tonmo Aug 8th, 2005, 10:30pm Yes, our world traveler showed. Amid all the chaos, he ended up coming home with me! (I've already had him). :hmm: Not the desired result -- it was the perfect opportunity to hand him off! Now I have to ship him.
Where does he go next, any volunteers?
Squidman Aug 8th, 2005, 10:59pm Hah! And not a single one with me in it!
tonmo Aug 8th, 2005, 11:05pm Ahhh! Stay tuned! I have you somewhere...
tonmo Aug 8th, 2005, 11:09pm Oh! And there was this during the Cthulhu presentation... well done, Erich:

tonmo Aug 9th, 2005, 01:01pm Another person I think we're missing is Shepmoon -- anyone get a pic of him? BTW, Shepmoon (if you're reading this thread), how was whale-watching on Sunday?
Cephkid Aug 9th, 2005, 09:58pm Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch! You caught me looking at my camera during one of the speakers...uh, uuuummm...........speaking? Speaking! Anyway, I would show my picture of you doing something similarly irksome in retaliation, but with the few pics I have, I am more likely to pass the test of valor and cut down yon tree with a herring. Curses!
tonmo Aug 9th, 2005, 10:06pm Hmm... what kind of "irksome" pic do you have of me, might I ask? :goofysca:
Note that the footage was taken by Squidman's dad (I think it was his dad) before anything got started... there were no speakers speaking at the time!
Squidman Aug 10th, 2005, 07:55am Note that the footage was taken by Squidman's dad (I think it was his dad)
T'was he.
Shepmoon Aug 10th, 2005, 10:47am Another person I think we're missing is Shepmoon -- anyone get a pic of him? BTW, Shepmoon (if you're reading this thread), how was whale-watching on Sunday?
Ohhh I forgot to mention...I don't show up on film or in mirrors. Sorry!
Nice to meet you all. I'm sorry I didn't make it back for the afternoon talks and festivities. I went to the Aquarium and got totally worn out between some ongoing health problems and the absolute insanity (a Saturday afternoon, after all) at the Aquarium.
Whale-watching was awesome! We saw several humpbacks, one of which did a considerable head-slapping performance, plus a couple pairs of blues (somewhat rare, we were told), plus a lovely assortment of dolphins playing with the boat. Very cool! Alas, no giant tentacles suddenly dwarfing the boat.
Add my thanks to all the organizers. Very cool con!
Shep
Gaetan P. Aug 10th, 2005, 04:17pm I hope everyone enjoyed the "Ban Bottom Trawling" Stickers. Sorry I wasn't there. LOoked like a hoot.

NEE!
Must you be so proud that I have none?! Dappy eenglish, your mother was a hampster, and your father smelt of elder-berries! (I watched Monty Python & the Quest for the Holy Grail recently. ) Now be quiet or I shall taunt you a second time.
Melissa Aug 15th, 2005, 09:55am Here are a few more pictures from Monterey
cthulhu77 Aug 15th, 2005, 10:18am Love the one of the two dark overlords...
CapnNemo Aug 15th, 2005, 11:03am Here are a few more pictures from Monterey
His that a 'Hi My Name's Cthulhu' name badge that the Great Old One is wearing?
Melissa Aug 15th, 2005, 02:14pm Cthulu didn't have the cash to register, but we couldn't say no when he asked for a nametag.
Melissa Aug 16th, 2005, 04:51pm Here are some photos from the MBARI tour.
This is the pool where things are tested before they go out.
Melissa Aug 16th, 2005, 04:56pm And the yellow underwater unmanned machines they build and send out.
The Navy man working on these described the levels of pressure they are built to withstand and what kind of filling is used to enable this.
Each has something along the lines of "this is not a weapon - please contact MBARI" with phone numbers and email addresses and urls to facilitate return. Last year, one was retrieved from Norway...
Melissa Aug 16th, 2005, 05:00pm Solar panels provide the energy used by some of the underwater equipment (not Ventana or Tiburon - they need too much).
Melissa Aug 16th, 2005, 05:09pm Outside, the first group got a look at the Zephyr, an MBARI vessel. The later group left the hallowed halls just as the Ventana arrived at the dock upon a different boat.
The "arms" in the photo of Ventana hold large canisters and their "lids" for top and bottom. The jars they return with are essentially acrylic tubes with caps that are removed from top and bottom until the desired sample is within. Then the "arms" slide the top and bottom over the openings to secure whatever specimen.
Melissa Aug 16th, 2005, 05:13pm We had a closer look on board. Lights are necessary to see anything at the depth Ventana reaches, 1500 meters. The camera is adjustable, but as the people on board see everything on screen and without depth (not to mention while the object of interest is moving), focusing is difficult.
Colin Aug 16th, 2005, 07:14pm Nobody got some decent pics for a caption competition or a 101 uses for Cthulu????
Paradox Sep 5th, 2005, 03:50pm Hey there! Is that cthulhu outfit normally residing in LA at Novas pizza/cafe??
I see it there when I visit and was told it was a handmade costume, so I figured it had to be the same one...
sorseress Sep 5th, 2005, 09:45pm Yes, that's the one. Ask Erich about it.
