16 bids, $172 for a common species, Wow is right! Of course, it is being marketed as GIANT-SQUID-BEAK-VERY-RARE-MUST-SEE! Who could resist that...8-)

Neat find though, all and all!
Cheers!

That's not Architeuthis!!!!!

Someone write online that it isn't, and say that I said so - they're being conned. (I'm not an ebay member, wouldn't know how to and don't want to be).

Crikey. I wonder what a real Architeuthis beak would go for?

Shouldn't the beak be displayed with the larger portion as the lower beak, while the smaller portion being the upper beak. The opposite of a parrot's beak.

Nope! The longer portion is the upper beak and the short robust one is the lower.

And Steve, I thought the same as you, they've very conveniently hidden the Humbolt part well, and made the GIANT part stand out. I wonder how many of the bidders made the same mistake and think they're getting an Archie beak????????????

the only squid beak I have is the one I removed from my "squid with spicy salt" in a Chinese restaurant. I wonder how much I could get for that on ebay...

I have 2 sucker rings from the 300Kg Archi we had in J-block last year, I wonder what I'd get since it's authentic? (Expelled from AUT probably)...

610.01 $

Wow, with that money he could have taken a trip to Chile and buy more than one complete D.gigas from a local fisherman! He would have had a fresh beak and a nice meal!
I've got a vampyroteuthis beak...I may put on ebay and get rich!

At $610 a pop, who's up for a road trip to Mexico?

Sepioteuthis lessoniana beak is up to $4.45. Don't think that this guy is going to be able to earn a living selling squid beaks... He should have listed it as a "giant" squid beak - its all about the marketing...:sly:

You do have to worry about the conservation and ethics issues on this. We are all civilised ceph loving people and are talking (albeit mostly joking) about going fishing in mexico... what about all the other nutters who just want money... im sure this is how elephant hunting for ivory started... well not on Ebay but you get the idea!

Indeed. Well said Andy.

Case in hand...have a look at this (http://www.profitbooks.com/books/gallery.html). If I am reading this right, this fisherman is selling an Architeuthis(?) beak for $50,000. No matter how rare they are, this can't be right.

It makes one wonder, how do biological artifacts get valued? Who decides a common conch shell is worth $5? Supply and demand, I suppose.

Its all supply and demand. Sotheby's had a big vert fossil auction about a year and a half ago and they were bidding things down. McDonalds and Disney paid about 8 million for the Field Museum to get Sue, I suspect today it wouldn't go for anything near that.

Hey I was just going to go to the fish market, plenty of dosidicus there and the beaks just get thrown away.
