He's got really long arms which I like and yea, he's really cute. I like the webbing. Is it also a Bimaculoides? And how old is he? tjohnson Oct 23rd, 2005, 05:43pm Dont know what that is but its not a Bimac Detritus Oct 23rd, 2005, 06:06pm Not sure of its identity. I think it is an O. cyanea based on location of origin (indo-pacific), base coloration, activity during the day etc. I don't know how old it is. If it is cyanea, then it will get a fair bit larger in the next several months as I believe they can get up to 500 - 600 g. Anyway, its an amazing animal full of personality and pretty much always visible. An example of personality is when I tried to feed him fresh clam flesh. I placed the food next to his tentacles and he withdrew his arm very quickly. I then placed the food under his mantle near his mouth and he grabbed it with his beak. I thought, "great he going to eat the clam". He then opened his mantle so that his mouth was towards me above the water and spit the food back at me. The clam flesh shot a few inches out of the water in the direction of my face and landed in a far corner of the tank. Mimius then sat back with a very satifsfied look on his face until I gave him some shrimp! Jean Oct 23rd, 2005, 06:35pm I thought, "great he going to eat the clam". I had a pet Rat that did the same.....fed her some carrot, thinking that it would be a good chew to help keep her teeth down................wrong.......next time I opened the cage the carrot fired out went over my shoulder and hit the wall.....conclusion Buttons didn't like carrots...she did however like Macadamia Nuts! J sorseress Oct 23rd, 2005, 06:35pm He definitely has a mind of his own! Detritus Oct 23rd, 2005, 06:49pm Yes, eight arms and an attitude - a dangerous combination. corw314 Oct 23rd, 2005, 07:51pm He's got really long legs. Very cute! dbbga Oct 24th, 2005, 05:22pm Better watch him closely.....He might grab you and take you down for a swim :) erich orser Oct 24th, 2005, 09:35pm A rather active, diurnal octopus with incredible reach and great coloration. Really beautiful ceph. Phil Oct 24th, 2005, 09:37pm Yep, he certainly is cute. I'll have four please. Detritus Oct 25th, 2005, 07:18am Mimius is grateful for the compliments. Ever see an Octopus blush? bobwonderbuns Oct 25th, 2005, 08:38am absolutely!! joefish84 Oct 25th, 2005, 03:46pm i see an ornery bastard not an octo teach him a lesson!!!! feed him only clams!!!! Armstrong Oct 25th, 2005, 04:18pm Lol...I want his octopus. He's one of the coolest looking iv seen so far. Longer tentacles is a must have. I know I like them. I also like the color of it in the pictures. Detritus Oct 26th, 2005, 07:02am Yes, I must say I lucked out. Especially since the availability here is hit or miss when it comes to cephalopods. I've had him about six weeks so far and he is getting larger every day. Great thing is he is out most of the time. Last night my son and I were looking for him as it was feeding time. We looked for about 15 minutes and started to get scared that he escaped. I then took the feeding tongs and placed them into the water and tapped them gently against the rocks. He waved his tentacles and changed his color and there he was, right in front of us, a few inches from the tongs. His crypsis is very effective. Hence the name (Mimius - mimicry). I hope he is only a juvenille as I am growing very attached to the suckered little guy. Will post tonight pics of his new home, still be constructed. Yes, I fed him clams again to show my wife his personality. He did basically the same thing, though his aim is improving. The clam hit the floor this time and the dog ate it. My pets apparently eat better than we do. bmatson Oct 26th, 2005, 03:19pm  my dog does the same thing, one time she ate the the frozen shrimp i was thawing for my octopus. Detritus Oct 26th, 2005, 06:13pm LOL, good thing we don't use shrimp cocktail sauce too or else my wife would be fighting the octopus for the shrimp! |
