View Full Version : Swamped by Google
Architeuthoceras Mar 5th, 2006, 01:46pm what is going on in the UK today (and yesterday)? I've had more hits on my site today than ever, folks googling "Fossil Cephalopods", my bandwidth is running low.
I had this on another thread yesterday, moved it to a new thread today because it is happening again.
Quite an upsurge in hits, makes me think some TV show or something has spawned it. Any Ideas ?
tonmo Mar 5th, 2006, 02:18pm Hmm, can't say I'm noticing the same thing; mostly because I'm swamped with searches for colossal squid!

Its all relative Tony, I am used to seeing 10 hits a day, you probably see that many in a minute 8-) When I see 50 hits in a day (57 yesterday and 41 today) somethings up.
Phil Mar 5th, 2006, 09:07pm Despite being one of our few UK fossily types, I'm afraid I have no explanation Kevin. There have been no TV shows on this week relating to prehistoric marine faunas as far as I know. Although I posted a question about Endoceras on a UK-based science site a couple of days ago, I did not give a link to your site in my question. I've had a look at your site twice this week (I think) so can barely held responsible for this upsurge in traffic. Still, all publicity is good publicity I'd imagine!
It's probably just a completely random thing. Maybe there's a few college dissertations on the way.
Having said that, just you wait, a familiar sounding documentary about ammonoids may yet mysteriously appear on BBC2 in 6 months time...

Phil, is this a hypothetical explanation, wishful thinking, a premonition, or do you have some inside information
Hits are back down today, must have been a weekend thing.
Phil Mar 6th, 2006, 12:38pm Phil, is this a hypothetical explanation, wishful thinking, a premonition, or do you have some inside information
.
Er, no, purely hypothetical. I made it up I'm afraid.
I really shouldn't try and be witty after coming back after a night out on the lash. Seven pints of lager and a keyboard rarely mix well together!
Tintenfisch Mar 6th, 2006, 03:07pm Yeah, the old forehead prong gets a bit shaky, eh, Phil.
Phil Mar 6th, 2006, 04:51pm Yeah, the old forehead prong gets a bit shaky, eh, Phil.
It does indeed, Kat. I use my Palaeo-Prong in conjunction with my special TONMO moderator keyboard to help me find answers.
Architeuthoceras Mar 6th, 2006, 11:32pm Looks like youve got 2 or 3 dead keys on that keyboard Phil  I sure do enjoy pressing those Goo glee keys though
neuropteris Mar 7th, 2006, 08:42am Good Lord Phil - 7 pints of lager and you can still type!:notworth: They obviously make better palaeo prongs down your way than up here.
Not that I need any liquid assistance in triggering the old finger dyslexia - I once managed to fax a customer asking for his bonking details instead of his banking details.
fossilkid25 Mar 7th, 2006, 09:01am hey Architeuthoceras
i get about 400 hits or more on fossils galore my website.
Tintenfisch Mar 7th, 2006, 06:49pm :roflmao: , both to Phil and neuropteris.
Phil Mar 7th, 2006, 07:55pm Not that I need any liquid assistance in triggering the old finger dyslexia - I once managed to fax a customer asking for his bonking details instead of his banking details.
:lol: I hope he didn't reply with details! I know banks do like to keep your personal details, but really....
That reminds me of the time when I confused two phone numbers on a couple of post-it notes and successfully managed to fax the entire office sandwich order off to Maidstone Police Custody. Ooops.
Tintenfisch Mar 7th, 2006, 09:50pm :roflmao: again...
Must watch this thread more often.
bigGdelta Mar 8th, 2006, 05:50am Suddenly this thread seems much more interesting. so tell me about the boinking give lots of details.....heh
neuropteris Mar 8th, 2006, 07:41am Luckily my customer was Turkish and didn't understand, unluckily the MD who saw the fax did!
Also have the occasional problem with language from my non english speaking customers. One of my favourite tales is of a Spanish lady called Maria
Neuropteris : "hello Maria how are you"
Maria : " ok but I am constipated"
Neuropteris "your constipated?!? (thinks she must have got this wrong) What are your symptoms?"
Maria : " my nose is blocked and I cannot breath"
Neuropteris : "thats not constipation Maria"
Maria : " what is constipation?"
Neuropteris explains constipation
Maria : "I WILL NEVER SAY THAT AGAIN!"
In case you hadn't guessed she meant congested.
Tintenfisch Mar 8th, 2006, 02:38pm Heh, sounds like a few of the papers I marked last semester... some of my favorite sentences were:
‘… the organic maters decomposed were decomposed by bacterial.’ [sic]
‘Worms are more suited to living in polluted and silly water than any other organisms.’
‘So some insects are not tolerant of pollution whereas others are not.’
‘Vegetation coverage was minimal, with lots of sunlight shinnying through onto the stream.’
‘Quadrat counts are used extensively on plants, because they rarely run away when being counted.’
‘There are lots of methods have been used for the study of distribution of species in the universe.’
‘The methods were used, was applied to compute the snails and then make some statistics to analysis the data.’
:hmm:
sorseress Mar 8th, 2006, 07:56pm So that kind of stuff happens Kiwi-land too?
DHyslop Mar 8th, 2006, 08:23pm Gawd, it sounds like my Geo 210 class...
One of the grad students gave a geology outreach presentation to a group of kindergartners a couple weeks ago. He came out of it telling us that they're smarter than the freshmen are.
