main_board Dec 4th, 2005, 05:46pm 16 bids, $172 for a common species, Wow is right! Of course, it is being marketed as GIANT-SQUID-BEAK-VERY-RARE-MUST-SEE! Who could resist that...8-)
Neat find though, all and all!
Cheers!
Steve O'Shea Dec 4th, 2005, 06:04pm That's not Architeuthis!!!!!
Someone write online that it isn't, and say that I said so - they're being conned. (I'm not an ebay member, wouldn't know how to and don't want to be).
Phil Dec 4th, 2005, 06:05pm Crikey. I wonder what a real Architeuthis beak would go for?
Steve O'Shea Dec 4th, 2005, 06:07pm Oooops, just read, Humboldt; sorry
PSLee Dec 4th, 2005, 06:17pm Shouldn't the beak be displayed with the larger portion as the lower beak, while the smaller portion being the upper beak. The opposite of a parrot's beak.

Nope! The longer portion is the upper beak and the short robust one is the lower.
And Steve, I thought the same as you, they've very conveniently hidden the Humbolt part well, and made the GIANT part stand out. I wonder how many of the bidders made the same mistake and think they're getting an Archie beak????????????

monty Dec 5th, 2005, 01:06pm the only squid beak I have is the one I removed from my "squid with spicy salt" in a Chinese restaurant. I wonder how much I could get for that on ebay...
cuttlegirl Dec 7th, 2005, 11:27pm OMG, it went for $610.01!
Paradox Dec 8th, 2005, 12:30am *faints*
Infusoria Dec 8th, 2005, 04:04am I have 2 sucker rings from the 300Kg Archi we had in J-block last year, I wonder what I'd get since it's authentic? (Expelled from AUT probably)...
Euprymna Dec 8th, 2005, 06:19am 610.01 $
Wow, with that money he could have taken a trip to Chile and buy more than one complete D.gigas from a local fisherman! He would have had a fresh beak and a nice meal!
I've got a vampyroteuthis beak...I may put on ebay and get rich!
eups
cthulhu77 Dec 8th, 2005, 06:53am Just think how much a squid beak shaped like Elvis would go for !
Infusoria Dec 8th, 2005, 02:40pm Or Mother Teresa

Yog-Sothoth Dec 9th, 2005, 02:49am I nearly bid on that myself, then when I saw that it was'nt a true giant squid beck. I thought it time to educate myself better about their anatomy. What a wonderful siter this is. Hello everyone.
monty Dec 9th, 2005, 03:15am :welcome: Yog-Sothoth. We can always use more elder gods around here. :cthulhu:

Jean Jan 14th, 2006, 08:35pm Hmmmmmm I didn't think Sepioteuthis lessoniana was all that rare!

bigGdelta Jan 15th, 2006, 12:43am Missed this thread earlier.
At $610 a pop, who's up for a road trip to Mexico?
cuttlegirl Jan 19th, 2006, 10:42am Sepioteuthis lessoniana beak is up to $4.45. Don't think that this guy is going to be able to earn a living selling squid beaks... He should have listed it as a "giant" squid beak - its all about the marketing...:sly:
Andy Lister Jan 19th, 2006, 07:21pm You do have to worry about the conservation and ethics issues on this. We are all civilised ceph loving people and are talking (albeit mostly joking) about going fishing in mexico... what about all the other nutters who just want money... im sure this is how elephant hunting for ivory started... well not on Ebay but you get the idea!

Indeed. Well said Andy.
Case in hand...have a look at this (http://www.profitbooks.com/books/gallery.html). If I am reading this right, this fisherman is selling an Architeuthis(?) beak for $50,000. No matter how rare they are, this can't be right.
It makes one wonder, how do biological artifacts get valued? Who decides a common conch shell is worth $5? Supply and demand, I suppose.

Its all supply and demand. Sotheby's had a big vert fossil auction about a year and a half ago and they were bidding things down. McDonalds and Disney paid about 8 million for the Field Museum to get Sue, I suspect today it wouldn't go for anything near that.

Hey I was just going to go to the fish market, plenty of dosidicus there and the beaks just get thrown away.
