View Full Version : Ceph's in Video Games
Octomatt May 23rd, 2003, 01:42pm Not sure how many video game nuts frequent this site, but I thought I'd mention the coolest ceph I've ever seen in a video game and see if anyone else has any other VG ceph references.
For the Playstation 1 and 2, the Soul Reaver (legacy of Kain) games feature a Cthuluesque creature that lurks in the depths of Nosgoth and advises the game's hero, Raziel, through his trials and tribulations. The ceph is voiced by the same guy that did Frolo in Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame." Very creepy!
:cthulhu: Matt
Phil May 23rd, 2003, 02:15pm The recent PC game 'The Secret of the Nautilus' is supposed to have a giant squid. Quite right too; how could any game about Nemo not have one!
I have not played it (reviews are so-so) but it may be worth looking out for.
Fujisawas Sake May 31st, 2003, 05:13am In the Gamecube game "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker", you have to deal with rock-spitting octopus-like creatures called "Octoroks". Also, sometimes in your adventures sailing across the sea, you run into what are called "big octos", HUGE cephs that attack you.... Luckily, your little boat has a cannon....
And in "Enter the Matrix", there's a running firefight against metallic octo-like robotic killing machines nicknamed "Squiddies".
Come to think of it, there are a lot of cephs in video games... maybe I should dust off my old collection and report back later...
Sushi and Sake,
John
Fujisawas Sake May 31st, 2003, 05:16am Whoa! Forgot....
In the game "Final Fantasy 6", there's an octopus who harasses you every so often, making wierd comments and attacking your party. I think his name is Ultros....
Sushi and Sake,
John
tonmo May 31st, 2003, 07:53am Just about every Mario Bros. title on every Nintendo system has at least a few squid in them, in the underwater levels. In fact, the latest GameCube Mario (Mario Sunshine) features a battle with a giant squid as a level-ending boss. You have to pull each tentacle off, dodge, shoot, pull another off, that kind of thing.
The Donkey Kong titles on Super Nintendo (SNES) have octopuses -- one of them even has blue rings in the later levels!
cthulhu77 May 31st, 2003, 09:56am Oh! now you've done it Tony! You mentioned blue rings !!!! Prepare for all the warning labels they are going to have to put on that video game box!
"DANGER!, game may contain blue ring octopuses, whose venom is highly neurotoxic and can be fatal, before purchasing this game, read at least 47 articles on how dangerous these animals are, purchase a HAZMAT suit, learn CPR, and be able to pilot small planes*."
*in case of bite, victim must be transported from video game to poison control center within 10 minutes
Hehe...

Clem Aug 24th, 2003, 02:17pm Avast All,
Discovery.com has a little Flash "game" in which the player rides a submersible below New Zealand's waters in search of Architeuthis. (http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/giantsquid/meet/meet.html) (I placed "game" in quotes because, well, it doesn't involve much play or user input, and feels more like a benign deep-sea kidnapping, but oh well.)
Meanwhile, Capcom's Megaman XZ: The Maverick Hunters features a character named Squid Adler:http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:U0z5KhIhSb0C:mmevolve.tripo d.com/images/x5_squid.gif
Someone really needs to design a sophisticated, compelling game with a ceph as the protagonist. Perhaps the "game glove" interface hardware could finally be put to full use...fingers for arms, thumbs for tentacles...steal this idea, please.
Clem
Rockthis11 Aug 24th, 2003, 03:01pm Also, in one of the megaman games 9not sure which one). There is a boss named Launch Octopus.
Fujisawas Sake Oct 6th, 2003, 06:50am Ceph sighting... sort of...
The game "Skies of Arcadia: Legends" has flying ceph-like creatures (like ammonites, actually) that attack your ship, not to mention a monstrous beastie (an "arcwhale").
John
lotus101 Oct 6th, 2003, 07:29pm You can't forget Sonic the Hegdehog! In oil ocean theres "octus".
I loved those games and I still do!
Fujisawas Sake Oct 16th, 2003, 06:56pm Whoa! More squid sightings in the sky pirate adventure game "Skies of Arcadia: Legends": There's a giant (I mean, HUGE) flying squid creature that patrols the southern skies. It attacks using arms and the magical "black ink' attack.
Sushi and Sake
John
Clem Oct 18th, 2003, 02:16am John,
What's the giant squid in "Red Alert" all about?
:|
Clem
Fujisawas Sake Oct 18th, 2003, 04:46am You mean "Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2"? Well, the Soviet Psychic scientist Yuri creates mind control devices that control giant squid which attack ships, divers, and the like. The best defense against them, provided you are playing "Allied Forces", is to use dolphins. If you are playing Soviets, use the squid to patrol waterways and sieze ships.
Sushi and Borscht,
John
NickA5582 Oct 18th, 2003, 10:44pm I've got a cell phone game with a squid that floats in space and shoots at you.

DocidicusGigas Dec 12th, 2003, 08:06am In the Gamecube game "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker", you have to deal with rock-spitting octopus-like creatures called "Octoroks". Also, sometimes in your adventures sailing across the sea, you run into what are called "big octos", HUGE cephs that attack you.... Luckily, your little boat has a cannon....
In Nintendo 64 "Legend of Zelda, the Ocarina of time", (my friend Eddie and I call it LAZOOT) there are also Octoroks, possibly the most annoying creature in the game (you have to deflect their attacks back at them to kill them). There's also BigOcto, although he's sort of a demi-boss (and Eddie and I died thrice before we could beat him).
Clem Jan 19th, 2004, 11:03pm Say...
One of Cthulhu's minions has compiled a list of Atari 2600 cartridge games with cephs in them, which you can view if you click here (http://swifi.users.50megs.com/umbrage/hatecraft/cthari.html).

NickA5582 Jan 23rd, 2004, 10:24pm Three armed green squids wearing helmets taking over some planet.

Squid are on level 3+ (except for level 5, instead there is an "evil space magician from nebula 12")
Burstsovenergy24 Jan 23rd, 2004, 10:36pm Im sorry but that game was just too hard (for me :heee: ).

Its a fun game but I wish it had more levels. :(
tonmo Jan 30th, 2004, 10:29pm This one is just bizarre, but if you can get through to it, it's a pretty interesting racing game. Basically, you're a piece of sushi racing away from sushi bar patrons... or something. I swear I really don't know. But I was a severed tentacle and the music is funked.
EDIT: 2/23/04 - link removed due to complaint; adult material

NickA5582 Feb 9th, 2004, 07:54pm The Donkey Kong titles on Super Nintendo (SNES) have octopuses -- one of them even has blue rings in the later levels!
On one of the underwater levels I think there was a nautilus thing that chased you around.
Burstsovenergy24 Feb 9th, 2004, 07:59pm I remember that. :)
ant Feb 9th, 2004, 09:17pm has anyone ever beaten the tokidoki game.

NickA5582 Mar 13th, 2004, 07:57pm On "Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes" there is a boss named "Decoy Octopus", I just read it in the instruction manual thing.
um... Mar 13th, 2004, 07:59pm There's a big octopus in "Grim Fandango", if I remember correctly.
NickA5582 Mar 28th, 2004, 07:42pm In the Sims Makin Magic edition, make a kid and look at their interests. Under the alien section, there is a three armed octo.
Burstsovenergy24 Mar 28th, 2004, 09:01pm I wanna get that. :(
NickA5582 Apr 24th, 2004, 10:31am In "Diddy Kong Racing" for Nintendo 64, the third boss is a red octopus who drops ink and bubbles. :)
Fujisawas Sake May 1st, 2004, 05:23am New Ceph sighting!
"Super Mario Sunshine" : Our intrepid Italian plumber has to fight a giant Squid called "Bloober". The idea is to snap its mouth... er... siphon... er... What the hell is that thing?!?!?
Sushi and a 1Up mushroom,

NickA5582 Jun 2nd, 2004, 10:21pm New cthulhu game coming out.............

:cthulhu:
Burstsovenergy24 Jun 3rd, 2004, 12:22am Cool. I wish I had been at E3. :(
Fujisawas Sake Jun 3rd, 2004, 04:20am Yeah, heard about it from Penny-Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com). Hopefully it will be good, since I haven't seen a good ancient evil game since Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (http://www.eternaldarkness.com), a game which I think should get honorary Cthulhu Mythos-style status.
Sushi and The Elder Things,
John
NickA5582 Jun 21st, 2004, 02:28pm Found another from The Sims, under the "Aquarium Technichian" job, the last line in the job description is "just remember not to put the lobsters in with the octopus."
NickA5582 Jun 21st, 2004, 02:57pm And another.......
Nemo's Revenge (http://2flashgames.com/f/f-713.htm)
Tigerkatze_82 Jul 22nd, 2004, 04:32am I know two more games with cephs:
1) The oooold SEGAs "Ecco the dolphin" has an octopus in one of the first levels...
2) The gorgeous "MYST III - Exile" has a cuttlefish in "Edanna Age". It's red, electric and used in the game to produce energy...
TK :)
NickA5582 Oct 10th, 2004, 07:32pm In Halo: Combat Evolved, there are little things that jump onto you that slightly resemble very ugly squid.
Octomatt Nov 2nd, 2004, 03:21pm The last instalment of the Legacy of Kain (Playstation) series featured the same ceph-esque underworld overlord, but this time, YOU GET TO DO BATTLE WITH IT!
Octomush Nov 2nd, 2004, 03:35pm Also in Fable! One of the hardest bosses is a cracken! It looks like a muppet with tentacles... LOL
joel_ang Nov 2nd, 2004, 03:45pm You know at video arcades, theres a game called deep sea hunter or sth like that, one of the bosses is "kraken" an enormous giant octo and the last boss is a giant goblin shark.
Fujisawas Sake Jan 2nd, 2005, 09:31pm New one -
Disney and Square-Enixs' "Kingdom Hearts" - In the world of Atlantica, Sora becomes a mer-man with the tail of a dolphin, Goofy becomes a sea turtle, and Donald becomes sort of a mer-duck with the top half being a duck, and the bottom half being an octopus.
Oh, and yes, you do have to fight the Sea Witch Ursula, who is half-octo.
John
Swarvegorilla May 4th, 2005, 10:50pm Well in Capcom vs Marvel (sorta street fighter game.... arcade, dreamcast, xbox, ps2 etc) one of the unlockable characters is an octopus.
May not be a simulation or anything but theres something about wrapping Ken up and uh..... zapping him?
Anyway cool game, if the main repeating riff didn't scream "i'm gonna take you for a ride!!" I would put more money in though Capcom.
Fujisawas Sake May 5th, 2005, 06:33am New sighting!
As you know, I like to play the MMO City of Heroes... Well, some of my fellow superheroes have told me that there is a HUGE kraken that occasionally surfaces around Independence Port.
Read the Paragon City Times (http://www.cityofheroes.com/paragon_times.html), Nov 24 Issue for more information.
Sushi and Sake... and hold the Tako Yaki,
John
msamaki Jun 27th, 2005, 07:44pm some sightings i should add:
-you can fish up a squid in "harvest moon: friends of mineral town". and presumably you could in the earlier game "back to nature", (on which FoMT was based.) too.
-in "zoo tycoon: marine mania", you can get both GPOs and giant squids for your marine zoo.
-in "the sims: superstar" there is a reef tank with an octo in it.
-there is a kraken in age of mythology. it looks like a mix of squid, octopus and cuttlefish.
all i could think of for now...
sorry if i shouldn't have bumped the topic.
Octomatt Jul 31st, 2005, 02:41am I can't believe this thread is still active! Sweet!
chrono_war01 Jul 31st, 2005, 08:27am You know at video arcades, theres a game called deep sea hunter or sth like that, one of the bosses is "kraken" an enormous giant octo and the last boss is a giant goblin shark.
I believe that I've mentioned the whole game and is trying to find a PC version of it. The whole game concept was to shoot anything that could bite, sting and/or ram you. Kinda fun.
Still perfer C&C: Red alert 2 squids though.
Fujisawas Sake Jul 31st, 2005, 02:41pm City of Heroes Update!
I BEAT THE GIANT OCTO! A few days ago I joined a massive group of superheroes and sent the giant octopus, Lucca, packing. She's gone from Independence Port ... for the time being... but she'll be back.
Also, I saw a new video for a Nintendo GS game that makes you a sushi chef. You have to chop squid using the touch screen. Anyone hear about this game?
John

As a TONMO reader, it's a must.
(Don't you just love Google News alerts.)
sorseress Aug 29th, 2005, 08:40pm I think all of you have the signs and symptoms of misspent youth.
Squidman Aug 29th, 2005, 11:59pm Has anybody mentioned the Atari 2600 game "Dolphin" on this thread?
You play as a dolphin swimming away from a giant octopus, but if you eat a seagull, you can turn the tables and hunt that pesky beast!
Squidman Aug 30th, 2005, 12:10am Does anybody know about the video game "Ecco the Dolphin?" I have never played it, but I know that it is about a happy little dolphin swimming around the beautiful ocean blue, doing all kinds of happy things with your nice fishy friends.
Well, it appears the developers of "Ecco" are almost finished with the follow-up game. The title:JAWS: Unleashed
Evidently it's like "Ecco," but you are a 25-foot shark who gets to eat Ecco and all kinds of prey, like people and seals and boats.
But now the ceph part: You get to fight a giant squid. I haven't found an image of the squid yet, but I eagerly anticipate taking on the Kraken as a giant carcharias.
Cephkid Sep 3rd, 2005, 12:39pm Figured this is the right place to mention my dissapointment. "Call of C'thulhu" is no longer to be on computer. Only PS2 and X-box...
chrono_war01 Sep 3rd, 2005, 01:15pm Ah, C'thulhu would be disappionted by this.
Fujisawas Sake Sep 3rd, 2005, 02:57pm Talk about dissapointment, "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" has been pushed back until spring. I was looking forward to seeing the new Octaroks.
John
Ceph fan Sep 4th, 2005, 04:44pm in Coty of Heroes, an online game, there was this one map where once a day a giant octopus named Lusca would appear and everyone would have to gather ti kill her (and earn a badge in doing so).... yes i am a nerd lol
