Wow, the forum seems to have been updated without major disaster! That's astounding!

I'll be doing some configurations along the way, but please post any problems or questions here. Thanks-

Tony

You'll notice some nice little enhancements here and there with this new upgrade -- nothing too significant, but it does set the stage for more enhancements going forward (i.e., the resurrection of the Tank Owner Database).

One of the most noticeable changes right now may be the fact that we now base unread messages on messages that you actually clicked on and read, as opposed to it being cookie-based. This is a bit more server-intensive, but I think we can handle it. After 10 days, if you haven't read a note the assumption will be that you don't want to read it, and it will fall into the read bucket.

I just put :boohoo: in another post... it seems to work ok for me.

it does seem to think a lot of threads I've read "have unread posts" however. Otherwise, it looks great!

:nautiloi:

Appreciate any help troubleshooting here. If you click on "Go Advanced" or the "Post Reply" button when viewing a thread, you should navigate to the post creation page. You should see a drop-down menu which offers all smilies in a list. (it's between the A and paperclip icons on the top row of editing tools).

If you don't see that, or you can't click it -- let me know -- what's happening? You click and there's no response? What browser are you using? (IE or FireFox)?

Thanks-

In firefox on linux, I see the pull-down menu, and I can both insert via that and also just type :cthulhu: (colon-cthulhu-colon) and both seem to work...:twocents:

Slow? Really? Hmm...

Ooh, spell check, I didn't notice that.

Wow, I just purposefully spelled "notice" as "notic", and tried it -- it requires a download, but once installed it's pretty snazzy.

how do you check for missspelllings? I didn't notice anything different in "preview post"-- do I have to submit this to catch my above error?

(edit: no, it let missspelllings go through...)

I noticed there is now a "disable smilies in text" checkbox below the edit window; maybe it's accidentally activated for the smiley-impaired?

You may be onto something with that, but not sure how that'd be pre-selected... In any event... hoping it works now!

If not, for anyone experiencing this let me know and I'll research further. I am not able to recreate.

In my screenshot above, the spellcheck is right above the winking smiley -- it's the icon with the ABC and the checkmark under it.

When you click it, you should get a pop-up. I think there's an issue with javascript. Let me investigate a bit.

The spell-check and smiley issue may in fact be a browser caching issue. Try using Ctrl-F5 (hold down the Control key while hitting the F5 key) while you're on an edit post page. It... just... might... work.

um...
Sep 26th, 2005, 08:57pm
The spell-check is not available in Firefox. I think it's a purely IE frill.

This is a quick edit. That is so cool!

Yeah, the quick edits are impressive! It's using a technology called AJAX, where you can send/receive data on a page without reloading it. Lots of enhancements for Moderator tools in this regard.

Hmm... I can make the smileys work by typing in the text for them, e.g. colon-twisted-colon for  (the most important one ), but not by clicking on the icons to the right of the compose-message box. Wait, Ctrl-F5 worked, now the smileys are normal... is this a one-time-fixes-all trick or do I need to do it every time I reply to something?

It's a one-time fix -- you had the "old" TONMO.com code cached on your computer -- Ctrl-F5 pulled down the latest -- the old is gone forevermore. 8-)

What is a 'Slurp Spider' (check the Active Users bit)? I've never seen them before. Were they exposed at low tide after Hurricane Rita? Will there be a Discovery documentary on 'Slurp Spiders: Killers of the deep'?

Hello Tony,

Cheers,
Clem
Important distinction:

Yahoo! Slurp Spider is our friend, along with the Google Spider. They crawl our site and help bring like-minded ceph fans together on TONMO.com, but displaying pertinent search results on the respective search engines.

The Wolf Spiders in my basement are NOT our friends. Undetermined whether they are afraid of fire, but if they have any sense of self-awareness they are afraid of my shoe.

Diablo's a ratter and if it moves it's prey and prey is to be EATEN! Which is unfortunate when the prey in question is your toes!

Seamus on the other hand is a Cocker Spaniel and prefers dinner served up on a silver tray! And spiders? ewwwwwwwww:yuck:

Hmm... I haven't observed the latter part of your question myself. The idea is supposed to be that it retains posts not read within the past 10 days under that heading, and it would remain there until a) you have read it or b) 10 days passed. That list should only be populated when notes above that heading (new unread posts) were dismissed on your last visit. I'll keep an eye on it...

 As ever, within reason some off-topic replies to threads are OK -- we can go off on tangents from time to time. What's not OK are seed threads (outside of Supporter's Forum) that have nothing to do with cephs. There are some exceptions to this, too, under The Octopus' Den (for community notes and significant current events in the news).

Has this gotten any better? Honestly I haven't much figured this out yet. I think, after a while, the unread posts go away even though I haven't read them within the past 10 days (I think).

I'm curious what others think? If you've noticed the difference, is it better or worse than before? I can change the setting so that the last-read logic is less "smart", i.e., it can go back to simply telling you what's new since you last logged in... and if you didn't read posts the last time you were here, tough luck, they're gone now. What's your preference?

um...

The tank owners database is something I've really missed. I used to look up information on each person before replying on Ceph Care so that I'd know what size tank and other information. This helped in replying because I can't always remember who has what.

So happy to hear this, Tony!

Cool. Note this is testing the limits of my technical ability, but I intend to bring it back up. Also note that there's about a 95% chance that the database will start from scratch (I won't be able to resurrect the old data).
