View Full Version : Squid and Octopus spotting
monty Jan 20th, 2007, 07:19pm a student (http://gilly.stanford.edu/dannashulman.htm) in Dr. Gilly's lab (http://gilly.stanford.edu/) at Stanford has collected a list of ceph-related attire on a web page (http://www.stanford.edu/~joyshul/geekgear.html) devoted to the topic. Her main page (http://www.stanford.edu/~joyshul/home.html) may also be of interest. Amazing who you can find if you google for stuff like "cephalopodiatrist."

cuttlegirl Feb 16th, 2007, 12:18pm I don't know if this counts as a squid sighting, but last night I went to a play called "Muckle Man" by Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa. It was about a marine biologist in Newfoundland trying to capture a giant squid (how could I not go to this play???). Anyway, they had a little slide show (in the play the marine biologist was giving a lecture to potential donors) that had a picture of the live Architeuthis. They included lots of facts about the giant squid, some accurate, others not (eyes as large as New York City manhole covers...). The marine biologist in the play eventually finds a juvenile Architeuthis and it refuses to eat so he has to call two teuthologists in New Zealand "Breedlove and Roper."
Pretty good play, surprising ending. Oh, and the actor playing the marine biologist kind of looked like our Dr. SOS  . Oh, and the juvenile squid dies...

dwhatley Feb 16th, 2007, 02:35pm I had to see if it was playing in Atlanta (not yet) and found a great site that was used to promote the play. The last box on the first row is a "diary written by the main character (aka playwright)". If the blog doesn't look familiar, you have not read Steve O'Shea's bio!
Each block on the site references some internet site relating to undersea monsters.
http://www.themuckleman.com/?cell=a7
Amending this to say that only the TONE of the blog reminds me of Steve's Bio not the entire script!

cuttlegirl Apr 9th, 2007, 09:23pm I was just at a store in the dollar section and I saw a little toy kitchen set with plastic pans, pots, utensils and plates. It came with some food on the plates, a little lobster and a CUTTLEFISH!!! My four-year-old wanted to buy it so she could "rescue" the lobster and cuttlefish and let her dolls have them for pets. She eventually picked another toy (sea life set with shark, orca and octopus). The set was made in China.
We didn't get it, but maybe I should go back and get it for a Tonmocon door prize...

Taddea Tentakel May 8th, 2007, 03:37am "Hakodate in Hokkaido is apparently famous for its cuttlefish, so what better way to celebrate the Hakodate harbour festival than with a cuttlefish robot! Standing at a height of 2.2m, the robot uses air pressure to move its joints to do a little dance. What’s more is that the dance can be choreographed by using a cell phone. The robot was developed by the Future University in Hakodate, and cost them 4,850,000 yen (21,612/$41,169) to produce. Yup, 4,850,000 yen for a dancing robot squid.
