just watched a futurama episode on adult swim where Fry talked about the the story of the grasshopper and the octopus.

Was watching the Series 2 M*A*S*H episode 'Carry On, Hawkeye' a few days ago, where the whole unit gets the flu, and a harried Hawkeye quips, 'What I wouldn't give for an intelligent octopus!' ... had he only known... :wink:

I visited the Carnegie Museum of Natural History today. I haven't been there for years (I am not going to say how many...). Anyway, they still have the under-sea dioramas that I remember as a child.. Now I know why I always thought fossil cephalopods looked like this.

Those are absolutely fantastic images of the display at the Carnegie, Cuttlegirl. Thank you for posting them, they are by the far the best images of the dioramas there I've seen.

A very interesting depiction of an ammonoid with 24 nautiloid-like arms (!), and I love the blotchy paint job on the nautiloid. Most excellent. Would anyone happen to know which precise faunas are depicted here?

Great, now I am going to have to go back to the museum and actually read the signs...:grin: I went to the museum with my 8 year old and three year old, it was pretty much full speed through the exhibits. Next time I will go by myself!

On a Simpson's episode a few days ago Homer was explaining to Bart and Lisa about his past in The Be Sharps. There's a brief clip where the Cap'n and a giant pink squid are in a fist fight on the deck of his boat. The radio is on, and suddenly a Be Sharps song comes on and they stop fighting and reconcile. It was a cute.

Yesterday on a show called X-Play, there were some good Cthulhu references. They had the First Annual H.P. Lovecraft Spelling Bee. It was great! :smile:

I just flipped to Cartoon Network waiting for the Daily Show to come on, and they had an episode of I.M. Weasel and I.R. Baboon (or whatever the title of the show with those characters is)-- I tuned in late, but they were "piloting" a whale around, and their whale is attacked by a giant squid. After the squid inks weasel in his diving suit, it becomes clear that the whale and squid are in love, and they have a wedding...

I saw the most amazing squid featuring commercial yesterday. I was watching music videos on the net through Yahoo!'s Launch site. They've be advertising pretty heavily for Yahoo! Music Unlimited (pay for songs) which they feature cool little pixelated cartoons of artists in a dance sequence in various settings. Well this on was new to me. It was Pharrel, on the back of a yacht singing some song with back up dancers. Suddenly a giant squid comes up out of the water and empties the boat into its mouth (complete with human like teeth and tongue i think). The music keeps going, the squid thinks for a second, and then spits Pharrel back out on to the boat and he keeps rapping. Then the squid puts up four arms behind the boat as back-up dancers. Then the squid dances. Hilarious! Loved it!

Wowie, I was just about to post that! Caught it on TV yesterday -- well, the last part, anyway. One of two lab-coated guys says, "If we don't [do something or other that I can't remember], then Bob here will eat a squid." Cut to Bob -- mauled by a giant tentacle (arm?) lashing out of a tank -- yelling, "You said calamari!". Other guy responds, "Well, it is calamari...."

They're not cephs, but its a very attractive polished limestone from Pakistan. We have a number of switchplates made out of it from another vendor and they're absolutely beautiful. A new series of this very odd cartoon series starts on cable TV here in Australia next week - in the promo the annoying little girl who dresses in pink is a pink octopus in one scene.

Nickelodean has these funny things people can make on their web page - sort of an avatar - and they show some on the TV station. One looked like an octopus with too many bulldogs in its family.

There's shareware games out there for the Mac and PC called Mystery Files: Huntsville and Mystery Files: Prime Suspects. Both of these are kind of a photo Where's Waldo type of game where they list objects and you have to find them. In both games in several locations, octopuses, squids and nautilus shells are featured.

I saw a guy called Squidflakes- a ex-tonmo member on a ..erm.."tentacle related forum". He has a squid clutching a bomb as a avatar and called Dr. SOS "Dr PointyHead" ...not sure why though.

In the Good Eats special where alton brown is trapped on a tropical island octopus makes a nominal appearance... he is going down the list of culinary mistakes paired with coconut... when he crosses off the coconut octopus, he goes back a crosses it off even more times.... they also show a quasi octoish coconut lump being pulled from the makeshift over... it was only a six legged lump of coconut....

Sign me up! I wonder what the copyright implications are for random signs on flickr. Probably "no one cares if you don't get caught," I guess...

CP is pretty serious about copyright infringement (I made a shirt with an illustrator drawing of the Burger King and it didn't survive a day!). This shirt would be a two-step process: someone would first have to recognize the design as familiar (easy) and then have to track down where the sign actually is (hard). They might try to take it off just based on the design's existence on Flickr without finding a copyright owner, but I think at that point I could talk my way out of it because its a streetsign (no one owns a copyright for "yield" do they?)
