View Full Version : The official 'dodgy fossil for sale' thread
Phil Aug 20th, 2005, 08:25pm Apologies for the lack of fossil cephalopod news everyone. This isn't due to lack of trying to find it, there just doesn't seem to be much happening out there at the moment. As soon as something happens we'll be there.
In the meantime, it might be fun if we posted images or links to.....er....'dodgy' fossils for sale.
How about these ever so convincing dragonflies for example:
Right-oh (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Old-Rare-Jurassic-Period-Dragonfly-Fossil_W0QQitemZ6554474712QQcategoryZ159 15QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) and Yep, I'm convinced this is genuine too (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/rare-china-liaoxi-dragonfly-fossil_W0QQitemZ6554136663QQcategoryZ159 15QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
WhiteKiboko Aug 20th, 2005, 09:45pm well naturally theyre legit, because theres never been any dishonesty about fossils coming out of china......
to the untrained eye (me) at least the second one doesnt look like a grade school art project....
pipsquek Aug 20th, 2005, 11:00pm Do people really fall for that crap????
Whoa.
erich orser Aug 20th, 2005, 11:03pm But it's so convincing! Gee, and here I was going to order one, too...
sorseress Aug 20th, 2005, 11:23pm Well, they're really pretty....that might be a good enough reason. What are they made of, polymer clay?
Colin Aug 21st, 2005, 04:15am 2nd one looks like they had never actually seen a real dragonfly before LOL
Phil Dec 30th, 2005, 08:59pm One must be '' havin' a larf"? What, what?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/old-Chinese-infrequent-dragonfly-fossil_W0QQitemZ6592914492QQcategoryZ159 15QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
bigGdelta Dec 30th, 2005, 10:51pm hey Phil what would a real one cost?
Clem Dec 30th, 2005, 11:03pm Phil,
Wasn't "Infrequent Dragonfly" the sequel to "The Constant Gardener?"
Sorry,
Clem
bigGdelta Dec 30th, 2005, 11:09pm infrequent dragonfly is the last Kevin Costner movie.
Phil Dec 31st, 2005, 06:24am hey Phil what would a real one cost?
Not exactly sure there, bigGdelta, but I would have thought at least $1000 dollars, and maybe a lot more.
Buy two, get one free!
ob Dec 31st, 2005, 10:19am Would these fossils have been crafted by the infamous D, as in: "ID", by any chance?
For further words of caution, they're not all that easily exposed: http://www.paleodirect.com/fakechinesefossils1.htm
Phil Dec 31st, 2005, 01:04pm Thanks very much for that link, Ob. I've often wondered how exactly those endless fake e-Bay Keichousaurs were made. And now I know.
It's easy to say that 'there's one born every minute', but some of those fakes are really convincing.
Oh bum, now I'm going to have to have a good look through my trilobite collection as that site has made me feel quite paranoid about some of my specimens.
Well, actually I might wait until 2006 to do that.
cuttlegirl Jun 2nd, 2006, 11:24pm Ok, I have never even heard of a four-horned dinosaur...
http://cgi.ebay.com/Authentic-and-rare-four-horn-Dinosaurs-SKull-Fossil_W0QQitemZ6634211932QQihZ012QQcate goryZ15915QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
But it kind of looks like a four-horned antelope to me...
Definitely mammalian, strong bovine impression (see attached) with horns stuck on and a bit of mud for good measure. You have to love the muddy dog skulls by this fellar: "rare large dinosaur skull"... whahaha!!!
PS: Added chousingha skull for comparison, I don't think they grow horns to the size of the so called four horned dino as pictured in the previous post...
cuttlegirl Jun 3rd, 2006, 08:53am And of course his dinosaur fossil looks NOTHING like this one...
http://cgi.ebay.com/large-four-horn-Beast-head-Fossil_W0QQitemZ6629931654QQcategoryZ159 15QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
You do get a better deal on the "dinosaur" fossil, only $800. This one is $1,860!!! Gotta start digging in my backyard, must be something valuable there...
Must call the AMNH!!!! This is amazing!!!!!!!!
This does crack me up, however...
"I am an honest fossil collector ,collecting fossils from the local countrysides of GanSu,LiaoNing,HeNan,GuiZhou within China.I love all kinds of fossils, but I am not an expert, may unable to answer some professional questions. Thanks for understanding. Please note that your email always is appreciated,a satisfied experience is the most important thing for both of us!
FAIRLY TRANSACTION, NO CHEAT PLEASE BID NOW!!!"

Who says you need a pelvis in the Triassic? That's like soooooo Permian
It gets better still (http://cgi.ebay.com/Dinosaur-Fossil-Resin-Rock-replica-Fossil-NEW_W0QQitemZ6284007522QQcategoryZ415QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
spartacus Jun 3rd, 2006, 01:58pm I'm gonna start digging up pets & make some cash ! 8-) KERCHING !
Keef
Phil Jun 3rd, 2006, 10:01pm Good lord, whatever next, a basilisk in an egg, a freeze dried Mongolian Death Worm or a Fijian mermaid?. I believe I've seen the same Chinese dealer before on a couple of internet sites and he's been deleted from at least two for allegedly selling rubbish. He never answers queries on how he has obtained permits to export from China when questioned. Funny that.
(Of course this may be a different dealer selling very similar items, not to cast untoward aspersions, if you catch my drift).
Phil Jun 3rd, 2006, 10:03pm It gets better still (http://cgi.ebay.com/Dinosaur-Fossil-Resin-Rock-replica-Fossil-NEW_W0QQitemZ6284007522QQcategoryZ415QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
You know, that's so hopeless, I'm almost tempted to buy it.
cuttlegirl Jun 3rd, 2006, 11:06pm Look, only $250,000 for this "first of its kind ever found" dinosaur embryo.
Why wasn't this in the news???
http://cgi.ebay.com/Very-Rare-Fossillized-Embryo-of-a-Dinosaur_W0QQitemZ6547318412QQihZ012QQca tegoryZ15915QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem
Wow!!!! That is way cool, must start saving up!!!!
In the mean while, let's add dodgy commentaries (http://cgi.ebay.com/Fossil-Large-Marine-DINOSAUR-Cast_W0QQitemZ6634173151QQihZ012QQcatego ryZ15915QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZVie wItem) to the equation....
No intention of rekindling any recently closed off threads there, gentlepeople :heee:
Sorry for the double post, but it sucks donk..., sorry, it is rather unsatisfying, to be stuck down here in gelatopia: How did this fossil (http://cgi.ebay.com/GIGANTIC-13-TOOTH-DINOSAUR-AGE-JAW-Fossil-Mosasaur-NR_W0QQitemZ6633500317QQcategoryZ15915QQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) come to be, I wonder?
cuttlegirl Jun 4th, 2006, 01:48pm  I was wondering that myself, since it seems to have migrated from its original destination...from the website.
This skeleton is one of the mosasaurs called Plioplatecarpus that inhabited the Pierre Sea about 75 million years ago. It was discovered in 1995 by Mike Hanson and Dennis Halvorson on Orville and Beverly Tranby's farm in the Sheyenne River Valley near Cooperstown, in Griggs County, ND.
This particular Cretaceous Moroccan Mosasaur marine fossil's teeth and triple Jaw bones are imbedded in a light brown matrix of phosphoric limestone from the Sahara Desert in the Oulad Abdoun Basin near the Khouribga phosphate plateau region of Morocco, North Africa.
ob Jun 15th, 2006, 07:38am And another one: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/5082264.stm
It strikes me that they are considering this a living fossil because of the existence of fossil material collected from China,..., could it possibly be it's the other way around?
cuttlegirl Jun 16th, 2006, 09:48pm Ok, what is (was) it?
http://cgi.ebay.com/triassica-JEHOLOSAURUS-skeleton-RAREST-dinosaur-fossil_W0QQitemZ6637719404QQihZ012QQcate goryZ15915QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Cephkid Jul 19th, 2006, 11:47am I've got a question: could an Ammonite and Orthoceras fossil we within 2 inches of each other?
Architeuthoceras Jul 19th, 2006, 02:13pm Technically no.
:ammonite: +:nautiloi: =:nofeet:
However an ammonoid could be next to a orthoconic nautiloid.
:goniatite +:nautiloi: =:feet:
ob Jul 19th, 2006, 04:29pm Ok, what is (was) it?
http://cgi.ebay.com/triassica-JEHOLOSAURUS-skeleton-RAREST-dinosaur-fossil_W0QQitemZ6637719404QQihZ012QQcate goryZ15915QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
A rabbit?
ob Jul 19th, 2006, 04:32pm I've got a question: could an Ammonite and Orthoceras fossil we within 2 inches of each other?
The answer could be yes, provided a lot of erosion or lack of sedimentation took place in the intervening time between both fossilisations, or they're placed next to each other in a collection
Architeuthoceras Jul 19th, 2006, 06:00pm Then again it depends on the definition of we. If it was a typo and was meant to be be, or if it was a typo and was meant to be wee, the answer could come out totaly different.
This plate shows goniatite ammonoids (ammonites on some ebay pages) next to orthoconic nautiloids (? are they really Orthoceras? There is a great debate as to the validity of the name Orthoceras, some refer it to Michelinoceras and the Orthoceratida to Michelinoceratida)
http://www.paleodirect.com/amx-015.htm
Both of Ob's ideas would be very easy to reconstruct, although that first one is out there a ways, it could and probably does happen.
cuttlegirl Aug 7th, 2006, 07:21pm Look, they walked upright  http://cgi.ebay.com/DINOSAUR-FOSSIL-ONLY-0-99GBP_W0QQitemZ160016817301QQihZ006QQcat egoryZ15915QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Phil Aug 7th, 2006, 08:40pm It's a real fossil I tell you. Don't be a Doubting Thomas!
It looks like a Boxer dog crossed with Alien. I'm almost tempted to buy that to give to someone I don't like for a Christmas present.
sorseress Aug 7th, 2006, 08:57pm Those things are too hilarious! D'ya think there's anyone who actually believes?
Architeuthoceras Aug 7th, 2006, 11:00pm Sure wish I had $2.00
cuttlegirl Nov 6th, 2007, 03:46pm I'm resurrecting this thread because I found a dinosaur brain fossil for sale...
