will be appreciated. for a bimac, there's an equipment list in the ceph care articles, although some of your questions are "could go either way" with respect to that, but these sorts of things are discussed a lot in older posts: forum search is your friend! Relatively few people have been keeping vulgaris around TONMO because they need such huge tanks, but there's some discussion of them as well in old posts... |
